Looks like Dion picked a bad day to stake his leadership on party discipline;
A Senate committee says controversial provisions in the anti-terror law should be extended for three years, but it has also suggested more safeguards for civil liberties be built into the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The special Senate committee says the two elements of the act dealing with preventive arrests and investigative hearings have a place in dealing with terrorism and should be renewed.
A reader emails;
Martha Hall Findlay, the Liberal who was forced to step aside in Newmarket-Aurora to permit the floor crossing of [Belinda Stronach] … was queried on the Michael Coren Show tonight as to which riding she was going to run in. We received an equivocating answer but also perhaps revealing. She stated, in effect, that she was defering the choice of riding to someone who had not yet declared their intentions to seek renomination.

Looks like the SCC has ruled that Security Certificates are unconstitutional. (see ctv.ca)
The UCC gave the gov’t one year to come up with a different plan. I suppose they could use the “not-withstanding clause”…
I meant SCC… I don’t spell well in acronyms…

re:the “hide Pearson”story in G&M-Maria Minna had to bring this up in QP today! Talk about conspiracy theories!
Sammy,
You are right on the conspiracy angle. I titled my blog post “Galloway wears tinfoil hat” I’m looking forward to her article next week “Harper refuses to reveal Caramilk secret”
Hmmmm-could Martha be waiting for Belinda to come up with a family health or other plausible emergency (excuse) to have to step down in Newmarket/Aurora?
Seems Belinda is already active in her new venture with Bill Clinton handing out malaria nets and being on stage with the other rich and famous who get adulation and ego-stroking accolades for such “selfless goals”.
Many complaints by Belinda’s constitutents that she is not on the job. Too busy in Washington confabbing with the hoi paloi and Hillary’s boy toy.
Martha would be the obvious candidate to take her place since Martha was asked to step aside for Belinda in the first place.
Yes, SCC ruled security certificates unconstitutional, but, government has one year grace to make new law that passes muster. Noticed on blogging dippers that this decision somehow means concerns over terrorist law expiry is bogus. Talk about linking two separate ideas – certificates used to deport terrorists and hearing used to detain imminent terrorist attack threats. No wonder NDP has never formed federal government. Also noticed nobody blogs on dipper site. IMHO, it is unfortunate that the SCC takes the position that anyone who sets foot on Canadian soil, even on fraudulent declaration, has the same/similar constitutional right of those who live, work and pay taxes in Canada.
“The special Senate committee says the two elements of the act dealing with preventive arrests and investigative hearings have a place in dealing with terrorism and should be renewed.”
“Preventative arrests”?? “Investigative hearings”??
Hmmmmmmmmm no excuse to suspend habias corpus or suspend burden of proof or establishment of mens rea.
Nope, seems all the right “special elements” of the law are in place there to make a “terrorist” out of anyone who hasn’t complimentary things to say about the government.
I just love these asinine Liberal compromises…while tey focus attention on the peripheral dangers to civil liberty in this law they purposely gloss over the real danger in the law…that being the nebulous definition of what constitutites a “terrorist” or “terrorism”…under the current definitions the authorities can fill in the blamks by arresting anyone they or the government don’t like and the courts don’t get a crack at making a definitive definition for “terrorist” because the accused ( or more properly the un accuse prisoner) has no recourse in the courts until he is charged….if the is held under “preventaive arrest” and in “investigative hearing” he can be held for months and sweated and abused and intimidated into being quite upon his release…because he was not charged he has no recourse for damages because authorities are immune to prosecution when conduting a terrorism investigation.
There a lot more to this act than Canadians realize when it dove tails with 3 other previous Liberal acts exempting police from criminal charges when on “special investigations”.
DIJON is a fool and probably is ideologically motivated rather thay motivated by any respect for civil rights…but I do hope he trashes this terrorist law…at least get it rewritten to make authorities accountable for damage caused by careless mistakes.
I think it was linked by National Newswatch yesterday, but the following article on David Suzuki’s cross-country tour was somewhat amusing:

But, to top this off, I actually saw Suzuki and his small crew roll into Calgary yesterday evening in his behemoth pollution-spewing “rock-star tour bus”. The great irony was this lowly neo-con climate-holocaust denier was standing out in the cold waiting for my bus (unfortunately, of the public-transit variety).
You can see a pic of the bus here (note, it looks huge compared to a standard city bus): http://www.davidsuzuki.org/tour/find.asp

Good idea tanking CIDA ( Moe Strong’s payola fund for his pet 3rd world partners)and taking some of the $40 million that Canadian “overpaid” for Tsunami relief, and giving the military direct control of distributing it on projects that benefit the most people in distressed conditions.
I have always maintained the CIDA fund was too large a temptation to enrich too may other people along the “charity distribution chain”. Get the cash directly to those who need it cutting out the nepotistic “middle men”.
Besides I know Moe will pop a hemeroid seing his pet slush fund being tanked….if it makes Moe weep It’s good for the rest of us.
B Hoax Aware said: “Has anyone, anywhere, anytime — seen, heard, read of Maurice Strong being defended for his past/present worldly “actions” ??? After all he is still a Canadian, although in hiding, perhaps.”
The last I read on chairman Moe’s whereabouts and doings was in a western US Liberty telegram which had him living in Beijing full time, as a Chinese citizen with a Chinese passport and attached to the Chinese commerce ministry as an “investment advisors” AND running the Chinese KP carbon credit brokerage.
I recall that he had smaller (but plush) digs in Ottawa when his Protege’ Paul Martin had him in the PMO as a Kyoto implimentation guru….I recall media accounts of Moe “crying with joy” when his protege Martin was elected (crowned?) LPC leader and defacto PM…I also recall a small blub in the Hill Times that stated he folded up his Ottawa diggs and was on a plain to Beijing 4 days after the Martin election loss to Harper.
I wonder if this is because he knew Stock Day had his number and was agreeable to turn him over to US authorities who want him on several warrants to appear on federal investigative matters.
Moe has sold off a lot of his US assets and has had some siezed as I recall, so I doubt he’ll be back to the US anytime soon. He appears at UN love-ins in other nations but not in the US or Canada of late.
If you want “Chairman Moe” updates do a site search at Canada free press…Judi Macleod keeps tabs on Canada’s/Powercor’s/LPC’s favorite son.

Suicide bomber injures seven at hospital opening in Khost [U.S. soldier wrestles suicide bomber]
CENTCOM ^ | February 23, 2007
Seven U.S. Soldiers were wounded Tuesday, when a suicide bomber detonated himself during the opening ceremony of a new emergency section of the Khost City Hospital in the city of Khowst, Khost Province.
As the ceremony was about to begin, the bomber, dressed as a medical professional was stopped by Afghan National Police inside the compound. As he was being questioned he took off running towards the ceremony.
As ANP forces chased the suspect, Coalition forces verbally instructed him to stop. When he did not, they engaged with small arms fire, hitting the bomber several times. A U.S. Soldier wrestled him to the ground, restraining him long enough to allow the crowd of people to move safely away. He was able to break free from the bomber prior to the explosion. He sustained only minor injuries from the blast.
Two of the seven injured Soldiers have been medically evacuated to Forward Operating Base Salerno where they are listed in stable condition.
Army Cpl. Anthony Rush, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 321st Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, who witnessed the event, said “The people were running everywhere and it was difficult at first to figure out what was happening. It was a failed attempt by the enemy.”
Dr. Kamal, an Afghan physician at the ceremony, said he could not believe these things were happening. “These people are the enemy of Afghanistan. They do not want to see the progress of the people, and they will do everything they can to stop it. Thanks to the Coalition forces that… they shoot and stopped this man and saved the lives of Afghan people.” …-

Giant Weights to Be Dropped Into Indonesian Mud Volcano Friday, Officials Say
FOXNews.com ^ | 02/23/2007 | AP
SURABAYA, Indonesia — Indonesian authorities will drop hundreds of giant concrete balls into a fissure Friday to try to stem a gushing mud eruption that has inundated villages and factories, an official said. The hot, noxious mud — enough to fill 50 Olympic-sized swimming pools — has flowed from the hole each day for the last nine months, forcing at least 11,000 people from their homes. Four villages and 25 factories have been buried under a 30-foot layer of mud. The chained cement balls, weighing up to 550 pounds each, will be dropped from a scaffolding into the so-called mud…-

I’ll say that Canada was once a prosperous country before industry was told to shut down and all of out tax money was sent to foreign countries to buy carbon credits!
And now that countries like China and Russia hold all the wealth, they do not help countries with foreign aid like Canada and mostly the United States did.
Kim Bolan, Vancouver Sun reporter, responds to one blogger re: suggestions that the RCMP ‘leaked’ names on the witness list for the Air India Inquiry:
pacificgazette.blogspot.com/
“We’ve got to hand it to Kim Bolan.
After we speculated about the possibility that Ms. Bolan may have been the recipient of a ‘leak’ which led to her story about the fact that Darshan Singh Saini is Liberal MP Navdeep Bains father-in-law, she, apparently*, left us the following message on the comment thread:
I wrote the story and there was no leak. It was very apparent from sitting through 19 months of the Air India trial who would be the obvious choices for investigative hearings – all the names came out during the evidence at the trial. After the trial, I wrote my book on Air India, called “Loss of Faith: How the Air India Bombers Got Away With Murder” and reviewed documents related to the one Supreme Court challenge of the investigative hearing provision, launched and lost by Satnam Reyat – the wife of the only man convicted.
I have covered this story since 1985 so there are few mysteries or secrets. I first interviewed Darshan SINgh Saini back in 1988. I have a copy of parts of his police statement that came out during the Air India trial. The reason I wrote the story this week is because I just learned (through Sikh community contacts, not POLICE) that Saini was the father-in-law of Bains. I did not know that until very recently. I called up Saini and Bains and they confirmed it. I thought it was relevant.
So don’t always look for a political conspiracy. In this case, there isn’t one.

Two and a half days back in Canader and I am already overdosed by Fluffy Duffy and the rest of the Lieberal cheerleading squad. Good Lord, no wonder people believe what they do. The spin is full to the left. The airtime they gave Dion to spout his confusing ramblings unchallenged was truly embarassing. And What is with the lack of respect? Every one of the Lieberal or NDP mouthpieces interviewed called the PM by just “Harper”. No Prime Minister Harper or even Mr Harper. These people are disgusting.
The local radio talk show host I heard was so far left he had a lifetime membership to the NDP. Anyone who didn’t agree with his (erronious assumptions) was replaced swiftly by a commercial or station identification. Somehow, Laws and policies put in by the previous government were now the CPC fault and items that are of provincial jurisdiction were shown as things the Federal government hadn’t addressed. Go figure, eh.
If the Lieberals somehow get back in government I might just move permanently or go to Alberta when it declares independance.

Suzuki blasts PM over global warming
By BILL KAUFMANN — Sun Media
Environmentalist David Suzuki savaged Prime Minister Harper over global warming in front of a gymnasium full of elementary school students and their parents on Friday.
Later, he furiously lashed out at Albertans, calling rapid development of the oilsands “insanity” and a “disaster.”
Suzuki, who was invited to speak at Altadore elementary school and accept $835 collected by the students for his foundation, asked the kids what Harper’s main priority was after being elected last year. …
Later, with reporters, Suzuki slammed the province’s refusal to rein in the development of the oilsands, which produces massive amounts of greenhouse gas.
“Albertans have always had the highest standard of living in the country, why do you need all this out-of-control expansion of the oilsands?” said an angry Suzuki.
“It’s insanity … it’s crazy.”
“It’s up to your mom and dads to ensure your futures and livelihoods are part of the agenda,” he said to about 185 students ranging from kindergarten to Grade 6.
Following his presentation, adults and students alike gave Suzuki a warm round of applause, prompting the geneticist to note it was coming from oil-rich Albertans. …-

Well at least Indian children will not be dying of fever anymore, as children in Australia are.
I’ve just seen Jack Granatstein, author of Whose War is It Anyway?, on TVO’s The Agenda, live. He gets 10 out of 10 for demolishing Canada’s overweaning arrogance and political correctness re its place in the world. He actually credited Stephen Harper for–rightly–telling Canadians the truth, not the popular myth, about why Canada was in Afghanistan. (Granatstein credited Harper with being the ONLY PM, since St. Laurent, to tell the truth here.)
However, re placing blame for the national Canadian fiasco of considering our country the world’s “peacekeepers” and multiculti nirvana, Granatstein was disingenuous, to say the least: for underfunding the military and treating them like “daycare workers” with lousy equipment, and for pandering to the dons of ethnic communities in return for votes, he placed the blame firmly on “the government”.
Hello, Mr. Granatstein? Has there, by any chance, been a change in government since the one that treated the military like dirt and brazenly and unconscionably sold votes?
Of course, Steve Paikin, allowed this error of omission to pass.

I was also taken aback by the story re covering the Pearson medal — the accusations coming from Keith Martin and back up by Holland were ludcrous to say the least. I previously had a certain amount of respect for Martin, but this move was just plain silly. Worst of all — the GLOBE seemed to think that this was front page news! Where is their judgement about what is in fact newsworthy and what is not — surely they don’t think that anyone could take this type of accusation seriously. “To her great credit Ms. Bolan, without divulging any sources, was good enough to answer my follow-up question directly.
In a nutshell, she said it was she who initiated the proceedings by asking an Ontario contact about the whereabouts of Mr. Saini as she does this to keep track of folks that have been involved in the Air India case, and the closely related cases of the shootings of a local newspaper publisher, Tara Singh Hayer, in 1988 and 1998 (Mr. Hayer very publicly stated that one of the accused in the original Air India trial had told him that he had been involved in the fatal bomb plot; the second shooting of Mr. Hayer was fatal).”
“….In her Email reply to me, Ms. Bolan then want on to state that it was only after she had made her initial enquiry that the source then mentioned that Mr. Saini was the father-in-law of Mr. Bains, which she didn’t already know at the time and which she found interesting (and, as she stated in the original comment, ‘relevant’, especially after Mr. Bains confirmed it).”

On another blogger’s comments, Bolan makes this pertinent point:

“At 23/2/07 10:15 PM, Kim Bolan said…
That’s the last time I try to clarify rumours and misinterpretations of a story I have written.
The sad reality is that everyone is missing the key point – is it right for an MP – however well-liked, regardless of political parites – to vote on legislation that MAY impact a close relative of his.
That is the only question that should be affecting the debate. No one wants to discuss it. No one seems troubled that Saini, a former spokesman for the Babbar Khalsa, was a an alternate delegate to the Liberal leadership convention.”

National Post | Editorial: Security certificates are here to stay
We were slightly baffled Fri- day morning, when the Supreme Court of Canada released its decision in Charkaoui vs. Canada. Headlines immediately flooded onto the Web declaring that the court had “struck down” or “reversed” the system whereby foreigners on Canadian soil can be detained on the issuance of security certificates by the federal Cabinet. It would be much more accurate to say that the court had reviewed every aspect of the system, found that most of it was justified by national security, and asked only for minimal changes designed to protect the rights of the arrestees. Barring stronger legal arguments against them, the certificates — along with the safeguards already built into the system by its legislative creators –are here to stay.
The defining feature of the certificate scheme is that it allows for non-citizens suspected of being a threat to national security to be deported, and to be detained in the meantime, on the basis of information that remains secret. The court upheld these central features of the system, reasserting strongly that “non-citizens do not have an unqualified right to enter or remain in Canada” and that they can be deported without special consideration for their Charter rights to life, liberty and security of the person….-

They’re killing each other again in Gaza, but al-Reuters Palestinian shill Nidal al-Mughrabi assures us it’s just a “domestic dispute:” Four Palestinians dead in Gaza clan clash.
GAZA (Reuters) – Four Palestinians were killed in clashes between rival clans in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, hospital officials said, in the most intense violence since a coalition deal was reached this month between Fatah and Hamas.
A Palestinian, who belonged to the Islamist Hamas movement, was shot and killed by gunmen from a rival clan as part of a family feud in the early hours of Saturday. Hamas said the man killed was a local commander of its armed wing.
The killing triggered a clash in which a member of the other clan and a female relative, both Fatah supporters, died.
A bystander was also killed in the fighting, which wounded 18 other people nearby. Both families said the fighting was a domestic dispute and not caused by political rivalries.
