CTV: Math Is Hard, Editing Is Easy.

On January 4, 2007 09:26 PM ET, reader Darryl mentioned this mathematically challenged CTV report in the comments…

This zinger from the CTV web site:
“The size of cabinet has increased from 27 to 32 positions, with a smaller percentage of women on the team.”
I tried to use my slide rule but couldn’t tell the difference. Went back to using a calculator to determine that the percentage change in women went from 6/27=22.22% to 7/32=21.88%. So rounding, that would be a change from 22% to 22%.
Clearly this is a big news story and should have dominated the day’s events.

He didn’t provide a link, so I went looking tonight. Sure enough, when running a search on Google News for the phrase, it scored a hit.

But, when I clicked on the link – lo and behold – the text had been altered and CTV page updated as of “Thu. Jan. 4 2007 10:46 PM ET”. Well, mistakes happen. One can’t really blame CTV news staff for noticing the math error and quietly correcting it.
So, deprived of mathematical evidence that the “percentage of women” in the Harper cabinet had dropped, did CTV news staff correct the sentence to indicate the percentage was unchanged? Did they simply drop the self-evident portion? Nope.
They went looking for a new negative to fit the narrative.

Call me a cynic, but I think the “critics” CTV news staff consulted in this case just happened to be the ones sitting at their keyboards.

    the difference between 22.22% and 21.88% is a reduction of 0.34%.
    and 0.34% is a 1.53% reduction of 22.22%.
    so you see, thats where the difference of ‘1’ comes in. the .53% part we’re not sure about….. must be rona’s ghost or sumptin.

It is pandemic, from the T-J(Telegraph Journal and the Moncton Times Transcript and the Fredericton Daily Gleaner and CHSJ am and FM) in Saint John owned by the left winger married-to-the-Liberals Jamie Irving, to the CanWest Aspers of the West with the Cretan in their family albums. The only thing we have to fear is that the Conservative movement will once again disembowel itself on this Conservative principles of “I have a right to speak. To hell with anyone in the party…” like that me me me me me Garth fella or survivalist in a mountain cabin Randy White. Conservatives are irascible and intractable … mean nasty little pinched mouth people. We gotta’ get past that dearth of perspicacity!!! The Conservative movement must have a centrist mentality and in Canada that is somewhere to the Left of the Democrats in the USA which, while we must be friendly to that land is in reality a nation of criminals at almost every level of their society.   6. More bad Math from CTV
    Last night I sent a comment to David Akin’s Political Blog at CTV. The story was the Liberal spin that with Khan gone he actually did the Liberals a favour by opening up a GTA seat for one of the loser candidates on Dion’s Dream Team. I pointed out that the Liberal riding President and some of its executive was totally supportive of Khan and his decision. I went on to say that with the help of these people, their organizational powers and resources, Khan may win re election as a Conservative. I then pointed out that the margin of Khan’s victory was 5792 not the 7000 quoted by Akin. Another example of bad math. Even rounding up to 6000 could be seen as acceptable, but 1200 different. My post lasted about 8 hrs. When I checked this morning to see if the number had been revised based on the incorrect voting number reported by Akin, I discovered my post had been deleted. I guess it’s easier to ignore the facts then to issue a retraction and admit mistakes. Here is part of the story just to indicate the slant of Akin’s reporting.
    Both Liberal and Conservative staffers I spoke to today, by the way, agree that Khan doesn’t have a hope winning the riding as a Conservative.
    Despite a very credible Conservative candidate in 2006, the Liberal Khan coasted to victory by 7,000 votes
    I can only conclude that when holes were blown in his last two paras, he removed the post.

  7. Regardless of political bent, the mainstream media in any country becomes the enemy within when it spins and alters the facts to manipulate opinion.
    It is also dangerous. Pravda comes to mind. Banana Republics also.
    The undeniable Left leaning media hordes in this Country cannot get used to wearing out their gumshoes to get their information. They also can’t get over not having “inside” information and the fact there are no leakers in the Conservative fold to provide the easy scoop.
    They are all having trouble getting weaned after years of palsy relations with the Libranos.
    No surprise their math is skewed, it all figures.

  9. Another good example of the ‘Harper hates women’ theme that the Liberals and their apologists are flogging, is the Diane Ablonczy thing. Susan Delacourt today in the Toronto Star: “The continuing exclusion from cabinet of high-calibre MPs James Moore and Diane Ablonczy also is an indication of lingering grudges at the top of Harper’s government.” I’m going to offer Susan some help here. It’s a FACT that Diane introduced Stephen to his wife Laureen. So maybe spin that as “the Harper marriage is now on the rocks, and he’s blaming Ablonczy” ? That has more credibility than what you and your pals are offering up now, and is at least a fresh attack. BTW, Diane has been on Rutherford’s show many times, is quite candid with Dave. She is obviously a strong team player, very supportive of Harper. And once mentioned that being Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance gives her access to ALL government departments, thereby increasing her understanding of how government works. Hmmm, something that will be very useful if and when she runs for CPC leader in say 8 years ?

    Is it at all possible that this might be HER choice? Good Gawd. This eternal numbers game the useful idiots keep playing and their incessant cries of “sexism!” are becoming tiresome in the extreme–and we’re onto them.
    Maybe Diane Ablonczy has other priorities in her life at the moment. Maybe PM Stephen Harper has other plans for her down the road. Maybe she can be a more effective MP doing what she’s doing. Maybe she’s a CPC “undercover agent” (LOL) and being a Cabinet Minister would blow her cover.
    Who knows?
    Certainly the hyenas in the MSM don’t. But they keep howling out inanities because they’ve become hysterical. They just CAN’T accept that the CPC are in power and that PMSH is running circles around them WITHOUT EVEN TRYING.

  12. Thanks for that info Calgary Junkie. I have often thought that a person of Diane’s calibre would have a say in whether or not she would like a cabinet post. Sounds like she is quite satisfied where she is now. The media not only spin the story, they like to tell Harper how he should have done it.
    And ‘putting’ a woman in a portfolio just because she is a women is so ‘yesterday’, so Lib glib.It should be more about qualifications….have to say it…how qualified was Belinda for that portfolio?

  13. This is from a Toronto Star editorial by Carol Goar. She refers to Harper, Dion, McGuinty, Tory, but her preference is obviously for Dion. This is what she says, in part, about Harper:
    “He lacks the acuity, displayed by Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion, to pick up signals from the public. He either misread or downplayed voters’ desire for environmental leadership. That led to one of the major miscalculations of his prime ministership so far: a disappointingly weak policy on climate change that newly appointed Environment Minister John Baird will have to rectify.
    Harper lacks the maturity, exhibited by his Ontario counterpart John Tory, to roll with the punches. After a year in the country’s top job, he still overreacts to slights, lashes out at journalists and sulks when things don’t go his way.
    And he lacks the common touch that allows Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty to engage in a dialogue with voters. Harper may not be naturally gregarious, but he doesn’t have to treat Canadians with condescension or indifference.”
    What an ignorant set of opinions. Each comparison is without any validity. Dion has ‘acuity’? Is ‘acuity’ an action of pandering to mob psychology, to an emotionalism that has latched onto yet another apocalyptic hysteria – and to use that Mob-Dementia to garner votes? Is that Dion’s acuity or it is cynical opportunism?
    How about “overreacts to slights, lashes out at journalists and sulks when things don’t go his way.” That’s not Harper. It’s Dion.
    What about her claim that McGuinty ‘doesn’t treat Canadians with condescension or indifference”. You know, the fact that McGuinty has broken almost all of his campaign pledges – well, if that isn’t condescension and indifference, what is?
    But it is this kind of linear, top down authoritarian garbage from the MSM that proves how out of touch, how condesending, how indifferent, how immature and how useless, the MSM media are.
    Blogs, on the other hand, would tear this ignorant woman to bits; they would demand facts, they would insist that she substantiate her opinions and conclusions rather than, like medieval kings and modern dictators, pompously claim authority simply because there is no opportunity for her being called to account.

  15. Adding Diane Ablonczy and James Moore to Ministerial positions would have screams of too many Ministers from the Western part of the Country. Both above mentioned are part of the team, far too smart to be vindictive and petty Liberal/MSM style.
    It’s tiresome to read/watch the likes of Susan Delacourt, she should check her best before date or refresh and get real, she should know better, no sign of it though.
    There are so many very clever and talented people in the Party it’s a tough job to choose. We can rest assured they will all be contributing to the Party and the COUNTRY with their smarts as members of Parliament.

  19. I can actually remember when CTV Newsnet used to be a credible news organization. They are no longer credible, and I very rarely watch them anymore. There was a time when one TV in my home was reserved for CTV Newsnet. Funny how change of ownership of a network will determine what and how the news is reported. Once, in desperation, I told him, “The next time you say ‘studies show’ I’m gonna ask for chapter and verse”. Some time later — but not directly related to this — there was a 10+ year estrangement. During the thaw he told me how hurt he was by my remark. Still shaking my head over it.

  23. One of the most common rhetorical tactics employed by those who have nothing to go on (second perhaps only to the ad hominem) is to cite studies, stats, and experts.
    Ask the questions: “To which studies are you referring? Which experts? Where are those stats again?”
    BTW: “Experts” are also sometimes called, “confidential sources”, anonymous sources”, “sources”, “critics”, “party insiders”, etc.
    And, let us not forget the celebrity whose opinion must be valid because he/she is famous, Eg: “When asked her opinion of the Conservative leader, Avril Lavigne said ‘He’s scary'”

    It happens. Look at the people in Newmarket-Aurora, they voted for Belinda after she switched because her Daddy owns the Town, big Employer, etc. It was nothing to do with Party there. The people knew which side their bread was buttered on.
    It’s the typical sore loser reaction from some including the MSM. They go out of their way to find people to bad mouth Khan on National TV, part of their agenda as usual.

Liz J: After much thought triggered by the various bi-partisan floor-crossings I’ve come to the conclusion that we need to take the default view that the constituents are voting for the representative not for the party. After all, if not, why even bother having MPs. The MP makes his decision out of coarse calculation or out of noble sentiment (or some combination thereof) and faces the music at the next election. There’s been too much faux ethics here, methinks. As someone said recently, political ethics aren’t the same as general ethics — it’s more of a blood sport.

  27. Nothing new here, unfortunately. The Carol Goar article is pure garbage; again, nothing new from her. Is she kidding, McGuinty has the common touch (Carol, did you watch Mr Harper during the first intermission of the junior hockey game?)BTW, Bollocks, it’s called “significant digits” in statistics. So, the percentage of women hasn’t changed in any significant way, though there is one more woman in the cabinet now.
    The Ablonczy argument reminds of when Sheila Copps decreed there would be more women in combat & communication roles in the military. She didn’t bother to ask the women themselves. The result, a Radio Operator trial for women in Kingston, to which not one women volunteered.
    BTW, before you bring the tar and feathers out, the experience of women in roles such as pilots, combat arms has been totally positive IMHO.
    In fact, I lost two dear friends (ladies) who were killed on duty, one in a diving incident, the other in a helicopter search and rescue mission. And let’s not forget Nicola Goddard. All of those ladies, had they not been lost, were most certainly headed to senior officer (perhaps general) ranks.
    So, Ms Goar etal, let the women decide what they want to do.

    It’s not cynical Kate. It’s about a 99 percenter.
    Much of the MSM is so reflexively predisposed to score any “hit” they can on the cons (both big and small C) they screw up a lot. It’s hard to do homework and check facts whilst wetting yourself with euphoria. Stuff even gets made up.
    This behavior manifests itself beyond Canada. Witness American news mag Noseleak and it’s fabricated story about how Korans were being flushed at Gitmo. Or the BBC’s deliberate attempt to distort Pope Benedict’s remarks about Islam with the use of it’s foreign language services. In both cases people died.

  33. 1. I do think that Rona Ambrose was opposed by our leftie friends partly because she was a woman.
    2. Journalists (other than those who cover business) are pig ignorant about arithmetic. I still remember as an undergraduate at Carleton University that arts and science students took calculus in first year, while the journalism students took “statistics” – Math 25 according to recollection. I still remember passing by their classroom where they sat, sweating in fear, pounding away at desk calculators.
    About once a year the Blubb and Wail runs an article with the title (more or less) “Why women can’t do math”. It’s hilarous to the extent that it’s not insulting — I have encountered in my work many women who were and are EXTREMELY good at maths, and my own ability (such as it may be) is inherited from my two grandmothers, both of whom had minds like steel traps. My question is, “why can’t journalists and media people do math”?

  34. Perhaps the media learned to count from BC’s very own, “buisness as usual” Ujjal Dosanjh. His comment on the cabnet schuffle was BC got ripped off again, as we only had 2 cabnet min. and Sask got a second one. I guess he counts like 1 CM 2CM and another one and another one and so on.
    This caused me to check out the spread by province. BC does quite well with 18 MP’s we have 5 cabnet members that works out to 16.1% of cabnet positions.
    Now for the eye opening part (and I didn’t make this up) Ontario and Quebec have 47 elected members of parliment and have 16 members of cabnet. The 3 prarie provinces have 49 elected members of parliment and 7, thats right seven (not counting Harper) members of cabnet.
    Make it an east west split. West 65 members = 12 cabnet + PM. East 58 members = 19 cabnet.
    What’s wrong with this picture?

  36. We the public have read/watched, females in high places. Remember Sheila Copps crawling over the benches in the HofC to attack a govt member. Then there is Hedy/crossburning Fry. Don’t forget BS and all her affairs and breaking up marriages. The female liberals on Newman, Giggles, Susan and Julie and Lewand. They have not set a very high standard fpr women, so why would we want more. Even CBS is discovering that viewers want the truth and not spin, and could care less what the anchor looks like. It is women who have given women in positions of power a bad name, and the fact they were supported in all their gaffs by the sows and other Politically correct crap. It is women who have refused to admit they goofed. When men made errors the media was all over them, but when women did, the media slept thru it. How many women on the board of Magna-none. Women do not promote women, and hold grudges for years. Just look at Pelosi and Harmon in the US. Just imagine dion trying to get along with 103 women in his caucus. Of course, many of those 103 will go down to embarrassing defeat. Hopefully they will be running in the GTA. Wonder if any women will be involved in the coming RCMP charges. And, would it be possible to put a best before date on many of the talking heads and writers in the msm. Listening to Craig and the rest, they have not had a new idea, or changed position since trudeau. We deserve better.
