“One article, five headlines”

Damian Brooks;

Imagine for a moment that you’re Brian Hutchinson, a reporter and writer for national media conglomerate CanWest, ostensibly sent to Afghanistan to glean the truth and inform Canadians of it. You try your best, in difficult and unfamiliar circumstances. Some days you get it right, other days you don’t.
Now watch what nameless, faceless, unaccountable editors do to a piece with your name on it, just to satisfy their own prejudices and appeal to what they believe are the leanings of their readers.

Another explanation – headline writing is where the illiterate go to practice journalism.
Another
sloppy headline
caught by reader Michael Maltby; Troops raise Ortona Toast for first time since 1942″

…the error is repeated in the body of the story and webpage. Yahoo news manages to get the 1943 date right but not the patriotic Globe. I may be picky about this but after John Doyle’s “creepy” comment, the Globe deserves to be flogged.

  1. MSM editorial filters constitute a defacto official political authorization needed before any “news” is set before the public.
Why is the MSM so virulent against the ability of the internet to get news instantly to the most amount of people without editorial filtering?
    Seems self evident to me.

  2. Journalism as practiced before the advent of the internet, by its very nature was ideological. This was not as evident before it became a “profession”. You had an almost equal number on both sides of any question or event.
From Journalism schools, came the young socialist trained by neo communists themselves. The end justifies the means school of reporting. With its moral equivalency jelled into a slime ball of innuendo, lies, or misdirection. For the publics own good.
Most editorialists are about as familiar with the web, as Larry King.
Thus their repeated miscalculations & embarrassments we see almost daily. The endless false stories that fit into there leftist mentality, without a check or a real look. NYT’s anyone? CNN? CBC? Toronto Star?
Most honest ones I have read or meet are upfront on their own bias. Not so the left. There always objective. If you believe that, I have farm land in Northern Yukon for sale.
The good old hoodwinking day’s are over. I think these switching headlines are a last breath of desperation from these hucksters flailing about, while this liberal clans perceived power leeks away. Grain by encrusted grain, into the hourglass of irrelevance.
    Just my opinion.

  3. Headlines can and do drive public opinion, political will, social values, economic direction, and more.
Most Canadians are too busy trying to earn a living and pay their taxes, and do not have the time to look past the slanted media headlines.
Headlines are a powerful tool of Canada’s Media.
How much influence can media bias have ?? Just ask the people of the former USSR and Eastern Block. Pravda drove their adgenda for decades… right over a cliff.
Who would have thought that in one life time Canadians became so far ‘out-front’ of the Soviets we are now behind them. At least when it comes to being media gullible.

  4. I’d like to see what Hutchinson has to say about it!
IN the mean time we can chock this up to one more chink in the armor of credibility in the MSM!
