  1. Layton made two big goof in question period today.
Never congratulated Dion, or thanked Graham, just asked a question re environment-Will this government quit subsidizing big oil an ass comp (house erupts in laughter) and gas companies-Speaker says time ran out. Harper wondered if that slip was referring to him personally. Notice the front benches of the liberal side have changed. Now full of defeated candidates, or, the next cabinet if elected. BS not in front row. Many liberals had to find new seats. When did Dion do that, must have been busy since Sat. Iggy actually asked a question. Where are the que liberals sitting, that will be interesting. So far no defeated ones have resigned or crossed the floor, but just wait. Cdns wont enjoy Volpe in plain sight every day, or Bisson, or a few of the others.

  2. Here’s a thought that crossed my mind:
Re the SSM vote… we all know that PMSH wants to fulfill a promise and hold a vote on whether to re-open the SSM issue.
We also know he doesn’t have a hope in hell of having the house vote for the resolution – which is kind of the point: hold the vote, keep a promise and move on.
What worries me is what if the Libs/Dips pull a fast one and find some reason to be ‘outraged’ by the vote and they all decide to abstain, leaving us with the ‘go-ahead’ to re-open the issue. Not exactly where we want to be before an election.
Am I way off base here?
    Whaddya think?

  3. Scott..well it would certainly be unprecedented..i don’t know if you can abstain by whip an entire party on a confidence motion …it would be an interesting scenario though…
MaryT..yes, i did notice the faces on the front bench have changed..now we get to see the faux outrage(and emotion..!!) of the likes of Ken Dryden, Iggy (is he a walking zombie? zero animation!) etc ad nauseum
You can see the tact they will be taking up to the election..conservatives ” right wing, neo-con, mean spirited, dictatorial, [Stalinesque]” these are all words used in rapid fire today in question period..i feel they are going back to the old playbook of trying to paint the Conservatives as “scary”
Get used to it, you will hear a lot more of this in the coming weeks from all your favourites..including that sleaze bag Volpe..
“Meet the new boss, same as the old boss” indeed

  4. Best line heard today..
“Good to see Duffer back after a problem with his heart…uncle Mo’s offered to look into it for him, he might be able to scrounge one up for him next time he’s home.”
I can only add that while he is at it perhaps he can find a brain to be equally shared amongst Liberal front benchers…

  5. On Being Stephane Dion… not exactly acclaimation, was it?
“MONTREAL (CP) – It seemed a harmless gesture to reward the lowliest candidate for a gallant campaign. It may have changed the course of the Liberal leadership race, handing the crown to Stephane Dion.”

  6. having watched dion’s first question’s as opp leader i came to the same conclusion that many have, I had to listen very hard to what he was saying in english.
Iam sure that he is and will be a very inteligent opponent for the Pm & iam not being disrespectful to his broken english, but this could be his downfall to win votes in English speaking parts of Canada.
Now we try not to talk politics at my local legion, However on sat nite many were saying, this is all we need another Quebecer leading the liberals & becoming a possible PM in future.(iam being polite the way it was put)
They all know that iam blue so i just shrugged my shoulders & said maybe you should keep that in mind come the next election.

  7. Good to hear that BS is out of the front row. The less Canadians hear from that twit, the better.
Dion is, as far as I can tell, just another Chretieniste. Mr. Big Spender, Mr. Big Government Liberal.
Dion remarked that he wants a “competitive” economy for Canada, while pledging to saddle that same economy with a $5 billion a year Kyoto tax.
I think he also referred to tax cuts as “useless”.
The Liberals, I think, have moved decidedly to the left with their leader. They signalled that in spades with all the green T-shirts at the convention.
Personality-wise, Dion reminds me of former Manitoba Conservative Leader Stuart Murray. A perennial opposition party politician if there ever was one.

  8. …as a member of the 4 million mark watch committee, I’d like to nominate a prize for the poor unsuspecting blogger.
A Leader pothole calendar (if they are still around).

  9. If SSM became an election issue, the best thing Harper could do is add it as a ballot question in the next election. Let the voters decide, as it should be in a democracy. And then move on.
The results depend on the wording of the question, ie: (SSM) Should the recognised term be marriage, or civil union (like England and France have decided)?
    Or,
Should the future implications of such a law be studied before being voted on?
Who knows, if the majority said civil union, or further study, the tables would be turned and the other parties would have a lot of explaining to do.

  10. Dion has mentioned before that he would like to implememnt a Carbon Tax, I guess he just figures that hardworking canadians don’t mind paying another tax & we can afford it. Is this how we will pay for the 10’s of Billions Kyoto is going to cost you.
Do they not get it? We are Taxed to the Max, Bankrupt’s are at an all time high, Poverty is on the rise, we are paying the highest in taxes in the G7 all for the sake of stupidity & socialist bottomless pit programs.

  11. Ezra Levant makes the valid point in the Calgary Sun of the non issue of Dion’s French citizenship by MSM.
A conservative leader with dual US citizenship would be headline stuff.
As well, the poor English of Dion matters not a whit to MSM.
Only Harper has to speak perfect French to avoid the criticism by the press.
No geeky Dion descriptions will flow as they did for Manning.
The bias is palpable between the coverage of the socialist left and conservatives.
I suspect that like a goldfish that doesn’t understand that it lives in water, Canadian MSM do not understand their biased hard left tilt in political coverage.
Mark Steyn correctly call it left tilting MSM groupthink.

  12. Stephane Dion on not being…Stephane Dion
Stephane Dion, on the matter of his dual citizenship with France (he was born in Canada)…
“Multiple identities should be seen as an asset, not a threat”
“There is nothing wrong with multiple identities. The hearts of people are big enough to accept different identities. Canadian citizenship will give me my rights. Identity is the way I feel about the country.”
I believe the psychiatric term for that is “schizophrenia”, or Multiple Personality Disorder. Which Stephane Dion wants to be Prime Minister? Is “Kyoto” really the name of a dog, or is it one of Stephane’s “identities”? Which “Stephane” did the Liberal Party elect? Do they know? Does he know? If Canadian citizenship gives him rights, what does French citizenship give him? Discounts on vin ordinaire? Inexplicable desire to turn and run? A place to hide? Seats at Cannes? Vichychoise?
Why does a committed Canadian federaliste feel the need to hold a foreign passport, especially one who would be king, er, Prime Minister? And should Canadians tolerate such an individual as Prime Minister? The Bloc Quebecois are not at all obtuse about their desire to remove Quebec from Canada. Is Stephane Dion hedging his bets?

  13. Update: Unlike the GG, M. Dion did not actively apply for French nationality:
    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20060901.wdion/BNStory/National/?pageRequested=all
“Mr. Dion’s mother, Denyse, was a real-estate agent. Born in Paris, she gave her children their dual citizenship; Léon Dion would joke he was the only one in the household to be solely Canadian.
(Mr. Dion does not have a French passport and has not voted in a French election, his staff says.)..”
Nonetheless, he should renounce French citizenship (h/t to my wife who Googled better, independently of me).

  14. It’s been said here before, but I couldn’t believe it.
    Now, it’s confirmed.
To the long perverted and corrupt list of who the Liberals are and what they represent, we can now add that their newly elected leader and provocateur of change is a stinkin’ CITIZEN OF FRANCE.
    It boggles the mind.

  16. 17. Calgary Clipper; thought this thrd would be quicker. Re: Norris – We have a Sheila Fraser in Fred Dunn, the problem is not much makes it to the papers. Once in awhile you get a little whif like this bit about Norris that was buried right at the bottom of the article. New York Times ^ | 12-04-06 | Tom Zeller
Separating Hyperbole From Horror in Iraq
By TOM ZELLER Jr. Published: December 4, 2006 Over the course of last week, an Associated Press article — one subsequently challenged by the military — in which six Sunni worshipers were reportedly doused in kerosene and burned alive by Shiite attackers, became the worst kind of totem.
For bloggers who believe that the media has been drawing false pictures of mayhem in Iraq, the insistence of the American military and Iraqi officials that the burning incident appeared to be a mere rumor was proof that their suspicions were correct.
“Getting the News From the Enemy” was how the Flopping Aces blog (floppingaces.net) tracked the developing face-off between the military and A.P.
    …….. …….
The executive editor of The Associated Press, Kathleen Carroll, in a meeting in her office Friday afternoon, explained that the agency had already done all it could to respond to the uncertainties by vigorously re-reporting the article, and suggested that to engage these questions — to continue to write about them — merely fueled a mad blog rabble that would never be satisfied. …-

  25. Blogs
The “Captain Jamil Hussein” problem, an incident in which the Associated Press appears to have used a fake policeman as a source for an extended period of time, raises the generic problem of how to verify news stories generated by a field correspondent. The problem is not confined to the MSM. Bloggers are increasingly bombarded with tips and reports from individuals they may have corresponded with, but whom they have never met, and whose information may be questionable. There are great opportunities under those circumstances for pranksters and malevolent persons to spread disinformation. Although the problem is most marked in the case of the mainstream media (MSM) it is not confined to them. The problem of acquiring accurate intelligence, even in the face of active disinformation, is a challenge to everyone. Hence, the “Captain Jamil Hussein” problem is typical of a class of challenges probably best understood in the context of a simplified intelligence cycle: that of collection-analysis-dissemination. …-

  27. Did anyone note Dion’s reference to tax cuts as USELESS.
    That’s right,
    tax cuts are USELESS,
    according to Dion.
I hope the CPC puts that one in the vault for the election.

  28. Has anyone ever read the Kyoto Accord, or any part of it. Where can one get a copy. Does it really exist or is it just a myth. We have to start now to get the truth out about it. I know there were pics of some countries signing it, but what did they sign. It was Strongs idea at some earth conference, but he also dreamed up Petrocan and we know what that cost us. Is there still a tax on gas to pay for it. Remember when we just sent dividend cheques out of the country to the owners of the oil company, which are paid out of profits. The profit stayed in Canada. Then Strong thought we should buy the company and send principal and interest pymts, out of the profit, to the owners. Who was the finance minister when this happened. Hundreds of small gas stations were bought out, put out of business and forced to go PetroCan. Millions were spent, and what happened. Stations were closed for months for the renovations etc and customers went elsewhere and never come back. Lots of lost jobs. Then, they sold PetroCan and dozens of small towns lost gas stations that have never been replaced. Others closed because they were forced to spend thousands of dollars to convert to PetroCan and refused because there was no way they could recover the cost. Of course all those closures did increase GHG as many rural residents had to drive to the next town to get gas, and still do. And these same brainheads are behind kyoto.

  29. revenue canada follies: a pattern of abuse of authority, greed and heavy handedness
    the quick version
1975 I accept a position in st catharines at the university and rent an apartment at 567 ontario street in the north end
next year I get a letter from revcan demanding copies of receipts to back up my living expense deduction.
I photocopy the cancelled cheques showing
    – the same amount every time
    – paid to landlord
    – date
    – purpose
    – my name
revcan boys reject the photocopies as proof demanding receipts which I don’t have, having naively thought that cancelled cheques act as proof of payment anywhere in the WORLD.
except canada and specifically revcan. any jurisdiction in the world, any court, retailer, kitchen gathering, bank etc etc in the COUNTRY will accept a cancelled cheque as proof of payment.
    but not revenue canada.
I luck in and spot the landlord at a restaurant after I had moved which was before revcan’s little trick to cheat me out of a legitimate deduction. I get the receipt and also find out from the former landlord what the revcan boys are up to. “quota”
fast forward to 1988, st catharines still, now I’m a freelancer teaching at a private college passing myself off a self employed, same as all the rest of the faculty.
revcan boys show up and sweepingly reject ALL my deductions for self employment claiming I am ‘employed under contract’. no contract exists, and, not wishing to recalculate taxes till kingdom come, I fight their decision.
appeal is denied, so I shrug and mosey over to the ministry of labour and file for 3 yrs vacation pay seeing as apparently I was an employee. college is livid but I remind them how I pleaded with them to support my appeal and they did nothing.
all’s well until revcan boys recalculate taxes and instead of *moving* my earnings from the ‘professional fees’ column, they ADD it to the ‘salary and wages’.
adding umpteen thousands in ‘back taxes’ and ‘penalties’ and ‘interest’.
it takes a year and a half for them to deign to listen to me explain THEIR error. in the mean time Ive moved down the QEW to burlington, resulting in the hamilton office insisting I deal with the st catharines office instead. LOL !!! I enquire would they insist on likewise if I had, say, moved to the interior of BC or St Johns Newfoundland?
no, Im not going to drive back and forth umpteen times to st catharines and by the way, my patience has ended sirrah, and if you don’t CLEAR THIS UP NOW my next stop is the local newspaper and in case you haven’t noticed, Ive got it all DOCUMENTED.
fast forward to 1996. Im working on a construction job in stoney creek. the boss (who isnt really the boss) is the type whose office consists of the dashboard of his pickup truck. this by the way is where I learned everything I wanted to know about 3 phase wiring.
payday consists of him making a rough calculation and cutting a cheque for the net pay.
    sans pay slip.
I enquire the regular workers who assure me proper T4 will come forth at the appropriate time and, making my own ‘calculation’ that raising a stink about pay slips at this time is a sure way to get laid off, I await the T4 at tax time.
it doesn’t arrive and never does.
I’m put on the phone with a most snarky revcan boy with attitude aplenty, listening to him claim that the boss is ‘the guy that signs the cheques’. (oh really, does that make the payroll clerk your ‘boss’?)
hardly. he was the general contractor, but he was given a weekly amount by the owner of the new building to cover his labour costs. one of my bosses was the owner’s brother-in-law, hired to work alongside us all and act as ‘eyes and ears’ to prevent abuse of the set up of covering the contractor’s weekly labour costs. I consider him one of my bosses (he hired me) and also the electrical subcontractor who is the one who really gets to tell me my day to day duties.
the revcan boy is again attempting to cheat me out of my money by claiming the absence of a T4 will result in an estimated rate of pay. which is going to result yet again, in taxes assessed which I DON’T OWE but them’s the rules!
conclusion: **** OFF revenue canada or whatever you call yourselves this week.
and then adscam happens and my whole attitude about ‘paying the taxes I legitimately owe’ takes a flying leap out the window.
of a 20 story building if ya know what I mean.

  30. Excerpt: Seduction
On the Seduction of the Liberal Agenda:
The liberal agenda’s favors seduce the people a little at a time, always playing on their regressive longings to be indulged.
Favor by favor, accompanied by the constant drumbeat of entitlement propaganda, the otherwise intelligent citizen is led to an increasingly erroneous conception of the proper role of government in a free society.
Like a child molester, the liberal politician grooms his constituents until their natural cautions against yielding power in exchange for favors dissolves in reassurance.
Under the creed of modern liberalism, he is not called to maturity but is instead invited to begin a second childhood.
Like the child at play, he is given, or at least promised, ultimate economic, social and political security without having to assume responsibility for himself.
The liberal agenda requires him to remain in an artificial environment
–the daycare program of the grandiose state-
-where he need not become an adult,
take responsibility for his own welfare,
nor cooperate with others to achieve what the state will give him for nothing. …-

  33. C4 to feature broadcaster in niqab for Christmas
    The Daily Mail ^ | 5th December 2006
Channel 4 is to reignite controversy over the wearing of the veil – by featuring a Muslim woman in full niqab giving the broadcaster’s alternative Christmas message.
The woman, today named only as Khadija and said to be a lecturer in Islamic studies, will go head-to-head with the Queen when she gives her annual speech to the nation on 25 December.
Producers are said to have “discovered” her after a month-long search for a suitable candidate.
A spokesman for the channel added: “We felt it fitting that Channel 4’s alternative Christmas message should be given by a Muslim woman in a year when issues of religious and racial identity and freedom of expression have dominated the news agenda.
“Khadija has a wide range of interesting views about life as a British Muslim woman”
Khadija – who is in her early thirties and from the Midlands – caught TV bosses’ attention for “being articulate, engaging and interesting”.
She is due to record the speech within the coming fortnight and is expected to reflect on the past year.
While the channel is refusing to give more specific details of her background for fear that she will be inundated with interview requests, they said she was born in Zimbabwe, is a British citizen and has been wearing the full niqab – which covers everything but the eyes – for ten years. …

You know, that underground economy. Usually the amt owing was around 200.00 and many just paid without question. They have just announced that all ministerial employees for the past 20 years are going to be audited (investigated) by some non partisan group. Bet many of them are shaking in their boots. A word of advise, when and if you are being audited, re-assessed etc Revcan boys already have copies of all your bank records etc. You could be asked to explain a deposit of x amt made on x date years ago, that was not repeated every month etc. In one case it turned out to be the first family allowance check the family received.
