The United Nations is investigating a suspected child prostitution ring involving its peacekeepers and government soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the U.N. mission said on Thursday.
Among accusations being investigated is that pimps are using the presence of U.N. peacekeepers to lure vulnerable girls to go and work as prostitutes in areas of South Kivu where they are deployed, the mission said in a statement.

Last year, the U.N. barred peacekeepers in Congo from fraternizing with local people after investigations found some soldiers and civilian staff were guilty of rape and paedophilia including enticing hungry children with food or money in exchange for sex.

ET:leftist – “your quotation supports my view that the men are privileged because the economic viability rests with them – This ‘modern economy’, based around market sale of crops, which privileges the men, is directly embedded in the old traditional African economies of the area.”
I was disagreeing with some of what you said but not with the general idea that male privilege has an economic basis.
“The point is, that AIDS in Africa is not a problem of the
‘psychological nature of men’, which feminists assume to be ‘patriarchal, domineering, blah blah. It is a political problem of a non-industrial society that privileged the men for their economic role. That takes time to change, and will only change when the economy enables economic strength from both genders. And, when the political rhetoric promotes this type of economy.”
Some feminists take this position. I certainly don’t defend that point of view. I agree that the dominance of men has an economic basis – a good marxist position 🙂
You’re right, nomdenet (1:34 p.m. today), Stephen Lewis was, indeed, appealing to women’s baser nature, may I say, to always want to blame problems on men.
Hey, I do it all the time: Maybe the blame game is programmed into the sexes: It’s HIS fault. No, it’s HER fault…!
Whatever, Stephen Lewis, being a dyed in the wool feminist, has obscured the real issue here–and it is that both men and women need to take responsibility for the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa before any headway can be made against this viral infection.
Condoms are not the answer, and sadly, Stephen Lewis is propagating this pseudo-solution, too. The feminists have never liked abstinence; they like to think that they are just as free to be sexually promiscuous as men (they wail, “It’s not fair that men can be sexually active and we can’t!”)
The truth is, like it or not, it is women who suffer the most from the acceptance on the part of any society that promiscuous sex is the norm. Until recently, it’s always been women who have been the gatekeepers of morality, for their sake, for the sake of their children, and for the sake of society. Sadly, radical feminists have shucked this role and, ironically, it’s women and children who suffer the most.

leftist – very funny. The analysis of the economic role within the sociocultural behaviour of a society is hardly the exclusive domain of the left, or of Marxists.

Right on. Very sadly. We’ve got a lot of very unhappy kids out there. Check out the body piercings and other mutilations, the in-the-gutter language, the slut dressing, school drop outs, and many other signs of alienation and sadness. Of course, the feminists aren’t responsible for all of this, but I sure remember a lot more well adjusted young people–until they got radicalized and started to behave like toddlers–in the 50s and 60s.
IIRC, the report on human trafficking pointed out that it is not just Israel that has suffered human trafficking.
So have Vancouver and LA and NY.
That is because a trafficker will always prefer cities that have people with money to spend and in the ME that means Tel Aviv and Israel.
SERIOUS QUESTION: Is “Bob” a new pen name alias for “Steve_d”? Identical worldview…and as I recall, their styles seem similar.
Kate, can you look into this?
Israel does not even rate a mention at humantrafficking dot org
Richard Gere represents the worldview that gave us American Pie, so it’s understandable that he would sneer at the idea of abstinence. Bill Clinton has a proven record when it comes to keeping his pants zipped up. Gere, Clinton, Stephen Lewis and others of their crowd all subscribe to a postmodern worldview, so truth is a subjective thing to them. The truth is that the ABC approach to AIDS actually works. Abstinence and Being faithful are more important in the fight against AIDS than is Condom use. Uganda has proven it, dropping their HIV infection rate drastically, unlike the African nations that listen to Stephen Lewis’s condoms and drugs mantra.

This is a sign/symptom of a very SICK organization. This can not be tolerated. Period.
Given that these troops are entrusted with the safety of the world’s most vulnerable citizens, they should pay a higher than normal punishment for any crimes commited against humanity.
If Kofi Anan can not do his job, with the money and resources available, then he should step aside. He has to lead by example and so do those under his command.
There is news on LGF that European Countries are refusing to be sitting ducks between the U.N. & Hezbollah. Who can blame them?
There is also news that night vision equipment (250 pcs.) provided by the U.N. to Iran in 2003, for a U.N. administered Drug Control Program, was found by Isreal at Hezbollah HQ.
Neither of those are a surprise, they just point to yet more inadequacies within the U.N.
Regarding AIDS; it’s a many sided problem in ALL countries, developed and otherwise. I would say condom use, education, and female ’empowerment’ are essential to ALL of the world’s women (or other victims). Cures and band-aids (microbocides) are temporary. Ineffective without the ability to say no, the education to know better. Whether in Canada or Congo, if women do not know their bodies, their rights, if they are not FREE to say no, nor understand why they must, then we will always have AIDS and abortions and other STD’s, including cervical cancer. There will never be enough money in this world to respond to, or cure every epedemic that comes along. I doubt there will ever be enough police (U.N. etc.), educators or role models to save women from themselves or abusive enviroments.
Cheese, please. Surrenderitis, a la France, is endemic across EU.

Europe Backs Out of Lebanon Cease-Fire
They’re all backing out.
None of the European countries who were so loudly calling for a cease-fire in Lebanon are willing to commit troops. They’re afraid of being sitting ducks, human shields for Hizballah. And they should be: Europeans Delay Decision on Role Inside Lebanon. (Hat tip: Ron.)
PARIS, Aug. 20 — The shaky, United Nations-brokered cease-fire in Lebanon suffered another blow on Sunday when the European countries that had been called upon to provide the backbone of a peacekeeping force delayed a decision on committing troops until the mission is more clearly defined. …- LGF
The founding of the UN was stage-managed by Stalin’s spy in the White House: Alger Hiss.
August 21
1944 The seeds of the United Nations are planted
On this day in 1944, representatives from the United States, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and China meet in the Dumbarton Oaks estate at Georgetown, Washington, D.C., to formulate the formal principles of an organization that will provide collective security on a worldwide basis-an organization that will become the United Nations. (historychannel)
ALGER HISS’S LOOKING GLASS-WARS: AN INPENETRABLE LIE:
Most historians now accept that Alger Hiss fed secrets to Soviet agents…Hiss was the elegant diplomat who sat behind President Franklin Roosevelt at his Yalta meeting with Stalin and managed the conferences that created the United Nations …-

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s always the same. These guys talk a good line but when the going gets tough and they’re the ones who’s butts are threatened, they wimp out.
The EU should keep their mouths firmly shut, especially when it comes to roundly trouncing Israel: “They’re the aggressors, they’re killing innocent women and children; they violated the ceasefire.” Absolute BS.
If you can’t stand the heat, EU, then get the H*** out of the kitchen and say no more. It’s always easy to be the “big man” on the sidelines. Well, you’re on the sidelines, you’ve proven you’re not up to walking the talk, so truly butt out, will you?
Too many of the French were collaborators and defeatists in WWII (and where did it get them, except the lasting contempt of other nations who did their fighting for them). They don’t seem to have changed.
Quel scandale.
b.a.t.b.; If you didn’t read the LGF link I hope you will consider it. There is a completely different slant. Even Australia is refusing. The reasons being cited are “no confidence” in the U.N. and memories of Bosnia.
Cheri – I agree that the UN is a thug operation and no use for anything good. However, the EU generally likes the UN. Like batb says, the Europeans rarely put their $ where their mouths are. Ironically, the EU types wanted a ceasefire–I didn’t and wish the Israelis had obliterated Hezbollah–but now won’t step up to the plate when asked. “Cheese eating surrender monkeys”, no doubt about it.
And I completely agree on the French. Where I found a catch in this argument was Australia’s views.
Alger Hiss is a very educational study in espionage and credibility.
he had his defenders right to the end, a lifetime of denials aaaaaand then …..
the truth will out, the truth will out.
