With 120 officers in the search (and headquartered in Spiritwood, pop. 900), there is no news. The accused knows the terrain (hills, pastureland, few roads, thickly wooded areas) very well, having lived there most of his life. Police are giving out no information on the nature of the wounds sustained by Marc Bourdages and Robin Cameron.
More at the Star Phoenix.
There is another RCMP briefing scheduled for 1:30 local time. You can listen live at CKOM.com.
Update – Not so good news – it’s not confirmed by RCMP, but local radio is reporting from other sources that Constable Robin Cameron’s condition is “grave”. Both were visited by RCMP Commissioner Zacardelli today, which sources say indicates the seriousness of their injuries.

The Toronto Star seems to have a somewhat different reading on the suspect than just about anyone else in the country (see http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1152483906896&call_pageid=968332188492&col=968793972154&t=TS_Home):
SPIRITWOOD, Sask.—As RCMP continued a massive manhunt yesterday for a suspect in the shooting of two Saskatchewan Mounties, a friend of the accused described him as easygoing and “super nice.”
“He was a great friend,” said Jeanette Franson, 30. “I was a friend of his for quite a while.
“We stopped spending a lot of time together about five years ago, but he was super nice. I never had any problems with him.”
Apart from wishing the best for the injured officers and their families,I hope this sc*mbag gives his pursuers a good excuse to kill him on sight….that would be justice!
Oh man, that’s terrible news. I so hope she makes it, keep my fingers crossed.
I agree with you CO so long as no more officers are injured in an exchange. I also hope to god that this guy has not holed up in someone’s home, the thought it chilling.
Very scary…this story reminds me of a story up from Cold Lake ten years ago. A man by the name of Barclay McFie dragged his estranged wife, Carol Meredith, from her relative’s home in Cold Lake and killed her in a van in the woods near Cold Lake. The manhunt last almost two weeks until Macfie was spotted in Cold Lake. He is now serving 25 years without parole. I attended the trial and was astonished with the cold indifference of this man. I honestly believe he felt he did nothing wrong, that Carol was his and he had the right to take her life. Since that case, I often wonder how many mentally ill people there are out there that believe they are above the law. This guy certainly fits the profile. I know he will soon be found and likely he will be found alive. From what I have read and heard about him, he sounds like he is not the kind to take his own life.
I remember back in 1970 when two Mounties were killed north of Duck Lake. The search for the killer lasted a couple of weeks if I remember correctly (I was only 15 at the time) before they found him dead in the woods. Can’t remember if it was suicide or not. So, its very possible that this could take some time. It would be interesting to know if the fugitive is a outdoorsman or not. That would be a big factor. I also wouldn’t be surprised if they call in the military to provide support.

I wish they wouldnt use that word ‘grave’ in the press releases.
gives me the creeps.
Robert,
“Grave” gives me the creeps too. But, it wasn’t a press release, it was a report on “local radio”, not exactly the best source of “news”; they’re much better on talk radio. However, the two cops were wearing body armour, so you might think the injuries are head or neck wounds – never a good place to get shot. The fact that Zacardelli’s been in Saskatoon for a few days is troubling too, as in it’s pretty serious.
Andy
Another Right Wing Rural terorist strikes out at the Police. Both were shot in the head. Both may die. What’s my point? More Police are killed by our white terrorist than by Non-whites. The police should do a sweep of Rural Sask and sieze any weapon deemed illegal. Use Special certificates like our gov’t uses on immigrants. With all the hate envy and Right Wing attitude there is in RuralSask more of this is going to happen. You right wingers are a violent bunch.Thatcher gets his wife killed, that ex Tory gets caught with a 14 year old prostitute,Dick Culver had to leave(Facing Charges),Most of DEvine’s caucus in jail,Ralph Klein beat up his wife it was rumoured. I think we’d better watch Harper and his bunch of Good ole boys. It make me sick .
You know ok4ua, my initial reaction was to simply ignore what you just posted. Against my better judgment, I reconsidered.
Quite apart from the nearly incoherent nature of what you posted, does it not occur to you that bringing up the nonsense that you expressed just MIGHT be a little inappropriate on a topical thread that is devoted to the plight of two young police officers who are currently fighting for their lives in hospital???
I knew there was a reason that i despised Rabble
And thanks to ok4ua i now know why..
First of all I want to apologize to anyone who found my first comment a bit harsh.
But the post from ok4ua hit a very raw nerve at this moment. I live in a neighboring town to Spiritwood and Im seeing the effects of what has happened on the people and the community involved. I guess once it is involves people that you can put a voice and a personality to, it hits closer. As much as ok4ua is entitled to an opinion, i just wish it was an informed opinion.
Now as per the rules my troll feeding is done

Andy, the term “grave” was given by the RCMP spokesman during an update by police at about 1:45pm Monday. I heard the press conference on CKOM radio. So it wasn’t the media in this case.
For those of you not familiar with the Spiritwood area, SASK has had so much moisture the past couple years that the wooded and grassy areas there are extremely lush (and FULL of mosquitoes!) right now. Most low lying spots are full of water. In fact, a thunderstorm rolled thru Monday night. So, it would be very tough for the search crews to spot this guy. And, if he is “in the bush”, man, I can’t see him surviving, unless he’s found shelter somewhere! Wonder if the ravens will find him first!?
I’m sorry for the two RCMP but I stand by what I say. Us and Alberta are the MIssissippi of the North.
What should they do after they hopfuly catch him HANG HIM FROM A TREE
well jackfish:
what if he set himself up with a hideout way ahead of time ‘just in case’ and is headed there now?
we just have to wait and see. sometimes it can take > a year for these fugitives to spring the trap.
Hey JackFish:
Thanks for the “grave” source. I have a problem with CKOM as a news source. They now have a story about an internet “stocker”. Editing may not be a strong point! But, I’ll be stocking them.
