CFL Thread

New Champion Minuteman Wild Imagine Nation
As it turns out, I’m home a day earlier than planned. (Winning the group from the classes helped speed the process somewhat.)
While I was gone, reader Peter L. wrote with a good sports-related topic suggestion;

Once again the CFL is about to kick off.
How about another open thread this year so we can boost our teams?
Go Green, until they meet Big Red 😉

Have it it!

  1. I’ll second that!
BTW,still can’t bring myself to”HURRAH” for the LIONS,am still smarting over their MONUMENTAL collapse last season!Guess I need just a little more time to grieve!

  2. Riders Rock! Although, from the looks of it, the whole west division is going to be a tough nut to crack for anyone. Crack? No I wasn’t talking about Winnipeg or Toronto’s “imports”.
For the Riders, the first 4 games are key, they are all western opponents which means they are four point games.
I’m just shaking with anticipation for the season to start. Soon . . . .
    Cheers,
    lance

  3. here is something for the GREENS from a Red(neck)
A Cornell University study that appeared in the journal Natural Resources Research in July 2005 found that producing ethanol from plants such as corn, sunflowers and soybeans uses more energy than the fuel generates.
In terms of energy output compared with the amount of energy required to produce ethanol, the study found:
Corn requires 29 per cent more fossil energy than the fuel produced.
Switch grass requires 45 per cent more fossil energy than the fuel produced.
Wood biomass requires 57 per cent more fossil energy than the fuel produced.
Best way for producing ethanol is ethane. however , converting ethane to ethanol is essentially half burning it to be 50% fuel and 50% water.to think of farmers asking for subsidies to grow something that costs more in fuel than it makes. only in Canada— pity us.
    but congrates on the win.

  4. Cripes, what an ugly looking mutt! : )~
Regarding the CFL, I’ve figured out the Rough Riders are the Green, who are the Red, the Stampeders? I’m not much into CFL, though I do watch and enjoy it, I like the NFL better because with 4 downs there is a better balance between the running/passing games.

  5. of course the REDs are the Stamps.
the Flames are Red, the mile is Red, the Stamps are Red, the people are Rednecks.
only the Libs are out of place with the colour.

  6. only the Libs are out of place with the colour.
Didn’t this sea of rednecks just overwhelmingly help vote in our current excellent federal sea of blue?

  7. I’m only now getting over the emotional letdown of my Sens losing to Buffalo in the second round, oh well, Go Renegades!! Oh, wait a minute….

  8. Lessee… football? Ummm… pass… goes over my head… guess I’m a dork, then.
Hmm… another winner for Kate and the doggy. Excellent… well-done! Give yourself and the little guy a pat on the head for me!
As this is an open thread and there seems to be a sporting mood, may I refer y’all to a post I did over at Exposed Agenda re. Pat Robertson doing 2000 pounds in the leg press? That’s the beginning of a bit of information about myself I don’t think I’ve really mentioned before.
Worth a read for anyone curious about the guy who calls himself “Canadian Sentinel”:

  9. Just saw the CTV report on the PPG bias.
Boy, do they and the PPG really have a nasty case of denial.
Of course they went out of their way to only present their side of the story. Sure, they told us what PMSH has to say, but then they attempt to argue against it… with claims made by MSM and PPG types, naturally.
Not biased? Far as I’m concerned, they just confirmed that they are, notwithstanding their brief clips of difficulties past PMs had with the PPG. Funny how they failed to show or even mention the name Jean Chretien… anyone think HE had any real problems with the PPG? And considering how much he abused MSMers, for eg. making sexist and ageist (ageist towards someone much younger, bizarre as it sounds)remarks to Christina Lawand, brushing off a reporter’s question by saying “For me, pepper, I put it on my plate… next!”, and physically threatening a terrified reporter in the lobby area…
Why did the PPG let Chretien off the hook?
Anyone got any ideas? Why him?!
We don’t need the PPG. They’re some kind of elitist snob club, apparently controlled by someone or some committee… who would that be? There should be an investigation into the organizational/operational nature of the PPG.
The PPG we don’t need. They claim they “want to do their job properly”… well, what do they think their job is? To ignore the issues of the day and ask irrelevant attack questions to attempt to harm the Conservatives and Mr. Harper?
So what if Harper’s people put together a list for reporters to sign? The Liberals did the same and the PPG kissed their fat-cat asses nevertheless… but walk out like immature high-schoolers when the Tories do it. Not biased? Sure… and bears don’t shit in the woods.

  10. Ricky Willams would have fit in better with the B.C Lions. He may not be the smartest guy around but he was one of my favorite NFL players, and should be a hellava draw. More so than Rocket Ismail 🙂
p.s When the Oilers win the cup, please keep in mind Edmonton is already called the City of Champions…

  11. I hope the Greens clobber the Rednecks. Even if they don’t, hey, it’s an excuse to drink beer and act stupid. Ah, freedom…

  12. Grats on the win Kate!
And heres hoping that the Stamps don’t completely SUCKETYSUCKSUCK this year. I cheer for em every time, and they’ve sucked two years running… Guess I’m just the loyal type.
First year in a wheelchair though, anyone know if I can still get good seats?

  13. For “The Hack”; Ottawa is gone in a dispersal draft, which of course means Winnepeg is now once again back in the Western Conference!

  14. Congratulations Kate!
Heres hoping for a repeat in the grey cup. Go Esks go!

  15. Congratulations Kate!
Heres hoping for a repeat in the grey cup. Go Esks go!

  16. Someone said Ricky Williams would fit in better with the Lions – because of easy access to dope?

  17. …I hope the Oilers go ALL the way. Shades of Calgary ’04. Hope this time they beat the refs and not just the other team.
I guess it went both ways last night, some really doubious calls, if this keeps up the NHL will become a panzie “C” girls league where no hitting or crease clearing is allowed.
Let the guys play the game!

  18. Congratulations Kate,
    And thanks for running SDA.
You sure are one busy lady!

  19. The Sea of Rednecks.
the best thing about a Calgary football game.
there are always plenty of Esk fans, Sask fans, Trona fans or BC fans or even Winterpeg fans in the crowd.
The Calgary crowd could be a poster for football cultural diversity. And all the beer you can slop.

  20. “Someone said Ricky Williams would fit in better with the Lions – because of easy access to dope?”
Yes. Easy access to world class premium quality dope…
    ” Shades of Calgary ’04.”
    No. The Oilers will win…
“the best thing about a Calgary football game. there are always plenty of Esk fans, Sask fans, Trona fans or BC fans or even Winterpeg fans in the crowd.”
The best thing about being at a Eskimo game is all of the wins/championships held over the head of Sask, Trona, B.C or Winterpeg fans…

  21. “IF the Oilers win they could put Cham back in the city sign.”
    …instead of ville de champignons?
    hehehehe

  22. “For “The Hack”; Ottawa is gone in a dispersal draft, which of course means Winnepeg is now once again back in the Western Conference!”
Ah, I think you mean “back in the EASTERN Conference”, which is where I said they would be representing.
Toronto finishes first in the division, followed by Winnipeg who narrows out both Hamilton and Montreal (poor Montreal finishes no worst than 7-11, but that just nudges them out of playoffs for the first time since a very long time ago).
Winnipeg beats Hamilton at home and then upsets Toronto at the Rogers Centre.
    Just watch.

  23. To: ALbertan Technophile,
“First year in a wheelchair though, anyone know if I can still get good seats”
The wheel chair seeting is over the “Red and White” club at the north end of the stadium. Do you know the stadium at all? Good access from the h/c parking stalls on the east side.
Big Red, AKA the Stamps, are a stand pat team from the end of the season. If you remember, I said that they would not show up untill Labor Day, this they did.
We also picked up Yeow from the ‘Gades. http://calsun.canoe.ca/Sports/Football/2006/05/28/1602051-sun.html
Added Danny McManis as a back up (AT first I said WTF???, but on second thoughts he will be a great help to Smiling Hank.
The only thing I see as bad for us is if the Oilers win the cup, and then the Green and Gold win the Grey Cup Edmonton They will put up a bigger sign!!
As for Ricky Williams in the Double Blue ( http://calsun.canoe.ca/Sports/OtherSports/2006/05/28/1602047-sun.html ) Toronto wants to kill the CFL so they can get an NFL team. It won’t make any difference to them.
    Cheers and enjoy the season
    Hayseed

  24. Hayseed, Thanks for the info. I’ve made it to a few games, when I was healthy. But I was dead tired from 60 hour work weeks and mildly blotto. (work hard, play hard eh?)So I don’t remember much about the Stadium.
Gonna probably try to get opening day tickets.

  25. A scratch behind the ears, and under the chin for your doggie. Well done.
    Go Lions
    Go Seahawks
Go Bruins (OK, I have been suffering for a while)
However, with free agency what it is, I think it was Seinfeld who said we are really only chearing for cloth. Ever since my devotion to following any team has diminished substantially.

  26. I see that what it says in the spam I get true.. drugs are cheaper in Canada. Argos are making a mistake with Ricky Williams. Sad that CFL has to pick up the losers.

  27. Congrats first of all Kate!
As for football Go Stamps Go!! They have had a few terrible seasons and with half of the old team and wally in B.C. there can’t be much good said about their playing. I’m hoping for a good strong year from them.
As for the Oil, the “enemies” of the red, well, surprise surprise, I am cheering for them. Only because they are the last Canadian team left 😉

  28. “Ricky Willams would have fit in better with the B.C Lions.”
Well, we are the pot capital of the country, after all.

  29. “Argos are making a mistake with Ricky Williams”
Actually, it makes me wonder what they are thinking. Kent Austen is an old QB, so his offence is very pass oriented. Now will Pinball force him into a running game just because they now have a “star running back”? It will be interesting to watch that development.
BTW, how did politics and goofy “redneck” comments end up in a CFL thread? (unless the commenters are from Toronto, and then they can be excused 😉

  30. You know it’s summer when you can hear the cry of the wild Roughrider fan “We’re number 8!! We’re number 8!!!”
