Because it takes a pro to write like this;
“It’s fair to say that the city’s political movers and shakers, having turned Toronto upside down in search of a suitable candidate to topple David Miller for the mayoralty in November, didn’t have a brain wave and happen upon Jane Pitfield.”
One of several little treasures at Nancy Fielding’s Neurotica.

But Royson is black and a socialist. Therefore as a writer at the Star, he can be forgiven for his lack of thought and grammar.
The race card trumps EVERYTHING !
Egad. Nancy Fielding might be right, but boy, her blog won’t help her employment prospects.
Royson is the best municipal writer in Canada. Bar none. And about as Socialist as is any Blogging Tory – just a little more correct than partisan. And his writing as a black man is no more partisan than is Irwin Daisy’s as a florist.
Outstanding, well respected and connected reporter, who endorsed John Tory in the last election when his Publisher endorsed David Miller.
And his point: so bang on it’s stupid. Jane has become a consensus candidate because no one else has the stones to take on his blondness.
Very unfair – Royson is the top municipal journalist in Canada. And no more socialist that any Blogging Tory. And no more affected by being black than Irwin is by being a Daisy. And his comment is 100% bang on. Jane is a consensus candidate because no one else has the stones to take Miller on.
And the Nancy Fielding better hope no prospective employers read her blog. No one needs a smart ass rookie.

Meanwhile, I hope than none of Nancy’s prospective employers will visit her blog (and they likely will). Cause nobody likes a knowitall rook.
Sorry, Kate – my first post stalled and I figgered it didnt post.
Royson James is an outstanding city columnist. That’s precisely why I pointed out this error: His editor let him down by letting that lead paragraph slip through.
“And the Nancy Fielding better hope no prospective employers read her blog.”
While my politics are far removed from Nancy’s in most circumstances, I have met her, am friends with her, and hold her in the highest possible regard. Most employers should be thrilled to have someone with her intelligence and work ethic around.
The problem is middle management — Nancy is more than skilled enough to make her immediate boss look bad, and that’s what kills your employment prospects in today’s society.
The blog is the least of her problems.
Nancy Fielding wrote at 2:30 a.m. a few days ago:
“Just as all of that calmed down and I managed to fill my head with pleasant thoughts and felt my body start to relax, the Cat Lady jolted me as she yelled at the top of her lungs out her back door, looking for her favourite feline.
“Help.”
No can do, Nancy. There IS no help for a self-referential writer like you with a style that my daughter, by grade eight, had far surpassed.
It’s your hapless readers who need HELP, with a capital H that stands for Hideous which rhymes with “Give-it-a-miss.”
That’s my plan.
