Paul Jackson on the Ottawa “rat pack”;
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has good reason not to trust the Eastern-based Lib-Left dominated media.
So did Canadian Alliance leader Stockwell Day.
As did Reform party leader Preston Manning.
The Lib-Left media — led by that wholly-owned subsidiary of the federal Liberal party, the CBC, the Toronto (Red) Star, the pompous Globe and Mail and their naive hangers-on and acolytes — did all they could to mock, heap scorn on, ridicule and twist just about everything Manning and Day said.
[…]
While Harper went through a similar meatgrinder during the 2004 campaign — with the Eastern media for the most part dancing to Martin’s slurs — by 2006 our new prime minister had learned a thing or two.
I actually warned Manning, Day and Harper to stay away from the CBC, Star and Globe and every other media outfit of a Lib-Left bent.
In these parts we have a saying for what the media has brought upon themselves – it’s called “pissing in your own bed”. Well, let them soak in it for a while.
Harper may find he has initially been too stringent in ordering his cabinet ministers and MPs to have tight lips — but, let’s be honest here, many are young and inexperienced — and he may have maintained too much bitterness over the treatment of Manning, Day and to an extent his early days as Conservative leader.
What he must do now is cautiously loosen the reins on his ministers after they settle into their roles. Then, just as cautiously, he should build relationships with journalists he can trust.
Read the whole thing – particularly if you’re one of those now cooling their heels while the new government keeps you at arms length. And make no mistake about another thing – if you think the general public shares your self-pity or buys into the shrill ” threat to democracy” hyperbole, think again.
For a better understanding of just how little most care that the rules have changed for the pack on the hill, may I suggest this little exercise – pull up one of those dozens of articles written by jilted scribes chastizing, whining and threatening retribution over the treatment of the fifth estate by the new Harper government.
Now, replace the words “media” or “journalists” with “lawyers”.
The heart bleeds, I tell you.

Good thread, one of the reasons I come here to get the news.
Is steve not talking to you Kate, do you feel jilted?
I am still gigling this morning! Watched some replays of PMSH interview. MAN this Man is just getting down to business and he has said more logical, sound speeches in just a couple short months than JC and PM put together after the last 13 years. Mr. Harper sure does have class, that is one thing that both previous had non of! Did anyone catch Scottie B yesterday after the throne speech? He is just such a annoying whinning little weasle. I hope he does throw’s his hat into the leadership race and the the Lib’s can give him the cold shoulder and maybe he will shrivel up and disappear. Wishful thinking!
‘Never understood the attraction of Scotty Brison–but, then, I’m not gay and I’m a woman.
He’s such a pompous nincompoop, who seems to think he’s above ethical behaviour–either as a backbencher or as a Minister of the Crown (reference: an article on SB from the latest Western Report). Like MaryM, I hope he gets his comeuppance running against his Librano rivals. Maybe he’ll get some of his own medicine back.
The media got the Harper Conservatives elected.
Or did it?
I saw plenty of kid glove treatment of the Liberals during the election. Remember Peter Mansbridge’s pathetic interview with Mr Dithers on the subjict of the negative ads? Martin was tossing fat ones over the plate all night and lying every time he opened his mouth, a real journalist would have had him crying like a baby by the end of the interview.
Remember how the only picture CTV could find of the Iraq hostages was the one on the front page of the G&M with the “HARPER SSM VOTE” right beside it? There are plenty of other examples of going soft on the Libs and trashing the Conservatives.
The new spin is that the media delivered the election to the Conservatives, a nice admission of bias and abuse of privilege, but not nessesarily true. A more correct version might be that the Liberals were so apallingly bad that the MSM were so busy holding there noses and gagging that they couldn’t produce enough bullshit to save the Liberals.
But maybe in these enlightened times we should go easy on the MSM, after all they are just victims.
Victims of their own stupidity, intellectual dishonesty, moral bankruptcy, and lack of profesionalism.
They have failed miserably to act responsibly in their role as journalists in a democratic society and therefore deserve our scorn, not our sympathy or respect.
On the other hand LIberal Asshats believe that the MSM is a tool of the Conservative Right.
Don’t believe me go see myblahg.com home of the insufferable R.McClelland!
UNHINGED…
Enjoyed PMSH’s interview on the National last night. It was refreshing to hear a PM actually answer the questions instead of hearing Martin’s and Chretien’s evasive non answers.
A few examples of the CBC’s anti-conservative tone:
1. The piece comparing the Throne Speech to Reagan style politics and showing a clip of George Bush. This was in reference to the PM inviting a Chinese Canadian and a soldier injured in Afghanistan. Apparently in Canada you are only supposed to invite judges and other dignitaries (I guess a war hero and Chinese Canadian head tax victim don’t qualify).
2. Sorenson carrying around a jar of pennies and asking peolple in a mall what they thought of the GST cut. Although the cut saves the average person $400 a year the jar of pennies seemed designed to mock the cuts. I note that the Liberal tax cuts last year were of a similar amount.
3. Mansbridge asking PM Harper if he thought his stance on terror increased the likelihood of Canada being attacked. The PM put Mansbridge in his place by reminding him that Canada has already been mentioned as one of the targets by terrorists and that putting our head in the sand does not reduce the risk of an attack.
I thought the rest of Mansbridge’s interview was fair.

I notice that whenever the CBC says something nice about Mr. Harper they always end it with a but…. or a ….. however…. then proceed with negatives that essentially negates all the plusses.
while it might seem that the media was negative towards the Liberals during the last election the fact that the Liberals got 103 seats would indicate that they were not very negative at all.
Kate mentioned that journalists have ‘pissed in their own bed’.
Another old saying that might be appropriate for the MSM is:
‘ Know Your Role Or Shut Your Hole ‘.
Funny crackers.

Here’s a good example of bias in today’s Edmonton Journal – Holding on to power is the agenda – Norma Greenaway, Ottawa Citizen; CanWest News Service
Published: Wednesday, April 05, 2006 (http://www.canada.com/edmontonjournal/news/story.html?id=24288607-347e-489c-b71d-06864de28f2a&k=98613)
She says “Make no mistake: Positioning the party to win majority power is the name of the game from now until the writ is dropped for the next federal election. The strategy is vintage Harper.”
Wasn’t that the Liberal m.o.?
The whole thing is full of statements like this; “A big question hanging over the government is whether Harper, a control freak”.
She insinuates that there is more to running the government than it’s 5 priorities and will surely rest on their laurels of their support of the military and how they respond to crises such as tsunamis and mad cow outbreaks. Unbelievable.

Tories to hold free vote on same-sex unions OTTAWA (CP) – The federal Conservatives say they will follow through on a campaign promise to hold a free vote in the House of Commons on same-sex marriage. While the issue was not mentioned in Tuesday’s throne speech, Justice Minister Vic Toews says the vote will be held “sooner rather than later.” The Tory campaign platform says if MPs vote to overturn same-sex marriage, a bill will be introduced to restrict marriage to unions between men and women. A gay rights lobby group is urging the Tories to drop the plan. Canadian.. +

“This Jackson guy sounds jealous that he’s stuck out in the boonies writing for one of the Sun newspapers. Well, that’s almost like being a journalist. Wonder what color crayon he uses when he writes?”
From the article he wrote, it would appear that it would not matter whether he wrote with crayon, pen or poked it with a stick in shifting sand.
It was well written and very much to the point.
There is not one Ottawa journalist worth his/her salt if they are among those who kept quiet these last 13 years when they knew full well the level of outright crime and corruption perpetrated against the Canadian people by the Liberal party.
They have no right to whine at anybody, let alone Stephen Harper, who is proving to be outstanding as our new PM in all respects.
The media show how biased they are and how juvenille their comment and coverage.
Good thing Jackson speaks the same trollish dialect of Harridanese as you do, eh, Kate? Goodness, if you didn’t have these illustrious MSM blowhards from whom derive your signature biliousness, I doubt you’d be able to write anything at all.
Today was priceless. I had my political junkie fix today and watch CPAC. Wow! We have a Leader! Prime Minister Harper was really in control of the show today. At one point during questioning over the Emerson deal the word seduction was used by a member of the Lib party. Mr. Harper was very quick on the draw with that one: “I don’t think anyone in this room that nows me can not accuse me of seduction…not even my wife!…. Then further into his speech from the Liberal side a comment came “show us the money!” Mr. Harper stopped, looked directly at hat the speaker of the house and said ” Mr. Speaker did I just hear a Liberal say show us the money??? We should be asking them to show us where the 14 mil dollars is!!” (or words close to that) It was priceless. Today was the PM’s day in the House.
Ti-Guy: Look what happens when one is typing a comment. The trolls come out!
Is there an MSM journo who could write like this commenter at voy.com re Liberal leadership “race”?
This is a reply to poster “Nola”; somehow, methinks “Nola” is Pierre Bourque himself. +
Commenter: Lawrence
… take a blow to the head?
You are always predictable and dull-witted, but generally coherent. Recent events must be really getting to you.
My leadership run was not due to a lack of candidates, it was due to the fact that all the credible ones were running away like deadbeat dads while all the marginal candidates were mulling their options. And, surprise, surprise, the marginal candidates have now become the front-runners. A spoiled heiress, a Conservative leadership also-ran who discovers his sensitivity (after he loses) and Blackberries his buddies with insider tips, a tourist, a Socialist with a hang-over, a flashing Fiddler, the over-medicated burning crosses lady, and a busload of unknowns and shoulda-stayed-homes.
Woowee, I’m looking forward to this one.
And reality has outstripped satire because even I could not have imagined candidates like Ashley McIssac and Hedy Fry. It’s beyond the wildest dreams of a political watcher. Christ, how much funnier can it get?

As a lawyer, I deeply resent the implicit comparison to journalists in this post.
You’re a lawyer? . . . AND you FREELY ADMIT IT!?
I could go on for hours about what complete toilet-lickers lawyers are but I’m sure you’ve been told several times before.
Really though, who cares what you resent?
As well, just so there’s no lingering doubts in your mind, I will do you the favour of changing the comparison from implicit to direct. Both journalists AND lawyers are scumbags. There, that’s much better.
Aaaahhhh, what are you going to do? Sue me now? Yes, that’s what you low-lifes in the legal community do isn’t it? Instead of being courageous and simply accepting that sometimes life just doesn’t treat you well, you run off blubbering to the courts for compensation for every stubbed toe and unpleasant remark.
Then the wonderful courts, presided over by some pompous, self important, blustering, gas bag who’s spent half his/her life lost in a legal dream-world will rule on your behalf.
Bugger off ambulance chaser. There, I feel much better. Tell me, please, do you resent that too?
My uncle’s a lawyer and a pretty decent guy, and I actually know a couple of others who have done some pro bono work, which was very helpful to a few people we know, so I can’t diss all of them.
But, I sure understand why Kate used the journalist/lawyer analogy yesterday (I see an apology today). I’d like to see a return of “nobless oblige.” If you’ve done well, you have an obligation to society to give back, whether in time, in cash, or in sharing what particular gift has enabled you to get ahead.
That’s one of the things that’s missing these days from our collective living arrangement as “human” beings. We now seem to have the law of the jungle overtaking any sense of being humane to one another: “I’ve made it. I’m rich. I deserve every entitlement coming to me and to Hell with YOU if you haven’t managed to be as clever and successful as me! Oh yeah, and BTW, if I don’t agree with your political or religious viewpoint, well ‘screw YOU.'”
Lovely world we live in.
Have a nice day. 😉
“and I actually know a couple of others who have done some pro bono work” – aww c’mon newkid. SOME po-bono work? Please. I’m sure I could find some drug dealers rapists who contribute to charity too. Does that make them pillars of the community? NO.
This is an interesting forum; everyone trying to diseminate info……….everyone in agreement that the CPC and it’s illustrious leader should shut them down !!
What do you call 70 journalists at the bottom of the ocean? MUCK SHARKS thats what
