Libranos: The Next Generation

Via Adam Daifallah;

Young Liberals have for decades been criticized for engaging in some of the worst dirty tricks when it comes to leadership races. Chief among the complaints has been the creation of phony campus clubs that exist only on paper.
In 2003, more than 150 campus clubs were accredited by the YLC, the vast majority of which sent Martin supporters to the convention. Diamond said the current executive thoroughly reviewed all the clubs and whittled the number of legitimate clubs down to 53.

  1. What is this problem Liberals have with numbers?
They never seem to add up. Except for the well off.
    Now its the Conservatives turn.
    This will be exciting.
Will their numbers help well off families more than the average family(49% earn less than $40,000) Will those in most need get the biggest tax cut?? Will he be my hero or just another in a long line of politicians who serve the top 5% of families first and throw a bone to the rest?

  2. Campus clubs with the same voting and delegate powers as a riding assn. have been the playground of party fixers for decades. The Chretien/Martin regimes were accomplished at using this “spare” support to retain leadership and rubberstamp leader’s office policy planks.
In the CPC’s first party policy convention the membership voted against separate campus party clubs with delegation powers….we urged young people to be active in the party and the ridings and sholder some real responsibility in the party.
Agitating for the campus clubs was Belinda Stronach and her campus followers (who were not delegates but had observer passes paid for them) who proceeded to disrupt policy scrums as if they were registered delegates….pretty much confirms the liberal practice of having a sandbox full of mindless young gophers that the boss can pull out to spoil the membership’s democratic will when needed.

  3. Its comforting to know that young Liberals rising through the ranks are equally as corrupt, unpricipaled and ethically challanged as there party elders. Gotta love the eagerness they show to be used as pawns, that’ll really help with their political aspirations.
Makes you wonder just how effective, in the long run, this reflective period is going to be for the Liberal Party.
If they weren’t so damned good at manipulating the public I’d say this was good, we’ll never have to deal with these bozos again. Unfortunatly way too many Canadians love their Liberals; liers, cheaters, and shysters they be.

  5. A vast network of corruption that can infuse itself with governing Canada takes a lot of training.
Liberal voters don’t want to be humiliated by voting for petty theft and little abuses of power – they want their party to engineer grand schemes of abuse that steal millions of dollars.

  6. If you want to have a “professional” group of liars, cheaters, thieves and crooks, you have to start training them when they’re young so you can have well groomed “apprentice” crooks when they become adults. When they actually enter politics as a “entitlment” job, they become “journeyman” crooks! They’re all trained and ready to fleece you. What’s worse, they’re trained to make you LIKE it and SUPPORT them in their actions! They’re good, these damn LIEberals, but what do you expect with soooooo much training and soooooo many “entitlment” rewards for their efforts??!!!

  7. Its nice to know that the corruption at the top starts at the gras roots with the liberals.

  10. More nonsensical gibberish from SDA. The YLC go out of its way to ensure a fair leadership contest by ensuring that clubs sending delegates are real and you call them “Libranos”. At least the Liberal party allows young people to have a voice which is more than I can say about your favourite gang of reactionaries.

  11. Liberals, Liberanos, Librano$: what’s in a name? (H/T Willy Shakespeare). TDH knows.
    TDH spills his gyhs:+

There was the Young Liberal who wouldn’t even look us in the eyes, largely due to the exposure this website brought to UBC Young Liberal practices and membership restrictions.
There was the Liberal lightning rod for criticism in this province (despite a recent slate of success) who in spite of past differences, continued to show cordial respect, carrying on the friendly communications that have been opened up over the past 6 months.
There was the former ministerial staffer whose icy stare and laboured, silent handshake demonstrated the continuance of a grudge over TDH Strategies exposing his ex-boss’ political leanings long before the neverending headline created a national controversy of democracy.
There was the Liberal power broker whose promise to bury the hatchet (hopefully not in our head) seemed sincere and sensible, particularly with the expectation of working together side by side in the coming months. +

  12. KC – If those campus clubs are legitimate, why don’t you address the fact that the Liberals themselves found that only 53 out of more than 150 are not? Rather than construct an argument, you troll around and call your opponents names. I hope your education will teach you (I presume you’re a student) to do better.
Personally, I’m glad that CPC voted to not recognize delegation authority of campus clubs. For one thing, it’s very elitist. It assumes people attending institutions of higher learning should have special status in a party. Why not church groups? Why not unions? Why not community groups? Why not any other special interest group? There is not a great argument other than it’s fertile ground for recruiting and indoctrination of future party apparatchiks. It might serve the purpose of the party, but it does not serve the larger purpose of democracy.

  13. Typical Liberal. Get ’em early. Start ’em young. They’ll be just as crooked as the last government by the time they graduate.
    So what else is new?

  14. There is obviously some truth to the problem. However, I wonder what you would suggest that the YLC do if a group of students on a campus who have fulfilled every rule apply to be recognized as a club. They might be completely inactive, but how do you judge something like that? Do they have to advertise a meeting at least every other month? Do people have to show up? Who will make sure that they do?
The fact of the matter is that the Young Liberals were much more organized in 2003 because there was a Paul Martin campaign giving them a reason to form clubs wherever they could. The new list was created in September – before anybody suspect a leadership contest. Many formerly active clubs simply died; that does not mean that they were always inactive.

  15. “They might be completely inactive, but how do you judge something like that? Do they have to advertise a meeting at least every other month? Do people have to show up? Who will make sure that they do?”
They have those requirements set down in a constitution that stipulates just those things – number of meetings per year, quorum requirements, etc. Just like every registered non-profit must do under Federal Law.

  16. “I wonder what you would suggest that the YLC do if a group of students on a campus who have fulfilled every rule apply to be recognized as a club.”
You say (or they say): “that’s great, have a fun club.” When they say “Oh, by the way, since we call ourselves the Young whatevers, we deserve a special voice in policy and at Party conventions” you say “Fuck you.”
As was mentioned above, there is no reason for any ‘special status’ affiliate group – if campus Liberals (Tories, Dippers, Greens, Marxists…) want to contribute their time and effort to the politcal process, let ’em join their local DA and have at it.
“At least the Liberal party allows young people to have a voice which is more than I can say about your favourite gang of reactionaries.”
Failure to provide special access and priviliges to a group does not imply ‘muzzling’ that group or ‘denying them a voice.’ On the contrary, it implies treating them like adults. Don’t worry – we can understand Liberals being a little fuzzy on that whole “adult” notion.

  17. …why don’t you address the fact that the Liberals themselves found that only 53 out of more than 150 are not?

ONLY 53 our of 150 are legitimate, operating organizations? That’s a pretty high percentage.
I don’t know how it is in Canada but the American dead have a long history of voting for the Democrat Party — often voting more than once. Perhaps the members of these unfortunate clubs have shed their mortal coils and joined the angels triumphant.

Back to school for Jack Layton
    By TRACEY TONG
    Staff Writer
LYNDHURST — Environment and health issues are the main things concerning young people today, federal New Democratic Party Leader Jack Layton heard during a visit to Sweet’s Corners Elementary School Tuesday morning.
A group of students – some wearing the NDP’s colours of orange and green – gave Layton what school principal Ellen Bater called “a cook’s tour” of the school during his visit, which lasted approximately two hours.
In addition to a question-and-answer session with students from Grades 4 to 8, Layton got to chat with, hear the concerns of, and just hang out with kids from the school.
A music lover and guitar player, Layton spent some time in the school’s music room, where students performed a song about the NDP party they had written for his visit and Layton played a song with the group.
Layton’s visit to the school was a result of a column by Sweet’s Corners parent Amber McCart that appeared in the Kingston Whig-Standard after the federal election earlier this year.
A member of the Whig’s community editorial board, McCart’s column issued a challenge for Layton to visit the school, where her sons Luke and Reese Young are in Grade 3 and kindergarten.
“My understanding was that Jack Layton’s office called the Whig and they put him in touch with (principal) Ellen Bater,” McCart said.
“I just thought there was a lesson for the NDP,” said McCart, who went to the school for Layton’s visit. “That maybe there were things to learn from kids that the NDP could build into their platform.
“People think that rural communities are primarily Conservative,” said McCart. “I don’t think that’s necessarily true.”
In a mock vote held at the school during the election campaign, the NDP finished as runner-up to the Conservative Party. +

  20. The conservatives (as a card carrier) have made a huge mistake not having a Youth Wing.
What’s wrong with getting to the youth early?? They are enthusiastic, and are willing to do grunt work without complaint. Which I can’t say for many of the senior members, preferring to bitch and pontificate on what should be done instead of doing. This is coming from personal experience on both provincial and federal campaigns, fundraisers, events, etc.
Why let the other parties will get to this resource before we can? Why should we let this slip away for this notion of elitism?? Give me a break, there is already elitism in every party, and if you don’t think so you’re kidding yourself, or haven’t actually done any work. With something that is sanctioned by the Party at least it can be controlled, monitored, and mentored.
Why not have an outlet for youth? If as a young person youre sick of the antics of the youth end then you can easily move to the senior side. But if you are unsure and want to gain experience what better place than a youth wing. Experiencing and hanging out with people your own age is a lot less intimidating then jumping into senior politics.
If nothing else it can be a training ground for the future of our party. Give the youth some delegate rights and some influence at the senior level. There is not problem with it; in fact it invigorates the party. Ensure that the clubs/youth organizations are legitimate and they will help they party thrive and survive. Youth wings have been part of partys for decades, in this country and others for a reasonThey work!
