News From France

France-Echos;

After destroying the Buddhas of Afghanistan, burning the Churches of Kosovo, Muslims are now destroying the Christian legacy of France.
[…]
Today (march 22, 2006) we learn that this government has let 1,000 years of cultural and religious legacy to become smoke and ashes.
Barbarians and savages entered in the library of lEcole des Chartes (100,000 books) in the Sorbonne, and destroyed writings of abbeys of le-de-France containing all the official documents since the middle age.

In related news, Tim Blair notes an early start to Car-b-q season this year.
More at WaPo – “Paris Burning, Once Again”;

France is still in the grip of precisely the political mentality that has prevailed here since the Middle Ages. As the protesters themselves cheerfully declare: It’s the street that rules. Today’s mobs, like their predecessors, are notable for their poor grasp of economic principles and their hostility to the free market. Only wardrobe distinguishes these demonstrations from those that led to the invasion of the national convention in 1795, when first the mob protested that commodity prices were too high; when the government responded with price controls, it protested with equal vigor that goods had disappeared and black market prices had risen. Similarly, the students on the streets today espouse economic views entirely unpolluted by reality. If the CPE is enacted, said one young woman, “You’ll get a job knowing that you’ve got to do every single thing they ask you to do because otherwise you may get sacked.”
Imagine that.

  1. This wasn’t covered by any of the MSM that I’m aware of. Presumably, the MSM were busy during this time writing their rationales for their cowardice and hypocrisy in the Danish cartoons matter and assuring us that Islam is a “religion of peace”.

  2. where’s the cheese ??
    where’s the white flags ??
The Gaulic temperment + muslim intolerance = RIOTS!!

  3. Nothing new, the French bureaucracy has a long and dishonourable history of not protecting history.
A couple pf years ago a riot 0ver some idiotic thing in Brittany caused the library of the Duchy of Brittany to go up…priceless manuscripts.
Drives me nuts. Have they not heard of protected archives, fireproof vaults, copies, fire fighters, riot police?

  4. And all the Leftists are rubbing their hands with glee at this, I’m sure.
Christianity is the root of all evil to them, so this acted was deservedly done. France, on the other hand, unlike the US, DID bring it upon themsleves.
    Who’s next?

  5. so, I guess they got even for that Koran in the toilet incident…
that’ll teach ’em? not likely, it’s gonna get much worse.

  6. Islam is like the Borg from Star Trek – you will be assimilated, resistance is futile.

  7. Quick send in the Christian Peacekeepers. Wait a minute, they would accuse the police of aggression and demand that the burners and rioters be left alone.

  8. This is surprising… to who? Maybe the members of the Left Wing Albino Lesbian Pipefitters Union.
What they don’t want to admit is that we’re talking about the same freakazoids who strap explosives to their children and celebrate the subsequent rain of body parts as an act of religious piety.
Wake up and smell the fanatics.

  9. I’m having a hard time believing an incident of this magnitude could happen without anything said in the MSM. Is there a source of this report other than “today we learn that…”?

  10. Not only is it for real, but it’s spread to Canada. Muslim cartoon ‘protests’ in Toronto and Montreal. Leftwing and Muslim ‘peace protests’ last weekend. The leftwing/Muslim coalition is complete. That’s the real axis of evil and the rest of us better wake up.

  11. I’ve been all over the place looking for reference to this France piece.
    No mention anywhere.
So, either this is a complete fabrication, a vast distortion or there is a very large conspiracy to suppress.
Given the number of blogs and independent news caches around the web ..it looks like this story is Tainted ! Unsubstantiated BS….
    Prove me wrong!

  12. France is an even bigger pretend country than Canada is. The Muslims have already won there and in and Spain. Nothing to do now but wait for the exodus of white so-called christians to flood to the despised North America for protection.
I’ll bet nobody was spending much time reading those heritage books anyway. It is usually bullshit and I hear most of it was written in French.
Get used to it y’all. That’s what the Jihad is …. burn and kill everything that is not muslim or if it is muslim of another sect. These shit muslims will eat their own.

  13. “The French education minister, Gilles de Robien, said Saturday that the students had damaged the building and destroyed a number or ‘ancient books’ in its library. He said the occupation of the building was a ‘turning point’ in the governtment’s tolerance of the protests”
    It’s from http://www.sfgate.com
I googled in news, sorbonne library fire
not so difficult… it’s at a New York Times site too… register required.

  14. I am sure I read of this in the National Post (dead tree version…) either yesterday or the day previous. I looked at the e-version, but it isn’t there now. After all, its been 3 days, no use beating the dead horse of dusty burnt books. Its old news in those books, what worth could it be to study history? sarc\

  15. It’ll be a lot easier to deny the historacity of Christianity once all the ancient documents referencing it are destroyed.
Burn baby burn shout the socialist student pawns!
Good ridence say the “intellectual elitists”
destroy the infidels heresy shout the jihadists
such intollerance can no longer be tolerated quip the “progressives”

  16. A previous entry mentioned “Spain” – the proper term for that land is ‘Andalusia’.
There is no history but Mohammed.
    Resistance is futile.

  17. They probably aren’t covering this story because there is more important journalistic stories like Harper’s waistline and Cheney’s hotel requests. With stories like those, why bother?

  18. I believe this story is a canard, or an exaggeration.
For those who read French and are curious, I suggest the following link:
    http://passouline.blog.lemonde.fr/livres/2006/03/des_livres_brls.html
The books were 19th century mass-produced copies of older texts. They were damaged/destroyed in the general mayhem of the occupation of a part of a Parisian university. There is no mention of “religious infidels” being the cause.

  19. The fuss may be a result of a mistranslation. Students protesting a change in the French labour laws seized a Sorbonne building and hurled books from the upper floors at riot police who then fired tear gas to drive the students out. There was no religious connotation to the incident, except socialism of course.

  20. According to the NYT about 200 STUDENTS were in the Sorbonne library and did some damage to the building and destroyed some “ancient texts”. There is no mention of Islam or Muslims or Mohammed or anything Arab or Arabic.
Just run-of-the-mill garden variety students on a rampage. Its been known to happen in many countries of the world, even this one.
Sorry to disappoint all you folks looking for more reasons to hate. Never mind, you know they must have been left wing radical students. So you can still feel morally superior in your Right wingedness. You and G.W.Bush definitely morally superior.

  21. I guess they got even for that Koran in the toilet incident…
Never happened. That’s long been refuted and put to rest. Go Google for yourself.
So, the culprits are either rabid leftist students or rabid Islamic fundamentalists. Or both together. What’s it matter. They both vilify Christianity. How could books be destroyed because of “general mayhem”? They aren’t lying on the floor.
In the not too distant future, if trends continue in France, the Louve and the Notre Dame will be pulverized. Count on it. Their wines aren’t that great anymore. Surrendering their vineyards won’t be the worst thing in the world. If they had a brain they would have opened their immigration to Eastern Europeans who would have supported their wine industry. Too late now.
Amusing, Chirac leaves an EU meeting in a huff because one of the French delegation uses English, the universal language of business, but, shows no indignation to the vile homicidal chants of Muslim rioters in Paris. Preserving perfect French on the road to Arabic speaking dhimmitude is so ironic.
Here’s one American that would be enraged if some numbskull politician in 10 years time wants to rescue France from the ashes again. Never has a Western country been more worthy of their coming fate.

  22. What is this strange feeling? — I’m actually about to say a word in France’s defense. My understanding is that French courts continue to rule against Islamist legal appeals for censorship, and there’s no doubt that their prohibition of veils and such in schools are probably unprecedented in the Western world.
I hope that library rampage story turns out to be an exaggeration or something, because the thought of destruction of ancient texts makes my monkey-brain light up like a Christmas tree — and who needs that?

  23. “…still feel morally superior in your right wingedness.”
    wingyness? Or perhaps wingywingedness?

  24. Oh, and one more thing
this is different from the “supposed looting” of the Baghdad museum by coalition forces exactly how? Is that why the MSM is all over it?

  25. Doug
The coalition forces did not loot the Baghad Museum it was the Iraqis themselves. The coalition forces did however watch them do it.
The coalition troops did remember to guard the Oil Ministry. Not a sheet of paper was taken from that building. But that was probably just a fluke that the one building they guarded was the Oil Ministry. It has to be a fluke right? Because they didn’t have a plan about what to do once they defeated Saddam, did they?

  26. “My understanding is that French courts continue to rule against Islamist legal appeals for censorship”
…….while they’ve self-censored themselves, EBD. Le Monde and Le Figaro never showed the cartoons like the burqa clad quislings at WaPo and the NYT’s.
Here’s a blog site from Paris. OK, he doesn’t like France and lives there, but what’s to like?
    http://no-pasaran.blogspot.com/
France was the main collaborator of Saddam’s nuclear reactor. It’s the leading rogue in the oil-for-food scandal at the UN. It is a country that has no morals when it comes to international diplomacy. Their recent behavior in the Ivory Coast should raise eyebrows. Didn’t Arafat die there? And Miss Piggy, his widow, still resides protected in Paris? They screw the EU at every opportunity.
France is a rotten little arrogant blot in Europe. Know can anyone, except some mindless effete leftist idiot on a campus teaching Derrida and other assorted French bullshit, that likes them?
Oh, and by the way, steve, Bush is morally superior.

  27. Well it seems that the trend continues!
Europe is circling the toiletbowl like a turd about to disappear into the sewer. And turd / toad / trolls continue to ad NOTHING of value wherever they pass.

  28. Penny
Thanks for the tip about Bush. I thought it was a state secret. He certainly thinks he is superior…to your laws. Apparently he writes addendums to legislation he signs into law saying that he will follow the law only if it suits him. So yeah, he sound more than superior, he sounds Imperial.

  29. Doug
Maybe boring and predictable but I do tell truth. Sometimes the truth is boring and predictable. But maybe its the questions I answer that are boring and predictable. It takes at least two to produce the boring and predictable. Can a boring observation produce an exciting response?

  30. Bwhaaaaaa…burn, you frog assholes. You will not protect yourselves, the you deserve this, and for your so-called Euro-wienie culture to disappear. Burn the appeasers.

  31. You’re right, EBD, they do deserve one “maybe they are trying to do the right thing” comment out of a hundred.
Vive La France! Once. (Now, I’m back to being all over the jerks.)

    To whom it may concern:
I am writing this letter to inform you of my reasons for premeditating and attempting to murder citizens and residents of the United States of America on Friday, March 3, 2006 in the city of Chapel Hill, North Carolina by running them over with my automobile and stabbing them with a knife if the opportunities are presented to me by Allah.
I did intend to use a handgun to murder the citizens and residents of Chapel Hill, North Carolina but the process of receiving a permit for a handgun in this city is highly restricted and out of my reach at the present, most likely due to my foreign nationality.
I am a servant of Allah. I am 22 years of age and I was born in Tehran, Iran. My father, mother and older sister immigrated to the United States in 1985 when I was two years of age and Ive lived in the United States ever since. +

  34. Penny my comment regarding the koran in the toilet…
really I have no idea of its truth or not… as I’m not put out by this action.
I think once the msm reports on this sort of thing, regardless of whether it is true or not, it soon finds its way back to the ME, someone there speaks of it as the gosple truth, and inflames more junior jihadist’s, gives them and others reason (or cause) to flame the good work that has been done in Iraq and other areas lately. There isn’t much in the way of Islamic function that I think is worth saving… having spent the afternoon reading in http://www.theamericanthinker.com and its take on the Jihadi terrorists, I think I am on the correct (right!) track.
As an aside to this, Theage.com (Melborrne) has a different take on the ungrateful Canadians freed from Iraq.. very different from CBC, CTV… and it mentions the man that is planning to travel to Iraq for the next intervention…. *don’t send help*

  35. maz2, in the killers letter, In the name of Allah, uff,
“most likely due to my foreign nationality”
The US constitution protects the rights, and gives certain rights, to all people in the USA, including the right to bear arms. This enemy combatant, may not have gotten his handgun, for so many different reasons, lack of drivers licence?, visibly angry when he applied for a gun?, no money?, no background search?, it could have been anything.
any idiot can have a gun… he must have been a special “run of the mill” idiot.

  36. maz2
Imagine quoting me out of context. What a shock.
So desperate to make a point that context is ignored. Tens of thousands of Americans are killed every year by crazy people with guns and automobiles. You have chosen one, who happens to be angry and Muslim. Is the point to prove you are racist or anti-semitic or anti-Islam or anti-young guys, or what?

  37. Kathy Shaidle asked:
    Is this for real?
This is not a question that has concerned Kathy ‘the quote fabricator’ Shaidle before. Ironic, isn’t it?
Oh, and hands up everyone–excepting Steve D–who bothered to spend two or three minutes of googling to see if there was any factual basis to the bigoted post Kate uncritically linked to before joining in the chorus of anti-Islamic bigotry.

  38. Stephen
Thanks, I like your comment and your name!
Yeah, that posting smelled from the first word. You have to check those.

  39. It is hard to overestimate the importance of the School of
Chartres in Western intellectual history, for all that it is
known mainly to scholars. The destruction of those archives is
a body blow to our intellectual tradition. God! Even the Nazis
were somewhat respectful of our common heritage, if not of
    persons.

  40. Like I said, boring and predictable.
The left “feels” that critical thinking means take the opposite side of what your opponents say.
What’s up that name anyway? I suppose all trolls are alike.
    Want proof? Here ya go:

  41. Doug
I think you are the one who “feels” like he has take the contrary view. My view was backed up by a NYT article so I “feel” my view is more true than your “feeling” that is based on your “feeling” and nothing else.
