Liberalism Is Depressing

George Will in WaPo;

A survey by the Pew Research Center shows that conservatives are happier than liberals — in all income groups. While 34 percent of all Americans call themselves “very happy,” only 28 percent of liberal Democrats (and 31 percent of moderate or conservative Democrats) do, compared with 47 percent of conservative Republicans. This finding is niftily self-reinforcing: It depresses liberals.

The cure? Fast cars.

  1. Of course liberals are depressed. Everything is broke and needs fixing.
A Conservative figures if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Build something new.

  2. Gee Kate,
Putting a depressed person in a environment destroying vehicle would only give them guilty pleasure. If it went fast and a bridge abutment was added to the mix, you’re looking at a family tragedy.

  3. Given that modern liberalism is utopian in core construct and centered on creating political monopolies to acheive it, no doubt they’re unhappy. Liberal utopia is so elusive….if it cannot be acheived on this level of existance pehaps liberals will reach their sought-after utopia in the next level of consciousness…..to aid in this, I offer a fast motorcycle and gallons free wine to any Liberal wanting to take the final step to reaching utopia. 😉
To aid socialists in becoming happy, I offer the reinstatement of the old soviet “happiness act” which was rigerously enforced by 20th century socialist rulers….unhappiness is outlawed and anyone caught being unhappy with the prevailing conditions of the socialist utopian state will be hung by the neck until they cheer up!

  4. I think that the basic difference can be found in one of the most famous lines given in any speech by a politician:
“…ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”
Even though, John F kennrdy was a democrat, he sums up the basic differences between liberalism and conservatism.
Liberalism says “What can the state do for me?”
Conservatism says “What can I do for my state or country”. By extension the question is asked “What can I do for myself”. … for my own state of well being, to provide for the needs of myself and my family.
It is no wonder that Conservatives would be happier at the end of the day because there is basic satisfaction in accomplishment. I am happy and satisfied if I have worked with my hands to produce something that has some worth and value to it.
Liberal (and NDP) philosophy says that I am entitled to all that the state owes me (my entitlements). Where is the satisfaction in waiting for the next handout or in lobbying for a new one. There is no self worth in receiving handouts…one doesn’t have to look any farther than the Indian reserves to see this in pratical application. The history of government support and handouts has left the First Nations peoples feeling worthless. As a result there has been many social problems; alcoholism, drug addiction, family problems etc. These problems are not unique to natives but are prevalent where you have populations that are receiving with little expectation to contribute back. The inner cities populations often fall into this same rut.
Give a man a fish and he’ll be hungry again tomorrow, teach a man to fish and he’ll never hunger again. Conservatism at its core wants to see each person able to pull their own weight and to do what you can for yourself. In so doing you will live a happier life.
It is still a great speach read in its entirity:

  5. I think you are right, however (a generalization) it has been my observation that most fast cars are driven by people who lean to the right and those who lean a lot to the left drive older, smaller, cars, overdue on service, that have a lot of stickers about peace, environment, and Bush is the antichrist, etc.
They are oft times bewildered as the world passes them by and I think they are resentful that the commies did not blow us up, as predicted during the cold war. These poor souls live with unfulfilled prophecies and the only cure is a sleek fast twin turbo and a curving road.
The soulution, start a foundation today to cure this malady in our lifetimes.

  6. You’re right, Daniel. The sad part is the left can’t see past their emotional responses to everything. During the recent election, I had a spirited discussion with a guy who normally votes Fiberal who decided he would punish the Fibs for stepping over the line by voting NDP.
When I started talking about concepts which he obviously wasn’t familiar with (ie: honour, integrity, self-determination) he said the basic human condition was fundamentally flawed and we’re all corrupt to some degree. He was determined to get the most he could from the gov’t. and since Conservatives were determined to cut social spending, he would never vote for them. His vision of the future was depressing.
The only positive from this encounter is that his wife (who is friends with my wife) saw the light and told my wife that she was voting right.

  7. Gob & Mop is depressed. Their view of reality consists of:
    Globe & Mail, aka MSM;
    the public sector, aka socialist tyranny;
    the private sector, aka the profiteers/pirates;
    Alberta.
G&M defines the surplus as “surplus”. The insinuation is that the government created the surplus as if it were dollars manufactured by a money-machine deep in the cellar/basement of the Alberta legislature building.
The so-called surplus has been lifted by government greed out of the pockets of investors. Once the government has salted the billions away the money becomes a surplus. Great shell/con games by monster governments. +
Gas price pushes Alberta’s surplus to $10-billion
    PATRICK BRETHOUR
CALGARY — Alberta’s surplus is set to surge past $10-billion as high energy prices, and the private sector’s unprecedented scramble to buy exploration rights, push the province into uncharted fiscal territory. +

  8. platty said: “If a Liberal ever is feeling unhappy, I’m sure they would simply lie to themselves that they were in fact Happy”
If a liberal is feeling happy he just robbed someone who isn’t aware of it yet. 😉

  9. The cure, fast cars and hairpin turns. There is no fun with most socialists, they remind me of the old USSR politburo watching the May Day Parade. They are going to save the world and make it a better place when in fact they are nothing more than a collective heap of teat suckers from first breath to death relying on mother government or mother union.

  10. Now, Now…
Don’t forget, for all that a Conservative squirrel plans for enough food for winter, and despite all the liberal Lemmings that fuck each other all summer, only to end up jumping off a cliff come fall… there’s still a few of those Lemmings standing to the side telling the rest “you first”.
Their not all dummy’s, nor are they all depressed… lest we forget and become complacent.

  11. Uhh one question/clarification on your summations here Kate: If the 4th estate installed themselves as the official opposition in a Tory majority what where they in the Liberal majority?….defacto government?

  12. Daniel (my brother)
    Thanks man!
“Give a man a fish and he’ll be hungry again tomorrow, teach a man to fish and he’ll never hunger again. Conservatism at its core wants to see each person able to pull their own weight and to do what you can for yourself. In so doing you will live a happier life.”
Thus my name, with a nod to the great Red Fisher.

  13. richfisher,
Us “fishers” have to stick together. I was musing about making ice fishing an Olympic event. They seem to be short on winter sports and hey it is something anyone can do and enjoy. Afterwards you get to go home and enjoy the warmth of your stove as you cook up your medals! Mmmmm. You are correct we fishers are “rich”.
    Daniel

  14. Daniel,
“Give a man a fish and he’ll be hungry again tomorrow, teach a man to fish and he’ll never hunger again.”
I have only one quibble with that.
Not if the fish stocks are “managed” by the Ottawa based, Ministry of Fisheries

  15. Like they say there’s lies, damn lies and statistics. The people who put out the study have themselves admitted that the biggest difference seems to be the fact that American conservatives tend to live in the sunbelt which is a big predictor of happiness.

  16. In my own personal experience liberals (and most Canadians are very liberal) are often grandious, paranoid AND delusional.

I also know a few who had to get counseling for depression after Pres. Bush won his second term.

Liberals are often very rude as well.

I have one NDP cohort who cannot restrain herself from blaming the Pope (I am Catholic) for aids in Africa and another socialist family member who brings up liberal politics like Gitmo at family dinners.

  17. Liberals seem to be happy when they are expending great time, effort and capitol on totally useless causes.
Therefore may I suggest that for the next 4 years they dedicate themselves to the developement of the Kyoto friendly non CO2 emitting Olympic flame.
Maurice Strong and Allan Rock can spearhead the project, now that Mr.Rock has joined the ranks of the unemployed.
Also, I suggest the motto “If it saves one CO2 its worth it”

  18. richfisher: I wud prefer it if you dropped the CBC PC-speak, and adopted a more manly handle, like richfisherperson, er, “richfisherman”

  19. Michael Moore, funny, yes, really …
Before I really knew who he was, heard a quite hilarious Michael Moore takedown of liberals, as whiny and decisive. He compared two fathers about to take their kids out for a treat. The liberal father couldn’t figure where to go and when he did, couldn’t find his keys etc etc etc, whereas the conservative father said spiritedly, “kids get in the car, we’re going to Sizzlers for dinner”. Or something like that. Anybody hear that routine? Broke me up at the time.

  20. no bozos allowed “Liberals are often very rude as well.”
It’s all the satanic and stalinist programming. Your manners are the first thing to go.

  21. Ugh! Kemo Sabay!
Liberalism is depressing; liberalism says, Hello, Dhalla; Ruby is her name; strange name for an Indian. Run, Ruby, run. Watch that post. Which tribe she from/come? Librano$? +
India Times: Canada Moving Closer to Electing an Indian PM
Even as America debates on electing its first woman President, Canada may be moving a step closer to a PM of Indian origin, whos also a woman. Newly re-elected Canadian Liberal member of Parliament Ruby Dhalla, from Brampton-Springdale in Ottawa, is planning to run for the post of Opposition leader in Canada. +

  22. Depressed? If I were a Liberal I’d be too busy covering up all the crimes that occurred in government over the past 12 years to notice.

  23. Davis Inlet: Liberal/socialist utopia. All new housing provided by the state. All new schools and public buildings courtesy of the state. Gobs of welfare. No responsibilities. All the sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll your heart desires, (legally or illegally, but who cares since criminal activity is let off with a slap on the wrist). It’s the nanny state gone wild! So why the high suicide rate? I know — George Bush and capitalist exploitation.

  24. Did you? I honestly can’t remember. I thought I got it from Instapundit, actually.
I get so many email tips a day, often multiples of the same item, and sometimes duplicates of what I’ve found elsewhere.
I don’t generally hat tip email tips unless I use an emailer’s direct quote. Especially since most come to me with an assumed name, or just a nick.
But if credit is what you want, then thanks!

  25. maz2:…interesting post…Brampton lies just south of me…a mosaic of liberal vote mining…remember Tahiti and it not-so-long-ago political turmoil…???

Didn’t realize at the time of choosing it, that my name was PC.
    RELEASE THE LUNKERS !

  27. George Will doesn’t know what liberalism is, otherwise we would use the term “liberal democrat” (which is an oxymoron).
I suspect he actually equals collectivism/socialism with liberalism!
(While, of course, liberalism is the absolute opposite of collectivism/socialism.)
The headline should probably more accurately read “Collectivism is depressing”.
