A particularly good one from Steyn;

So anyway David Gregory’s going bananas and yelling “I will yell!” and “Don’t be a jerk!” at the White House press secretary, and there’s more smoke coming out of his ears than from Ronald McDonald in Lahore, and I’m thinking, you know, maybe Karl’s latest range of Rovebots that he planted in American media corporations are just a wee bit too parodically self-absorbed to be plausible. And then this lady pipes up and asks, “Would this be much more serious if the man had died?”
Well, maybe. And maybe it would be even ever so much more serious still if, after peppering him with birdshot, Cheney had dragged him into a safe house in the Sunni Triangle and decapitated him with a rusty scimitar while shouting “Allahu Ahkbar!” and then sold the video to al-Jazeera.

On a slightly more serious and related note, Flemming Rose,(culture editor of Jyllands-Posten) on why he published the cartoons;

As a former correspondent in the Soviet Union, I am sensitive about calls for censorship on the grounds of insult. This is a popular trick of totalitarian movements: Label any critique or call for debate as an insult and punish the offenders. That is what happened to human rights activists and writers such as Andrei Sakharov, Vladimir Bukovsky, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Natan Sharansky, Boris Pasternak. The regime accused them of anti-Soviet propaganda, just as some Muslims are labeling 12 cartoons in a Danish newspaper anti-Islamic.
The lesson from the Cold War is: If you give in to totalitarian impulses once, new demands follow. The West prevailed in the Cold War because we stood by our fundamental values and did not appease totalitarian tyrants.

Not to be dissuaded from the now familiar pattern of tying their professional credibility to a non-story and riding it into the quicksand, the media heads into week two of “Cheney’s-got-a-gun”. As the new round of magazine covers and feature articles roll out, one wonders Just what a “sinister fascist who really runs the Whitehouse” has to do these days to collect on some of that appeasement normally due a hard working totalitarian – convert to Islam?

  3. I despise Cheney personaly but I agree the hunting fracas is silly. The left hates Cheney possibly more than the right hated Clinton and unfortunately partisans will snap at anything that tastes remotely of chum.

  4. I found it absolutely hilarious that he old geezer who was the shooting victim actually APOLOGIZED to Cheney and his family for all the trouble his getting shot caused them. There must be some way that all this can be blamed on the left, not?

  5. The code of honor, or friendship, that exists among those men are obviously confusing for the Leftistas. The apology is something I can see coming from men like my father, had one of his friends accidentally wounded him, or vice versa.
    If it would have been a couple of socialists the probablity that the race for the best lawyer was on would be much higher. Perhaps they’d just blame it on those damned American gun manufacturers.

    Hmmm…thinking of Cheney in a turban and robe…trade in the shotgun for a Simitar…running through the Dems side of the House yelling “God is great” and “off with their heads” like the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland. Methinks at times the Whitehouse may not be too different from Wonderland.

    The code says…shoot your friend in the face and then send him to the hospital while you go have a cocktail?
    Besides that was a canned bwana hunt. I’ve hunted all my life and real hunters don’t call that bs hunting. No honour in a stocked, staged hunt.

  9. I’m not commenting on the hunt itself, I have no information whether it was, or was not, a “stocked, staged hunt.” If it was I’d agree with you that there’s no honor in that.
    I’m also not big on any hunting that isn’t primarily intended to harvest the meat, or control pests & predators.

    This one, though, makes me ill – as it portends things to come. I’m very sorry Mr. Selbekk was forced to bow under pressure.

    We see video on CNN showing rampaging Muslims around the world. In Europe, the Middle East, the Pacific Rim … Muslim Mobs spreading mayhem.��It seems that these mighty mad Muslims are rioting and firing their ever-present AK-47s into the air because of cartoons.� This latest epidemic of Muslim outrage comes to us because some newspapers in Norway and Denmark published some cartoons depicting Mohammed.
    Muslim outrage huh. OK … let’s do a little historical review.
    Just some lowlights:
    [1] Muslims fly commercial airliners into buildings in New York City. No Muslim outrage.
    [2] Muslim officials block the exit where school girls are trying to escape a burning building because their faces were exposed. No Muslim outrage. *******************************************
    [3] Muslims cut off the heads of three teenaged girls on their way to school in Indonesia. A Christian school. No Muslim outrage.
    [4] Muslims murder teachers trying to teach Muslim children in Iraq. No Muslim outrage.
    [5] Muslims murder over 80 tourists with car bombs outside cafes and hotels in Egypt. No Muslim outrage.
    [6] A Muslim attacks a missionary children’s school in India. Kills six. No Muslim outrage.****************************************
    [7] Muslims slaughter hundreds of children and teachers in Beslan, Russia. Muslims shoot children in the back. No Muslim outrage.

    [16] Newspapers in Denmark and Norway publish cartoons depicting Mohammed. Muslims are outraged.

    Is this really about cartoons?
    They’re rampaging and burning flags.
    They’re looking for non-Muslims to kidnap. They’re threatening innkeepers and generally raising holy Muslim hell not because of any outrage over a cartoon.
    They’re outraged because it is part of the Islamic jihadist culture to be outraged. You don’t really need a
    reason. You just need an excuse. Wandering around, destroying property, murdering children, firing guns into the air and feigning outrage over the slightest perceived insult is to a jihadist what tailgating is to a Steeler’s fan.
    I know and understand that these bloodthirsty murderers do not represent the majority of the world’s Muslims.
    When, though, does the majority become outraged? When do they take to the streets to
    express their outrage at the radicals who are making their religion the object of worldwide hatred and ridicule?
    Islamic writer Salman Rushdie wrote of these silent Muslims in a New York Times article three years ago.
    “As their ancient, deeply civilized culture of love, art and philosophical reflection is hijacked by paranoiacs, racists, liars, male supremacists, tyrants, fanatics and violence junkies, why is the majority not screaming?”
    Indeed. Why not?

    In support of your comments, add genocidal persecution of tens of thousands of Christians in Sudan and the very recent attacks involving a dozen Nigerian churches (some where people where burned inside the church). No muslim outrage with those either. Just murderous muslim hate. Chalk-up more accomplishments in the name of the “Religion of Peace”.

  19. Right you are Martin. A partial list it certainly is. One has to consider the overload effect.
    The 218 plus Liberal scams list was overload for *Rigid Liberals*. People will accept the short list but not the fairly complete list as truth.
    Including the atrocities of those cremated in Nigerian churches, all the 10 year old boys waving thir hands and laughing with beautiful smiles while incenerated bodies hang from the bridge above them, the little 6 year old girl with the gaping 4 inch hole in her forhead, the white severd head of a red bearded american on the asphalt and his body laying several feet further back would stretch the boundries of truth for many readers.
    I wish I had not seen the dead 6 year old girl photograph. The image will not go away. TG

  20. Have to agree Tony, that’s a sight no should have to see! A very, very unpleasant reminder of what atrocities humans are capable of.
    I can never forget the photo of the two lovers attempting to escape the conflict in Sarajevo, she Muslim, he Serbian, that were gunned down by a sniper.

As an upland hunter and 28ga shotgun owner of many years, I think Cheney’s account of the shooting was fabricated…his pal was NOT shgot at 30 yards as Cheny contends to recieve the severity abd size of would he sustained. Then having the police investigation stalled 18 hrs by the secret service while he hid out in the ranch house just stinks of Ted Kennedy hit an run “accident”….forensics could easily prove his buddy was shot a lot closer than Cheney contends (giving rise to probable grounds for criminal neglegence charges)….but of course the Liberal MSM with their partisan blinders on full stop get in a flap over fly specs and miss the real story as they go on beating beating their own political drum.
    Not a doubt in my mind Cheney is :
    A) Lying
    B) a slob hunter
    C) Probably a drunken slob hunter
    D) Feels he’s above the law (obstructing a police investigation, hunting without manadtory permits)
    The real fun in watching this story grow is not just partisan liberals predictably ripping into Cheny for all the wrong reasons, but blinded partisan republicans reflexively appologising for Cheney without looking closely at the facts and downplaying his obvious neglect and ruling class immunity.
    As a conservative and hunter I know I’d never hunt with this slob any more than I’d vote for him…and I think the way he weaseled out of the mandatory police investigation (breath sample included) that you or I would have to submit to in the same cercumstances, by pulling executive rank …just plain reeks of petty elitism. The Guy is a craven political class brat in my books.

  24. Kevin, it wasn’t a canned hunt, this time. The article I re-read referred to a 2003 hunt, where he and others killed at least 417 pen-raised pheasants.

    That is a problem. There’s an excellent lefty documentary on the war on terror that is both non partisan and sharp as heck called The Power of Nightmares. I think about five people saw it. Instead we get a big spotlight on Michael Moore throwing rotten tomatoes and a terrific oppurtunity gets flushed down the crapper.
    And most media is, despite its pretensions, a show business that assumes people simply want affirmations of what they already believe.
    Don’t get too excited, that goes for Fox News too.

    I still don’t care. I don’t demand saintly virtue or polish from political leaders. I hope for good leadership and am thankful as heck when its there. Who would you want at the helm during the Battle of Britain: foul mouthed drunk Churchill or Teflon Blair?
    And I’ve already got a lot of perfectly good reasons to dislike Cheney. If he wants to pump his base full of lead so be it.

    I haven’t hunted pheasant in over 10 years, and when I last did it was in Alberta. At that time F&G released pen raised pheasants in several grazing reserves throughout the province during various days in the hunting season.
    Getting these guys was a lot more difficult than shooting a chicken in a barnyard. Basically, if you didn’t have a good dog you had no chance of bagging one.

    The left is all about emotional blind “feelings” of illogical personal hatred and love.
    On the other hand the right does’nt think Clinton’s social and economic game plan was good for the US. or larger western civilization.
    These are the basic premises that will for ever divide the illogical hypersensitive left’s core and right wing conservatives.
    The left has to cast off the loons who bring their hate filled spewing and mirror reflection misconceptions to all discusions, or suffer further irrelavance.
    The lefts exposed vacuous social and economic ideals are so meritless that Cheney’s hunting accident and the “Chimpy Mc BushHitler” stories highlight the superficial ad-hominem attack in what is clearly degrading into a cult of personality, for the left.

  30. I contacted Peter MacKay’s office today because I wanted to talk to someone about publishing the cartoons and MacKays admonishment of the Weekly Standard which had outraged me. If we all stood together, we would be much safer. It was, to say the least, highly unsatisfactory. Sounds like the world is going to hell in a handbasket and they are as he put it ‘off at meetings busy putting a government together’. Here’s the whole ugly story starting with a link from lgf:

    have ya ever got 40 quail in one day? ever shot at one covey and had a second covey 100 yards away not also fly or run away? cheney is a busy man, can’t wait for a real hunt. what kind of man shoots over 400 pheasents in one day?
