Buried deep in this Globe And Mail article, this startling admission;
Roughly 70 per cent of [221] journalists who responded to the survey also said they had seen the images.
Arguably, the biggest international story of the new year – one in which there was considerable Canadian coverage and controversy – and nearly one in three professional journalists surveyed admit they had not yet seen the Jyllands-Posten cartoons.
How can this be?

fred…
excellent post. i wonder if the MSM would have the guts, any of them, to publish it.
I haven’t seen them, nor do I want to.
Playing the virtucrat(my position is correct because I’m invoking moral authority) won’t get you respect.
You are really an uncurious person. A person that I hope never serves on a jury. Your mind is nailed shut.
Should we presume also that you, as virtuous as you are, have never glanced at porn, told an off-color joke, gossiped, watched a film/play that was offensive to anyone, fudged on your taxes, or had a parking ticket?
Jack sez: “went out and got some Rosenborg DANISH blue cheese
YUM YUM it was good”
LMAO!! I read ya…how to foam out some intolerant Jew hating, Dane murdering fanatic…and have a tastey snack to boot 😉
May I suggest you put that Danish Blue on a gourmet Matzo and wash it down with a kosher Golan Sauvignon blanc.
Ya got me thinking…I’m off to grab a six of Tuborg and some blintzes 😉
ah c’mon “leftdog”, you can do it… take a run at it and make the effort! show ’em what you’re make of.
show us those sharp teeth.
Hypocrits! Get you free Islamic depictions of the prophet! Face uncovered! herehttp://www.zombietime.com/mohammed_image_archive/islamic_mo_full/
The editors and decision makers in the Canadian MSM are scared shitless, and are going out of their way to appease Moslem fundamentalist radical beheaders. Hey, “quiet diplomacy” is the Candian way.
What was the name of the man held in Saudi Arabia that was tortured for something like 2 years? well thank God for Canada’s quiet diplomacy….
even Amnesty International recognizes that to sit and wait quietly for change… doesn’t work.
In fact, their latest fund raising effort is “Make Some Noise”
Thought so leftdog. I’m not asking for a discourse with you, simply to have you tell us how you think things should be done differently.
USA out of Irag. Check. Then what? Please lay it out for us if we are so wrong.
Will Islam destroy Israel, and if so, is that OK with you?
Fairly simple questions I should think.
Can we fill the gap?
Danish shipping companies now often take down the Danish flag when docking in ports in Muslim countries, where they generate five percent of their revenues, or about seven billion kroner.
Turkey has cancelled a major insulin contract. I guess granny is expendible.
Maybe it’s time for Muslims to be self-sufficent and develope and use their own indigenous medications, software, appliances, cars, electronics, iron ore, lumber.
Ooops. I forget. They’ve got no legal patents on anything useful.
If the cartoon captions were in Arabic I would not have understood them. Are the people of the ME so well educated that they all read Danish. How would the only funny one have been translated if it were a line of women bombers?
I think what is scary is that who ever is doing it seems to be able to turn out mobs on demand. Or is that just the way the media covers it? I fear that these people are so brain-washed that their religious can get any results they want with little or no effort.
Dithers learned how to dither from his friends in the MSM. Fence sitters is what MSM are – they are completly useless people because they don’t report or think, they are fully occupied trying to balance themselves on the fence. I think PMSH is proving how valueless MSM opinions really are – no one believes anything they say or write because they have proven to be so UN (in) credable. IMO the reason they MSM will not publish these Cartoons is simple – they were ordered not to – nothing to do with morals or freedom of speech. The MSM do as they are told and they like being told what to do; they do not take risks those boys and girls are sitting on a nice comfy fur and the fence they are sitting on is barbed wire. They just won’t go there.
Is that the same survey the Globe reported on indicating that 7 out of every 10 Canadian journalists think that the cartoons should be published? So much for liberal bias as a rationale for not publishing.
And as far as not seeing the publications, most journalists are in fact not writing for the general news/political news sections of newspapers. While you and I may think everyone should be informed about international issues, I can understand a Toronto Sun fashion critic or food critic not caring to seek out the cartoons. 30% haven’t seen it? That’s wholly unsurprising.

I guess it is similar to your linking to PDF articles whilst previously admitting you couldn’t actually view them as you have no PDF reader software.
I guess their “agenda” didn’t deem it necessary to bother looking them up.Truth and accuracy have both fallen to the wayside with the MSM…SAD…SAD…SAD

Do the left a favour and learn some rational discourse yourself. Do you want to refute the right’s arguments or simply make faces?
jypsy ontario “Only 17% feel they should not be published out of respect for the Muslims. Where I stand you must earn respect and they haven’t”
You’re confusing employees with management. Newspapers and TV Networks are in the business of selling advertising to as many people as possible. They are not journalistic wikis and never have been.
They’re not long for this world though so don’t bother getting yourself in a twist over it. All the top journalistic talent is going to be jumping ship and setting up shop in blogs/podcasts/videopodcasts over the next 3-7 years.
penny “For starters, journalism is a useless degree, in my opinion. The best in the business never had one. A degree won’t buy you integrity or talent.”

Most journalism is simply writing. And writing is one of those rare subjects that needs to be self taught if you’re to be anything other than a hack.

Thanks a lot greg. Some of us were expecting porn. I’m seriously put off now.

Thanks, Jose. Add integrity, I mean these journalism morons today can’t even use the wealth of information on Google as a resource which you and I take for granted. Couple that with no writing talent and it’s pathetic.
Journalism degrees are a sham – a vehicle for the most mediocre to find employement in that guild.
We disagree politically often, but I consider you a friend. That’s how it should be in a free society where a marketplace of ideas should rule.

Aw shucks, that’s kind of sweet in a chummy, Sun-tzu sort of way.

Any thoughts on this statement? http://www.jihadwatch.org/dhimmiwatch/archives/010278.php
I watched the statement on CPAC and was screaming at my TV for some reporter to ask how the Muslim community in Canada would have responded if more than a few “minor players” had published the cartoons.
Publishers and editors made this call. Chilling. Do they think western people cannot digest innocuous cartoons that are offensive enough for some of “them” to claim “caused” embassy burings, stonings, and rioting by the ever important “muslim street”? Not “newsworth”, I guess.
Free press? Free to whom? The writers that didn’t dare write? The editors that dare edit? The publishers that didn’t dare publish? The readers that didn’t dare read? We all will pay a price.
BTW, congrats to Canada on the womens hockey gold medal.
My motives aren’t an “art of war” ploy, Jose. It’s a dialogue.
You are ascribing motives to me that don’t exist.
Your opinions count because you have them made based on integrity.
And writing is one of those rare subjects that needs to be self taught if you’re to be anything other than a hack.
One of the best was Edna Buchanan at the Miami Herald. She worked in a button factory and moved south with her mother. No experience in journalism. She pestered the editor with “why not” hire me messages. He capitulated figuring she’d be gone in a week. She eventually won the Pulitzer prize for crime writing. Her book “The Corpse Had A familiar Face” is a classic.
I agree with you that selling advertising is the MSM’s real agenda. Face it, the NYT’s would be a small elitist rag in Manhatten if Gucci, Tiffany, and Pravda ads dried up.
Sorry Jose, it’s just that I’ve seen so much of this so called religion of peace in the last few years, that I’m numb to it all now, not blind mind you, just numb. I keep wondering when the western peoples will finally tell these hypocrites to get their house in order, before trying to tear down ours. Muslims seem to riot at the slightest provocation. It’s not surprising really when you consider than many in the muslim world cannot read or write. Their Imans and dictorial leaders use this ignorance to incite hatred of the west for one purpose only. Control. It’s hard to control an educated person and I have noticed that most moderate muslims are very well educated. I’m beginning to wonder if perhaps we are too lenient in our immigration policies. Perhaps it’s time for a change. Denmark has changed it’s policy. Europe is beginning to wake up to the threat of radical Islam, but here in Canada we have too many apologists for murderers. I always used to wonder why we let the Idi Amin’s and Pol Pot’s of the world get away with it. Now I know. Lack of spine.
Does this response from the media really shock anyone??? This is exactly what happened before WW2. Everyon lives with their head in the sand, deny, ,deny, deny. This morning over at Angry’s site they were discussing much of the same subject. One interesting post defined Gihad & Fatwa. Go to Steve L’s post. Copy, paste, it send it. To everyone that you know. Until we wake up our friends and send this information on, all we are doing is preaching to ourselves. I was simply amazed at the quick responses and may I ad shocked responses. I have had questions asked Where did you find this? We can no longer rely on our media to info the public. I can say that after today there are a few hundred more people aware of this serious problem that is facing the world. (It helps when you get on to someone with a large email list.) This was the best that I could come up with today.
Fred: you post was amazing!
Kate: Simply awsome discussion today.

Penny “My motives aren’t an “art of war” ploy, Jose. It’s a dialogue.”
Sorry for the misunderstanding. My statement was purely a good natured joke.
MaryM-
I wouldn’t put much stock in Churchill and Islam. This is the man who drew borders in the Middle East in such a way as to maximize internal conflicts in the countries involved. In war he was a great leader but in peacetime he was a train wreck.
Greg “. Control. It’s hard to control an educated person and I have noticed that most moderate muslims are very well educated. I’m beginning to wonder if perhaps we are too lenient in our immigration policies”
It’s naive to assume that they entire world be homogenous in its cultural development. Sixty years ago westerns were killing each other in the tens of millions and stuffing each other in gas chambers. Even the Taliban couldn’t top that.
Whenever we make social progress we assume that filters out to everyone in the world within a few decades. Why should it?
Take Iran for instance. As of 1986 they still had 1.8 million nomadic people. And by nomadic I don’t mean bikers.
Don’t cut off immigration. Muslims come here to the UK, get modern and rich and eventually go home wealthy and liberalized. In the meantime they sell us excellent curries (Have you ever tried living off Fish n Chips? It’s not pretty). It’s a win-win situation.
Greg “I always used to wonder why we let the Idi Amin’s and Pol Pot’s of the world get away with it.”
China and Russia’s vetoes don’t help.
I’m soooo glad people seem to finally realize it is the power of hatred that is fuelling these radicals. Whether or not someone publishes a cartoon will NOT change the fact that just by being non-muslims we are marked for death. All the goodwill and polite gestures in the world will not change this.
hey Leftdog
who do you think the islamofascists would come for first, because of your ideaology that is ananthema to their doctrine?
And who do you suppose it would be that would come to your rescue when you were in danger of losing that pretty little head of yours….?
“All the goodwill and polite gestures in the world will not change this.”
How right. They have been on the path for decades … it’s nave to believe that they are going to stop over minor concessions … but every concession is a nail in the coffin.
I wonder how history will write up this period and the turning points that were available, but unused. Our children’s children, looking at the polls that will be available for this period in time, will have to be wondering “what were they thinking?”.
That Compas poll is interesting. It says that reporters who think the media should have carried the cartoons believe — “notice”, in my view — that “fear was the motivator”, whereas those who supported non-publication were more inclined to believe that “respect” was the main reason.
Has anyone else noticed in blog comments and so on that those who cite “respect” as grounds for non-publication tend to support publication of far more offensive material when it pertains to Americans, Christians, conservatives, etc.?
That particular inconsistency not the only eeliness on the non-pub side. “A sizeable minority of journalists volunteered to Compas that they believed that the major media did not carry the cartoons because the cartoons were of poor quality”.
Um, I think that’s called “lying”, but even that doesn’t cover how disgusting it is. There’s an eeliness to it at a mortal level. And it’s got “entitlement” and “denial” and “good Canadian” smeared all over it.
The Liberals sure left us a lot of “Liberal-values” words to hide behind.
Jose I agree we shouldn’t cut off immigration completely. But I do think we need to be a little more selective in our approach to it. It’s good to take in the poor and those fleeing oppression, but we take in too many criminals and a pass for one shouldn’t mean a pass for the whole family. Dad, mom, granddad, grandma, my third cousin on my great uncles side, etc etc. Often with little or no education. Too many economic refugees while the real refugees rot in stinking camps waiting for their chance for a better life. People who get off airplanes with no documentation. Speak the magic words, a cursory three hour interview, usually conducted by a foreign born Canadian, instruct them on how to collect their welfare check, then a date with a refugee board, six months down the road, if they bother to show that is. Sometimes we get lucky and we get good, honest, people, but really is it all that wise to let a person with no documentation walk around with no oversight? As for Russia and China, sorry, I forgot about the useless nations. More people have died under their watch, than were killed in the two world wars and yes, we were very good at killing each other, but we are getting better at not killing, thanks to education and reasonable discourse, such as we are having right now. I may be wrong about many things but at least I am not worried that you might kill me because we disagree. And who knows, we both may learn new things and change our minds on some, without letting go of our morality or our principles.
EBD,
On the personal side I don’t believe in offending people just because I can. But this is not a personal issue.
Reasons like fear, respect and poor quality should have no meaning as far as the MSM is concerned … obligation is the word that I prefer. An unfulfilled obligation in this case.
Meanwhile I despair of the violence this charade of cartoons which distracts from the real insult to god.
” Meanwhile Shops, secular and Koranic schools were closed and public transport disrupted as fighting raged. Hospital sources said many of the dead and wounded were civilians hit by stray bullets. They included women and children wounded by mortar and artillery fire.” http://somalinet.com/news/world/Somalia/1857
All these cartoons but one are directed at Muhammed, thats like Tom, Dick or Harry or in Quebec Joseph. These people are revolting, they have nothing better to do than revolt. They cannot be helped ie; Iraq, so like a wild fire all we can do is contain them till they burn themselves out. Any that jump the perimiter must be stamped out ruthlesly.
Don’t cut off immigration. Muslims come here to the UK, get modern and rich and eventually go home wealthy and liberalized.
Are you sure about the liberalized part?
I’m skeptical because many of the 9/11 terrorists were upper middle class, spent time in Europe and walked among us. OBL isn’t a camel herder either. The bastard is educated.
The Saudi royals and upper classes aren’t peasants either. And what do we get from them but Whabbism financed and exported in the extreme.
Hey, it’s not that bad, Jose, if you use lot of salt and malt vinegar on those fish and chips.
If there had been a poll taken, the lazy buggars would have been all over it.
Penny “I’m skeptical because many of the 9/11 terrorists were upper middle class, spent time in Europe and walked among us. OBL isn’t a camel herder either. The bastard is educated.”
That’s why he’s a terrorist. The philosophies behind Egyptian Islamic Jihad and Al Qaeda are the inventions of thoroughly 20th century intellectuals. It’s *not* based on an ancient religon. What is it that Europe first went through in the 20th century. Radical Modern Ideologies. Well geuss what- It’s Islam’s turn to learn what we already found out the hard way.
If you want a good analogy of Al Qaeda don’t think of the crusades, that’s rubbish. Think of the Spanish Anarchist movement of the 1930s.
http://www.writing.upenn.edu/~afilreis/88/spain-overview.html
It’s worth noting that the Spanish Anarchists didn’t gain any real traction until Franco launched his coup. The Spanish Civil War fueled their growth and metastized throughout the world. In pursuit of a modern ideal they progressed to terrorism and barbarism. This sound like anyone you know?
Its horrifying but its worth noting that they’re learning much faster than we did how much of a bad idea these kinds of movements are.
We’ve already reached this point in Egypt where modern radical Islam began. Egyptian Islamic Jihad (Arguably the beginning of it all) is still trucking but it is now a husk of its former self because of a loss of support within the Egyptian population.
Keep her steady and in another 20 years the old timers in Tehran will start complaining about how Political Correctness is taking over and Al Qaeda’s devolution into petty criminals.
EBD “Has anyone else noticed in blog comments and so on that those who cite “respect” as grounds for non-publication tend to support publication of far more offensive material when it pertains to Americans, Christians, conservatives, etc.?”
Here’s my personal view on the subject. This doesn’t just pertain to me, it holds true for lots of us secular/lefty types:
As an ex Catholic I feel much more free and easier sticking it to Catholicism than I would any other religon. Heck I love to give the Catholic church stick and why not? I served my time as an altar boy (with my anal virginity intact thank god). I was brought up to believe something which I now feel is a crock of poo. That gives me the right to pay that poo out.
Now I see Islam as poo as well albiet in a less familiar form. I won’t step on it as hard but I won’t be taking orders from it either thank you very much.
Penny “Hey, it’s not that bad, Jose, if you use lot of salt and malt vinegar on those fish and chips.”
No thanks, I’d rather dodge shrapnel.
Fred paints an accurate picture of where things stand now. Then he ends with…..
*But they will go too far. Hitler did in Poland.
The truly unfortunate aspect now is that the “too far” step they will take will likely involve nuclear weapons and then the real blood letting will begin.*
Posted by Fred at February 20, 2006 03:07 PM
So now, what is the next step?
Do we dither as Chamberlain did with Hitler and reap a nuclear harvest?
Shoot me down if this makes no sense, but I think we are approaching a tipping point and we can not afford to stumble.
The time has come to move in more troops to provide security to those peace seeking Muslims who have purple fingers and thumbs, risking their lives for peace and decent government.
The time has come to pull all stops. Time for all peace loving democracies to pull together and deflate this growing bomb.
If we are considering the question,
* Is it better ethics to give Iran 5 days warning to move women and children out of the country fist?*,
then in my humble opinion, we have missed our opportunity to turn things around. TG
