I’ve used the term “journalistic malpractice” on occasion to describe the type of superficial and politically tainted media coverage Canadians have been subjected to. There is no better example of this than recent smears against Stockwell Day.
This is the same press that has been covering Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew. You’d think that the irony might have smacked them upside the head by now.
Whether he becomes Canada’s foreign minister is up to Stephen Harper. But whether he deserves respect for his efforts and degree of knowledge in the field is not a call we should allow the Peter Mansbridge’s of the world to make for us.
China E-Lobby argues the case well;
Mr. Harper and his fellow Conservatives should not merely given Mr. Day the portfolio simply because a bunch of Americans and Chinese exiles want it. Mr. Day should receive the post because he is the most qualified person for the job, and not only because he has served so well as Foreign Affairs critic for nearly four years.
Canada has always prided itself, and not without reason, as the conscience of the free world. In recent years, as Jean Chretien and Paul Martin repeatedly embarrassed themselves (to say nothing of their fellow Canadians) in their dealings with Communist China, that role has been lost. Stockwell Day’s appointment, all by itself, would put the tyrannies of the world on notice that Canada’s new government will no longer look the other way on human rights and security threats to the democratic world. Days’ appointment would bring immense hope not only to the long-suffering Chinese people, but also to many others who suffer under tyranny in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and even parts of Europe.
I understand that the “politically safe” move would be to appoint someone else to the Foreign Ministry, but that is due to how (some) Canadians see Mr. Day, not how we see him from outside Canada. The Foreign Minister represents Canada to the globe, and the globe knows – and admires – Stockwell Day a great deal.
And to that I’ll add – I think Canadians can also rest assured that Day wouldn’t be splitting his time between his office, a Paris apartment and Bruno the Bodyguard..

Harper could put Guergis in FA for a couple of years
Ha ha ha ha ha !!! A former beauty queen contestant who never finished college at Foreign Affairs….
You guys are hilarious … absolutely hilarious!
Well, Belinda may not be a beauty queen but she never finished college & had two portfolios.
Were you laughing uncontrollably at that appointment?
yes
Hans Island proved how Stockwell Day can handle a situation which required tact.
Most people never paid much attention to the issue.
Day, since his son was banned from Parliament Hill has been far more focused.

Stock? He has done a great job in the portfolio, and he deserves it, but I don’t think he should get the nod on this one. The sad reality is most of this country thinks he’s just another nutter, I think giving him a different high profile cabinet post would be a better idea. It IS politically difficult to make him the Foreign Minister, and we do have a minority Parliament, and these guys need to be thinking politics all the time if this is to be the launching pad to a new Conservative revolution in Canada. That doesn’t mean compromising all your principals, but it means when possible, take the least politically resistive path, and in this case, do NOT make an appointment that will be a lightning rod for controversy.

“and the globe knows – and admires – Stockwell Day a great deal”
What globe would that be? The flat one with the unicorns?
As another wise man once said, bring it on! There’s been a distinct lack of humour in Canadian politics since the Rhinos were forced out of the elections. It’s just what we need.
And to answer the title of the post “Is There A More Ridiculous Choice Than Stockwell Day?”
Probably not, but I’d like to see what that fat guy with the cowboy hat can do before making the final call.
Didn’t Stockwell Day give up his bid for the leadership of the party when it was announced in the papers that he is an American Citizen? Is he an American Citizen, or was that just another slander set up by the msm?
Compared to the FORMER PM and his guitar thing over the weekend, Mr. Day looked positively regal in the ‘suit’, a couple of years ago.
Regarding the BC Liberals not being aligned with the CROOKS (Libs) (sorry, must have slipped the clutch), in Ottawa, tell Christy Clark. She was on with Mike Duffy a couple of times and she sure sounded Liberal to me.
Perhaps she didn’t get the memo.

Thats a lot of digital space wasted over a “what if” !
Who cares what CBC dipshits say?
It won’t take any act of parliament to cut their budget and / or put someone with a brain in charge there! I’m looking for a job like that! ”
New broom sweeps clean!” That would be my MO/Tagline and the first order of buisness.

Did the msm announce that laughing-Stock was an American citizen or is that just another slander from Dave?
I don’t think that Day would be a lightening rod for controversy. I believe that he has matured greatly since his time as leader of the CA (and that wasn’t so good). The new focused Day would do a good job in that portfolio and be able to shut the MSM up once and for all about the scary so-cons that want to push their agenda by just doing his job. The only agenda most christians would like to see pushed is honesty and integrity.
Meany,
The reality is most MPs are complete unknowns to most Canadians.
Quick, who is this?

“The only agenda most christians would like to see pushed is honesty and integrity.”
Oh, please. What do you take us for, Stewart? And the irony is that you are talking about “honesty” in that statement.

Sigh, TB, I wouldn’t speak so haughtily if I were you.
It’s not like the Liberals were all that good. Far from it. They were an unmitigated disaster. Just ’cause the MSM didn’t say so doesn’t mean it ain’t so.
Plenty of opinion in this thread. I’ve learned to stand back and think for myself rather than believe the automatic negative bafflegab coming from the left. Once upon a time I believed the MSM somehow had to be telling the truth, as I did the courts, but eventually a pattern became apparent as to their bias and dishonesty.
There’s going to be plenty of leftist verbal diarrhea against the new government, most of it undeserved. Already they’re sniping and the transition hasn’t even taken place!
I wish the damn left would get a life. Not going to happen, unfortunately. They can’t stand being out of power and being unable to force their radical social agenda on an unwilling population.
I would recommend to the left to prepare for a very long stint in the wilderness, so get a life already, all you leftists. MOVE ON!
Hey Lenny: If Stock gets Foreign Affairs, do you think he could tell us- how much of the annual million dollars in operating costs of our embassy at the Holy See, is for rent? (And did Alphonso Gagliano make a courtesy call at the embassy when he went to Italy to formally announce a piece of our new currenty? Did Sophia Loren actually turn down an offer of ten thousand bucks to appear in that photo-op? (And was Gina Lollobridgia paid the ten thousand bucks to appear instead?)
When you consider how many millions are called foreign aid, which are ploughed into paying for meetings to push Canada’s UN agenda of gun control, many Canadians would cringe.
Canada’s Auditor General needs to start a full audit of the past twelve years of foreign aid.
Canadians are compassionate people. But I would surmise a great amount of what is called foreign aid has gone to pay for expensive conferences, where like minded souls are flown to New York and other venues like Geneva to stay in expensive hotels, and dine at expensive restaurants to discuss taking away guns from citizens.
Canada and Norway just paid the shot for just such a meeting for Nigeria.
Will it help the people of Nigeria?
Doubtful.
Will it help friends of the government in government paid for NGOs?
Yes.
Perhaps that is why many in the left leaning main-stream media don’t want their friends, or in some cases former professors found out?

Sentinel: first of all, thank you for the surprisingly civil tone in your response.
Second, where was I “haughty”. I responded to someone saying that “the only thing Christians would like to see pushed is honesty and integrity” when many/most of them got in to politics because of social issues like equal marriage. I’m not on some ruse about hidden agenda here because I’m not talking about what Harper will or won’t do. I’m just saying that the primary reason for a lot of the fundamentalist Christians even getting involved in politics has little to do with simple honesty and integrity.
Finally, are you serious:
“There’s going to be plenty of leftist verbal diarrhea against the new government, most of it undeserved. Already they’re sniping and the transition hasn’t even taken place!
I wish the damn left would get a life. Not going to happen, unfortunately. They can’t stand being out of power and being unable to force their radical social agenda on an unwilling population.

Didn’t you get very tired of hearing those exact words thrown at you over the last decade? Most Canadians did not vote for a small “c” conservative platform or a big “c” Conservative platform. Not by a long shot. I think the far left has certainly started some critique but they are entitled to it. I think Liberals, to the dismay and surprise of Conservatives, have been very quick to turn around and start talking, very optimistically I might add, about the great opportunity to re-build and rejuvenate. I haven’t seen a whole (there is certainly some) of negativity being thrown at the Cons by Liberals.

Yeah, that had no bearing on the decision at all. lol
As a former diplomat for 30 years, I think Stockwell Day would make a very capable foreign minister. He is certainly as capable as Don Jamieson or Andre Ouelett or other past lumineries.
Stockwell Day is uneducated as well as intellectually challenged. Mr. Harper has far better candidates for that job
