And Paul Martin’s very, very clear position on future Supreme Court decisions.

Ah, Kate… Hit the mark again!
Good article. Has anyone asked why CBC has not updated the poll tracker since the tories took the lead? I believe 3 polls have come out since their last post.
Peter Pansbridge has been too busy interviewing the boss PMPM in the liberal seeded office. PMPM was so relaxed last night they must have allowed for retakes. He got to go over pretty much every question and response that he muffed in the debate. clearly and fundamentally
Martin is a constitutional/Charter dyslexic that has obviously been informed on the subject by soviet dogmatists.
Watch the code words in Martin’s talking points.
So far I have heard him refer to state recognition of an individual’s right to own his property as deadly to “progressive legislating”.
Removing Parliament’s supremacy and mandate to carry out the public will by gutting NWSC was neccessary to “socialislly progressive court decisions”
So far I take it that “progressive” = “administrative autocracy”
Sounds pretty soviet to me….where did Dithers get those “values” he says are “Canadian”?
The rats are jumping ship before the real estate market dives! Liberal cabinet ministers. Selling thier houses. In Ottawa. Yeterday. I am not making this up.
Kate cuts through B.S. like a hot knife through butter.
When PMPM clearly , clearly separated himself from the Cretian Liberals. the obvious question to anyone other than the fellow that gave the 2 minute speech of cheer was to ask—Are any of the “Cretian Liberals going to jail?”
If the audience wasnt as seeded as a Liberal Ad.
we would have seen a breakout of all out JC/PM war

Kate I especially liked the word:
“nobody” instead of “no one”
Masterfully done. Just think of how the New Testament would read if King Herod I had gotten the kind of softball press that King Herod II got from Peter Mansbridge.
Exactly right. Martin is rabble-rousing, using the only tactic the Liberals use – which is inciting emotional reactions. In the case of Harper, he’s trying to incite irrational fear.
The question is – if you reduce your government to a one-authority system, IF, this one-authority is appointed by the PM and unvetted, then – doesn’t this authoritative system (in this case, the Supreme Court) become an unregulated and all-powerful extension of the PM?
And IF this one authority is not merely an unvetted body appointed by one individual (we are getting into a ME style dictatorship), then, what are the reference points for this body?
The Canadian Charter is ambiguous and sloppy. IF also, that unvetted body sees itself as activist rather than conservative (as defining new rules rather than analyzing new rules to see if they abide by the constitution..then, what Martin is setting up is a dictatorship via his own office.
The electorate would, in this situation, have completely lost control of the gov’t.
As Kate points out – what if this unelected body, appointed by the PM, unvetted and unaccountable, activist rather than analytic…sets up a new law that rejects abortion? Or one that rejects the right of women to vote? etc etc?
Under Martin’s plan – the electorate would have no means of rebutting this small, unelected PowerCorp.
Martin’s thoughts on the SCC are very dangerous, to give the SCC the supreme power to override the laws of the land!. This is what Canada fought against, are we on the verge of a society where freedom of speech will not count, sounds like that with his recent speeches?
I never watch CBC but channel flipping last night I came across PMPM with Mansbridge. I spent maybe 2 minutes watching (all I could stomach)and saw Mansbridge leading questions that the PM could Martinize squeeky-gooy clean answers to.
It is disgusting how the CBC can survive in these times of instant information. Wait, I just had a thought, maybe the CBC will be a direct beneficiary, if the CPC win, and be FIRST to be retired to the Dumpster marked Liberal.
Steven Harper has made it very very clear that he would not involk the NWC regarding a womans right to choose, or SSM.
Yet Paul Martin continues to play this card, and in some cases it is working.
Having a heated discussion with a friend of mine, who was planning to vote Conservative, she is now afraid.
Even after explaining to her that she is buying into Martin’s fearmongering, that there is no risk of Harper stripping a womans right to choose, she still wasn’t convinced.
Her reply, ” Politicians up for election always say one thing and then turn around and do another, he could be lying”
Ahhhhhh ….sort of like the Liberals have done all along eh.
I give up! Some people just can’t hear the truth, through their feeble minded fear.
We must of watched different versions of the same broadcast….now I’m no friend of the CBC but I did see Mansbridge hold Dither’s feet to the fire over the attack ads and he badgered him about pimping fear instead of policy until we got a typical Dither’s answer…yes; he both approved the ads and ordered them pulled so he wasn’t being contradictory at all….Mansbridge offered the camera a knowing smile when he heard this.
Personally I think the liberal knives are out for Dithers.
Pimping Fear?
I like it – Pimp My Riding.
Someone do a parody, please.
I read Kates round table item, but I heard Paul Martin go much further in his rant on the not with standing clause.
He stated that no govenrment he presided over would ever allow the will of the majority to distate to the will of the minority.
I elaborate on this at Duke’s place.
This man has done a 180 on the meaning of democracy. I think he is insane and I am not kidding. http://dukemcgoo.blogspot.com
The Martin liberals are promoting
……HATE……against anyone who believes in conservatism.!
Isn’t there a law against that..?
I’m afraid you guys are losing me in here – are you saying that there actually exists in Canada a fundamental right to choose abortion for women? I admit I’m feeling a visceral reaction as I think this, and don’t want to miss the main point of the whole argument, coloured by my reaction.
Plato, I’m afraid I’m not catching your meaning on the difference between nobody and no one. Please explain.
Shane, after the Supremes struck down an existing law on abortion a few years ago, no government has ever drafted something new to replace it. So there are no laws governing abortion at all.
Therefore, it is entirely possible that a future law might meet the test of the court and be upheld.
For reasons I cannot explain, all media and politicians have a habit of assuming they know what future courts will decide – even decades down the road.
It doesn’t speak well for their ability to recognize, much less weigh alternative outcomes.
Thanks, Kate. I’m glad I asked, as I am aware of the history, and lament that it’s often misrepresented. I greatly appreciate your response. Keep up the great work. Martin’s comments/justifications for his on-the-fly policy announcements don’t reveal a lot of forethought.
I think Martin has suffered a psychotic break.
I hope the conservatives come out and pound the Libs with a bunch of over the top positive ads.
Rocks, you’re about the fifth different person I’ve seen speculate about his mental stability in the last 24 hours.
mentally unstable or hitting the bottle???
I think he is slurring , either that or he has a “for profit” dentist and his teeth arent fitting.
I thought the whole forum was loaded with Liberals from the commercials.no one gave him a real gobsmack kind of question and there are lots to be asked. did Pravda prescreen them or allow retakes.
Are Harper and Smiling Jack getting the same treatment?
I was very disappointed in that, erm, townhall meeting. Not one of the questions addressed the space weapons ban. What does it take to get the Canadian electorate engaged in the issues?
