“Loud Silence” At The New York Times

Someone is being stonewalled over questions about why there was a one year delay in the New York Times publication of the National Security Agency eavesdropping story by James Risen and Eric Lichtblau.

I e-mailed a list of 28 questions to Bill Keller, the executive editor, on Dec. 19, three days after the article appeared. He promptly declined to respond to them. I then sent the same questions to Arthur Sulzberger Jr., the publisher, who also declined to respond. They held out no hope for a fuller explanation in the future.

The impact of a new book about intelligence by Mr. Risen on the timing of the article is difficult to gauge. The book, “State of War: The Secret History of the CIA and the Bush Administration,” was not mentioned in the Dec. 16 article. Mr. Keller asserted in the shorter of his two statements that the article wasn’t timed to the forthcoming book, and that “its origins and publication are completely independent of Jim’s book.”

That “someone” is none other than the NYT Public Editor, Byron Calame.

  1. It’s pretty sad when a big piece of the story is trying to get it published, and finding out why it was held for “a year” (without specifying dates). This will be interesting to follow.

  2. There are many people in the US, American citizens at that, that hate their own country. Many prominent people come to mind that shall go nameless. We all know who they are.
I wish Bush would wake up and declare war on International terrorism and the states that sponsor it. Just get on with it for Christ’s sake. Then they could righty call some of these people by their right name, traitors.
It never ceases to amaze me how many Canadians also hate America. Ask them why and words like Iraq and oil pop out of their mouths. At that point you know they have never taken the time to investigate the situation themselves. All that’s needed to make these people “experts” in world matters it seems is to watch two or three news hours a week. Oh, yes, and read the New York Times every once in awhile.

  3. Let us call them what they are: treasonous bastards. Lincoln would never have put up with this bullshit.

  4. OT,
But the Libs are throwing the RCMP to the wolves.
On question period their tack is that the RCMP are essentially the lackey’s of the NDP – the charges are baseless, the RCMP knows it, but because the NDP asked for an investigation they knowingly proceed with basesless charges.
What’s the big deal, so they toss a sociatal pillers (capital markets and now the RCMP)on the fire to keep the Liberals toasty warm in their position of power.
It appears there’s no institution the Libs won’t threaten if it means grasping onto their “right” to govern.

It is time for this blogs third annual review of the performance of the Los Angeles Times, which long-time Patterico readers know as the Los Angeles Dog Trainer. The first annual review was posted here. The second annual review was posted in two parts, here and here, and resulted in one of the proudest moments I have had as a blogger: being featured in a Day by Day cartoon.>>

  6. Say what you want about Republicans, but when it comes to spectacular scandals, nobody beats them (ref: Seinfeld, “The Wiz”).
Abramoff could snare 20+ House/Senate members, mostly Republicans, plus untold number of staffers.
Plame Affair: The VP’s Chief of Staff is gone. Rove might follow.
Now, the Spying-without-FISA story could be just the topper. In addition, there is that whole WMDs-not-found thingie …
The Democrats are such a pathetic bunch of wimps. All they could muster was some oral office briefings and de-briefings involving the President and an intern. Morons!!

  7. Abramoff – don’t know much about this one.
Plame Affair – A farce if there ever was one. The one who should be charged is Plame’s husband for his outright lies!
Spying-without-FISA – Presidential Powers cover this one nicely if you would just look it up.

Also Billy Boy Clintoon did that and much more when he was in office.
The Democrats are such a pathetic bunch of wimps. All they could muster was some oral office briefings and de-briefings involving the President and an intern – Hello!!! – where have you been Rip? Do a bit of research on the Clintoon years and you will find a steady diet of scandals and coverups for 8 years! (even dead people)

  8. Slim,
Drunks and women drowners, (Ted Kennedy), fellons (Clinton), liars (Clinton, Kerry), thieves (Clinton) are adored by the US left.
Pathetic is not the word, more like pathological.

  9. The SPITTLE that passes for discourse here! …by those too ignorant to be ashamed!

  10. John Crittenden,
I and many other Canadians are starting to hate Canada, but the opposite reasons that Americans are hating their country.
Where they have right leaning leadership, we are saddled with Socialist bigots.

    Beat it!”
LOL! This was hilarious, Duke; I mean it! (Unintentionally, of course, like all your humour.)
You want me to “Beat it” so that you and your buddies can continue to circle-jerk in the dark, Duke?
    Not a chance!
Somebody needs to shine a light in here occasionally if only to keep you from doing even stranger things together.
    LOL
