  1. Apparently, last election (or was it the 2000 election?) he sent out a flyer in his riding talking about “Indian crime” and was investigated and acquitted for a possible hate crime.

  2. He was booted out of the conservative party (for various reasons).
After that, he got into a legal battle with a former StarPhoenix reporter. Their mediation is still ongoing, I believe. At one of their mediation appointments Pankiw got extremely aggitated and threatened bodily harm. The police were called to calm the situation.
After word of the incident was reported in the media, Pankiw phoned the SP and went on a drunken rant filled with swear words. The reporter repeatedly asked for permission to use the quotes and later printed the rant verbatim.
Speaking as someone who lives in Pankiw’s former riding, the constituents of Battlefords-Lloydminster have my sincere condolences.
I used to live in the riding and from what I can tell Gerry is well liked and respected. I’m not sure, given Pankiw’s controversial (some would say disrespectful and stupid) outbursts, I doubt many would be swayed to vote for him instead of Ritz.
    I could be wrong.
    Man, I hope not…

  3. I know nothing about the controversial part, but I do recall that he’s the one that asked for the unanimous consent of the House to revoke the standing order allowing the Liberals to invoke cloture (no Libs were in the House) back around ’98 or ’99. ‘Twas a neat stunt.

  4. I hate to say it but it could go either way–although Gerry IS well liked, Pankiw could play the “we are all equal” card and get votes from those in and around the Battlefords-LLoyd area who are frustrated with First Nations, for whatever reasons they deem valid. If any of you know the region , you know of what I speak. There is, and has been for umpteen years, that underlying current of racial tension. Some constituents might find Pankiw as someone who is simply fighting the push to be politically correct and others may see him in quite a different light.

  5. I live in the Battleford/Lloydminister riding and would be EXTREMELY surprised if Pankiw got very many votes. Ritz is still a sure thing in my opinion.

  6. Eric, you wrote he’s the one that asked for the unanimous consent of the House to revoke the standing order . When something like that happens in the House, it is inevitably orchestrated by house rule wonks behind the scenes and they just pick an MP to go through the motions. I cannot imagine Pankiw thought that one up himself.

  7. While Battlefords-Lloyd is one of the ridings in which Pankiw could actually win if he were up against, say, a chair and no one else, Gerry Ritz is too well respected an MP to be defeated by this yutz.
Especially considering he has no campaign apparatus at his disposal in this constituency, unlike in Sasaktoon-Humboldt during the 2004 election when he was narrowly defeated by Brad Trost. If he couldn’t win there, he can’t win anywhere.

  8. I suffered through this guys reign in Saskatoon. Even I got to the point where I would have roughed him up in a bar if I saw him. The best slogan I saw out there on a sign was….
    No Pankiw, thank you.

  9. Ritz is my MP—-before him it was Len Taylor(NDP) then Hermonson—before that McKnight—Ritz worked for 8 years or so as Hermansons assistant—he was superb—as a MP he is very well thought of—eg Goodale in Regina has more of a personal following than any benefit from his ticket—-Ritz has both a party and a personality—he could probably not win as an Independant but would do better than most anyone—Pankiw is unknown by most in this seat—he will not split the right wing vote
