Buckhead, What Hast Thou Wrought?

Just in time for the Canadian political silly season, this article in eMarketer on the ever expanding numbers of Americans who are turning to the internet for political news. Among the findings – 52% of respondants said they went online to get “a lot” or “some” information on the last US presidential campaign;

In 2005, 39.8% of Internet users agreed that going online can give people more political power, up from 27.3% in the previous study. In addition, 61.7% of respondents, Internet users and non-users alike, say that going online has become important to political campaigns.
“Print and television forever changed politics with enormous impact on all elements of the political process – yet these media never made voters feel politically empowered,” said Mr. Cole.
“Until now, the Internet didn’t empower voters either,” he explained. “But with the expansion of information online about issues and candidates during the 2004 elections, and an increase in voters accessing this information, [we] found significant growth in the number of people who feel politically empowered by going online.”

Therein lies the key. It’s not so much the blinding speed at which the internet functions (though that’s certainly a factor) as it is a sense that the average citizen can not just have their opinions heard, but can circumvent the media filter to bring information to a broad audience with the potential of earning national exposure – and producing significant political repurcussions* in the process.
The media seems to be accepting and adapting to these new realities of an empowered news consumer, albeit slowly. That’s a good thing. It’s not the job of citizens to do the media’s grunt work for them – but when they do, simple professional ethics demand credit be given where it is due, even when the “citizen” is known as “Little Green Footballs” or simply “Buckhead”.
The once common (and often blatantly dishonest) practice of citing or quoting a blog without identifying it or the author by name seems to be less prevalent – more importantly, online versions of the mainstream media seem to be relaxing propietary attitudes towards news “ownership” and providing direct links to outside sources.
The message is slowly sinking in that readers are increasingly fed up with politicized “gotcha” journalism, and no longer satisfied with the “I read it and this is what it says” approach to reporting. They want links – and then they want the ability to respond.
And look at the rate of expansion;

According to data gathered earlier this year by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, 75 million US adults got political news and information online in 2004. The majority sought political news. Pew found that 63 million people turned to the Internet for political news and information in 2004, up from 34.5 million in 2000 and just 7 million in 1996.

Sweet dreams, circulation managers.

  1. Hey Kate,
In your webcam picture of Saskatoon, is that the Pravda logo in the bottom right corner.
I know they are desperate for attention, but did CBC put up the webcam as a public service ??

  2. I thought I had that commented out. Obviously, something went wrong when I updated the mainpage template today — expect the CBC webcam to go poof!

The arrogance of Trudeau: “Zap, you’re frozen”.

  4. God, I love the Internet. What a gift.
I can see a big turn in the MSM as well, both below the border and in Canada. I think this is because they realize that their market share is shrinking and they better start showing both sides of an issue rather than the single liberal side that they have stressed in the past.
A good example of this is Chris Wallace. He was quoted as saying his father “has lost it” after his most recent outburst against GW. Last year that would probably have been ignored completely.
The tide will soon turn into a tsunami I think.

  5. A recent issue of Maclean’s featured a lengthy feature which slammed global warming and David Suzuki. Apparently a future issue will feature similar critiques of Stephen Lewis. I had to stop and take a second look at the cover to see whether I was actually reading Maclean’s. Sure enough, it was indeed Maclean’s.
Conservatives are a group that the MSM has been able to take for granted for all too many years. It could push out whatever left-wing pap it felt like, and conservatives had no choice but to eat it. It could hire bumbling morons as “conservative” commentators and claim that this constituted “balance”. That is now changing thanks to the internet, and I am quite certain that subscription numbers are showing it.
Conservatives no longer need the MainStream Media, but believe me, they need us. Their financial survival depends on it. Although they’ve got a long way to go towards balanced reporting, I detect a willingness to be just slightly more accomodating. Conservatives were always able to withdraw the sanction of the victim from leftists, but the internet has given us the ability to actually make that withdrawl hurt.

  6. It seems that half of the political news stories from the media are based on polls and the other half on anonymous inside strategists. Other than the Liberals, who needs that?
With blogs and eMarketing, why buy newspapers or online news services? Smart advertisers are realizing the shift.

  7. I only use the internet and have done so since
9/11 when I discovered the bias on every televison news, including, in a big way our own
    CBC.
The truth is on the net, and once you find the
right websites, like this one, you can never go
back to the other news systems. Never.
I think they have the power to change how news
is presented and the CBC better wise up as they
are the loser in the end if they do not change
    their positions.
    Yea, Blogs!

  8. Blogs give all people a chance to speak – a chance to call MSM on the carpet for their biased reporting AND non reporting. They will never regain the ground they have lost and they should be shaking in their boots because the interaction on blogs like this make people feel involved. Involvement makes people think critically. Woe to the Liberanos!! My 84 year old Mom gets all her information from the internet and she forwards her information to her friends – she calls it Grey Power. She also passes around her issues of Western Standard. Grey Power people vote.

  9. Ya that is wonderful news…more people opening their eyes and breaking out of the contrived reality spun for them by a coopted corporate media… but also a trumpet of doom.
You just gotta know that when the political elite and the mainstream disinformation industry realize that the net’s impact has broken their monopoly on propaganda, and is actually exposing their sleaze, they’re gonna come after it with the bloodied eye and fang of an enraged monster.
I suspect at the point where the alternative media of the internet becomes relevant in informing (or more accurately, deprogramming) the general population, big brother will stomp on it with all the gracefulness of a frenzied leviathan.
We note that the electronic frontier organization has identified as much as 5% (and growing)of new reactive news blogs and opinion web sites are what they refer to as “flogs” or sites run by government or special political interests to spread disinformation and discredit effective bloggers and news sites.
If they will go this far( along with reading our e-mail and CDPD messaging), the beast is worried and fearful. A freightened leviathan is a public danger. I predict sweeping internet controls driven by government intimidation of domestic ISPs and browser developers. Within a few years there will be no anonymity or ability to block official spyware on the standard internet and the commercial equipment in circulation and we will start to see arrests and prosecutions of “illegal” authoring.
Then again this may not even merit a blink in Kanadar where most state-tranquilized droids are unaware of their right to free speech and who continue to soften their brains with the contrived pablum from CBC.
