Last night on The World Tonight I said something about journalistic malpractice, and the lack of competition in media. I should have added that there is a nearly total absence of self criticism. A story like this should be among the top items nationally for “rival” news organizations, because it undermines the integrity of the industry, not to mention the legitimacy of the democratic process.
As I said, Greg asks good questions. Just don’t hold your breath waiting for these people to provide answers.

In the days before a Canadian federal election campaign, we’re already starting to see signs of bias from the CBC.

Certainly not for the Conservatives.
I cannot imagine the CBC putting a “Promising poll” title on a news story suggesting a Conservative majority.
This is editorialized news folks, from our state-run broadcaster.
Pair this with the effect of leading and influencing polls on the electorate.

What about Peter Kent? What about Garth Turner? I’m not certain about Turner, but Kent hasn’t distanced himself from his day job. And how many other media people are there that are now running as Conservative candidates? Or does it just not count when conservatives do it?

How does the guy dating effect the election?
There’s a big difference between a journalist who has left his job to run, and a man who is an executive and can dictate how news is presented and what actually runs. I’m thinking a concerted effort on the part of all of us to the Press Council of Canada and the CRTC might be in order. We certainly have the right to complain about a biased media becoming even more one-sided. As for MacKay and the heiress, one wonders whether he isn’t being a tad rash in aligning himself with somebody who’s related to a cadre of Quebec Liberals. Is he being used, or is he actively seeking support for his own ambitions?
Steve, do you understand the reason for a mole? Do you understand why even companies, in addition to nations, go to a lot of work to plant one of their own inside their competition?
It does matter Steve. An election is like a short war. If you don’t marshall all of your resources and spend all of your time fighting then you have no excuse if you lose. The last thing you want to do is let the opposition know what you’re strategy is.
In my opinion Belinda was a plant. She even ran for the leadership. She was put in that position for a reason. When she jumped it was because she was told to. And it worked didn’t it? These people have no interest in Canada in my opinion. Their sole interest is power and the bottom line of the corporations they control.

This is a different level. Chief lobbyist for Bell Globe Media, keeping his job while he runs the liberal party campaign, not as a candidate but as a strategist. This is especially egregious since his job is government relations. If I were Rogers or the Aspers I would be pissed that the lobbying arm of their competitor is so in with the GOVERNMENT!!
This should be troubling to all. This is way too cosy. Find an EQUIVALENT current conservative example, provincial is fine with me. I think it is wrong no matter which party engages in this kind of “cosiness” and quasi corruption.
This is a bad thing for Bell, this is a bad thing for the Liberal party and most importatntly it is a bad thing for Canadians. When the CPC does something worthy of them being portrayed in a good light the media will do so. Until then, constantly braying about corruption or making gaffes like claiming the Liberals are connected to organized crime will only generate negative headlines for them.

There are differences between this case and the Peter Kent case, however. This man is a lobbyist for Bell Globemedia, someone who influences how the news is read. Kent, while at Global, hosted “Money Wise”, where there’s really no place to introduce political bias. Furthermore, Kent left his job to run; he still has some secondary position in the network, but not one that influences the news. The fact that this man campaigns for the liberals while directly affecting what is reported on the news is appalling and something must be done. And yes, I would say the same if it were a Conservative in question.
And what of the indirect effect on reporters that would be otherwise even handed. For the sake of self preservation or advancement, you would think they would at least err on the side of the Libs.
