I don’t get all this umbrage about Svend. Under the current law he is permitted to run as a candidate. Period. It’s up to the people in his riding to either elect or deny him. No. But if this is a horrble, terrible thing that disallows you sleep at night, then I suggest one of two things. Go to the riding and work for the candidate of your choice or make a cash donation for same.

We’ve seen that with the NDP that there is a price at which, individually or collectively, they can be bought by the Lie-beral’s. No ethics or morals there.

Knowing someone who is very familiar with the agressive investigation into the malfeasance by members of the Sask PC party, you can rest assured that if Devine wasn’t charged, it’s because there was no evidence against him – and to this day, you won’t find anyone (reliable) who suggests otherwise.
In the case of the Sponsorship program, (and any other number of similar fiascos, both in the federal and Saskatchewan NDP Spudco fraud), nothing substantive in terms of an RCMP investigation has ever been ordered.
But the point is that even if Devine wasn’t criminally responsible, he oversaw an entirely corrupt organization.
Similarly, even if Paul Martin did not know what was going on, he should be held politically responsible for giving money over to a program which was a waste and a fraud.
Grant Devine has no place in electoral politics, and I am sure he would not be elected again. I hope the same is true for Svend (though, to be fair, he at least has admitted his mistake, at least partially. I am not sure Devine ever has).
I’m not sure why you’re so determined to be obtuse – Devine was held responsible, both in electoral defeat of the PC’s and a decade and a half later, the refusal of the federal Conservatives to approve his nomination to run in a riding he came very close to winning as an Independant. He was not bringing the rest of his cabinet with him – he was running as an individual with a clean criminal record – and I’ll add, as a rare former Saskatchewan premier who actually remained in the province when his term was over.
