Subliminal Campaigning

Here’s a letter that’s bound to set off the conspiracy theorists in the ranks of conservatives…

Paul Martin did some pre-election Oktoberfest visiting in Kitchener-Waterloo on October 12th and how coincidental is it that on the day before he arrived regular gasoline was priced at 95.9/litre and on the day of his visit gas dropped to 85/litre? Earlier in the week the gas had been as high at 103.
The PM flew to Owen Sound that day and their gas matched Kitchener’s. I had an appointment in Owen Sound so I saw they had lowered the gas prices. It’s a 2 hours drive between Kitchener and Owen Sound and the gas was high in all areas between the two cities. I drove back to Kitchener the next day after the PM’s visit and gas was up to 99.9 cents per litre.
Just a note on the side: Harper had visited the area a week earlier and visited a local private gas bar, had a press conference and pumped some gas – but the gas didn’t drop on his visit.

  1. Could the letter writer tell us the price he paid for crack in both of those regions, please?

  2. Gas prices in Canadian retail markets follow one of two patterns. Either they creep up slowly over time, and then abruptly drop, or they sort of follow an oscillating pattern like a sine wave.
The reason for the creep up and drop is one competitor attempting to undercut all other competitors in whatever geographic market they’re in, and all the other ones quickly following suit. It’s illegal for them to collude on gas price under the Competition Act, so they have to just watch what the other operators are doing, and when one jumps the gun and drops price, they all follow suit.
This happens in some markets like Vancouver, Edmonton, parts of Ontario, etc.
The oscillating sine wave type of price pattern occurs in the other markets. I’m too lazy to check why there are differences.
Chalk it up to coincidence or one retailer deciding to drop price at that particular time.

Prime Minister Paul Martin campaigns with lawyer Richard Mahoney in the Byward Market in the 2004 election.

Ottawa Centre Liberal candidate Richard Mahoney helped a private satellite radio company that was seeking a favourable cabinet decision on its broadcast licence nearly a month before he registered as a lobbyist for the firm.
Mr. Mahoney, a close friend of Prime Minister Paul Martin’s, says administrative mix-ups in the registration process frustrated attempts by his office to file a public declaration of his lobbying activities.
His admission comes amid new scrutiny of the enforcement of lobbying rules and allegations that former Liberal cabinet minister David Dingwall lobbied for private sector clients without registering. Industry Minister David Emerson last week conceded that there are “lobbyists who just are not paying more attention to the fundamental rules and ethics around dealing with government” and promised to give the official in charge of lobbyists more resources to police the registration.
Mr. Mahoney says he believed he was in compliance with the lobbyist law because he asked his assistant to file a public declaration with Industry Canada’s Lobbyist Registration Branch on Sept. 7 — the night he attended a cocktail party at the prime minister’s residence along with several other supporters of Canadian Satellite Radio (CSR). He said he was wrongly informed that he was registered as of Sept. 8.
“As far as I knew, I was registered,” Mr. Mahoney said. “I didn’t realize we weren’t registered until we got a call on the 4th (of October) asking why we weren’t.”
CSR is a client of Mr. Mahoney’s law firm and was one of two companies granted licences by the CRTC to broadcast in the new digital satellite radio format. The CRTC decision was appealed to cabinet by broadcasters CHUM Ltd. and Astral Media, and other groups who were unhappy with the lower Canadian content requirements in the new licences.
The cabinet appeal was the subject of a vigorous lobbying campaign that kicked into high gear after the Liberal party caucus meeting in Regina in August, when MPs from Quebec expressed dissatisfaction with the licences given to CSR and another company, Sirius Canada. Both firms are affiliated with U.S. satellite radio broadcasters.
Two nights before a cabinet committee would decide on
the appeal, Mr. Mahoney, CSR founder John Bitove and other supporters of the company attended the party at 24 Sussex for members of the Laurier Club — donors who each gave $1,000 or more to the Liberals last year.
Former Ontario premier David Peterson, who is a friend of Mr. Bitove’s, was also at the party, but he denies he was acting as a lobbyist.
“I have no financial relationship with the firm,” Mr. Peterson said. “I’m not a lobbyist.” >>> more

What secrets did computer thieves steal?
Over 700 government laptop, desktop and central-processing units worth $6 million went missing in one year

Canada’s national security is at risk due to hundreds of federal government computers that have disappeared over the past year, says a federal government watchdog.
“It’s up to federal politicians to recognize that Canada’s security is at risk,” said Richard Kurland, who gathered the statistics from Department of Treasury documents.
“We are talking about laptops and desktops stolen from the Department of Defence, RCMP, justice, corrections, customs and revenue. This is serious stuff. It’s a security threat, it’s identity threat. What if those laptops contained information on the Hells Angels?”
Especially troubling is the surge in the number and value of computers that have disappeared from federal government departments between 2004 and 2005.
According to the latest public-accounts-of-Canada reports for the period March 2004 and March 2005, over 700 laptops, desktops and central processing units went missing from 35 federal government agencies — worth $6 million.
In the previous year there were less than 300 computers stolen from 25 federal departments — worth $1.1 million.
This year’s worst victim by far is the Ministry of Industry, which had lost or had stolen 325 laptops, 24 Blackberries, 728 central processing units and 782 monitors — worth $4 million.
Industry Minister David Emerson could not be reached for comment yesterday. >>>> more

  5. I live in Waterloo and I can tell you that the prices there jump up abruptly typically on Monday, then creep down a by 3-4 tenths of a cent a day until Saturday or Sunday, when then drop by 3-5 cents, then jump up again on Monday.
Last week I bought gas at 97.9. Then the next morning all of the stations (including Esso, Sunoco, Petro Canada, and GTO that I could see) suddenly dropped to 89.9, then to 88.5. The next morning it was back to 95.9. I never connected the events at the time.

  6. These missing laptops, Blackberries, and CPUs- did they ever exist in the first place? I mean, these things would have serial numbers, right? Just asking…………

  7. Relatives in K-W have informed me that after Lord Martin decended on their communities the gas was at 1.01 on King Street again the next day….perhaps this is all this criminal is good for…maybe we should make PMPM effegies and duct tape them to our vehicles so the pump price drops when we pull in.

  8. A thing to remember is that there was a plan laid out to lower gas prices FOR PM’S only. Of course PMPM will do anything to save money. I don’t know why he steals enough of our money he could at least pay the same prices.
