Reader Tips

Another busy day ahead, so reader tips it is.
I’ll start things off with a few items spotted in passing;
Further to an item posted here a couple of days ago, (Martin Operative Running For Vancouver Mayor?), Peter Rempel has this update;

Tonight, Councillor Sam Sullivan beat former deputy-premier Christie Clarke for the NPA mayoral nomination in Vancouver. Sullivan will now face the COPE-Vision alliance candidate Jim Green in the upcoming mayoral race.
The news could not be more welcome: Sullivan is an admirable candidate in every sense of the term. Sullivan, a quadriplegic, is a member of the Order of Canada for his work with non-profit agencies which assist Canadians with disabilities. And, in an example of B.C.-style bilingualism, he is fluent in Cantonese.

Greg Staples has been poll tracking in a post titled More of “Nothing’s Changed”. He has charts!

20050728-beckshed-sm.jpg I mentioned “urban refugee” Sean’s photography to a friend today – it seems like a good idea to introduce him to new SDA readers.

Go check out the portfolio.
Dear CTV News,
This evening I was awakened from a nap when your 11 pm newscast came on. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but I seem to recall your coverage of a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza strip just a couple of weeks ago, along with the celebratory gunfire and looting of the arriving “Palestinians”. Said freed peoples have now begun to fire rockets at their neighbors.
So, here’s what has I’m confused. In this item that aired this evening – complete with this clever little Freudian slip of a file name “israel_offensive_050925/20050925” – the following is written;

The Israeli army stepped up its response to rocket strikes from the Gaza Strip with a series of attacks against Islamic militants on Sunday. As Prime Minister Ariel Sharon promised to use “all means” against the militants, Islamic Jihad commander Mohammed Khalil was killed in an airstrike in the Gaza Strip.

Who are they “militating” against, precisely?
Notice: this is a thread for tips only. Also, a general request. Please refrain from using the comments section here for meaningless, off-topic chatter. On-topic debate, even on tangentially related issues is welcome, but the “chat room” format that some seem intent on creating is not. And keep it clean.

  1. Hamas Launches 26 Missiles into Israel, IDF Ready

Will it never end? Israel has bent over backwards, given up its rightfully-won-in-the-1967-war-territory, forcefully evicting its own Israeli citizens from their homes in a goodwill peace gesture towards Palestine.

  2. Ha!
Old Sharon’s gambit is already paying off.
With nary a single Israeli settlement inside Gaza, it’s so much easier now to engage the Hamas “militants.”

Note how veterans are subtly damned in the sub-head: “Veterans feared she’d have two masters”–as if only they had concerns.
And note Michaelle Jean only acquired French citizenship last year. One wonders what the “family reasons” were. Perhaps better career opportunities in France (and the whole EU with French citizenship) until she was offered the GG gig.

  5. POST-KATRINA CRIME: WHAT REALLY HAPPENED?
By Michelle Malkin September 26, 2005 07:39 AM
Remember all those rapes and murders that supposedly took place in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina? By and large, according to a new report, they didn’t happen.
According to Orleans Parish District Attorney Eddie Jordan, “authorities have only confirmed four murders in the entire city in the aftermath of Katrina making it a typical week in a city that anticipated more than 200 homicides this year.”
Officials now say there were only six deaths inside the Superdome. Of those, “four died of natural causes, one overdosed and another jumped to his death in an apparent suicide.” No murders.
At the Convention Center, four bodies have been recovered. Only one of the four deaths appears to have resulted from murder.
An earlier report said that none of the reported rapes in the Superdome and the Convention Center have been substantiated.

On the other hand, this report details gun battles between roving thugs and armed citizens left to fend for themselves.>>>> more

  6. The liberal left moonbats have thrown Cindy somebody into Lake Pontchartrain along with Katrina & Rita: all have been downgraded to nightmares/poured down the memory hole. Ugly American, indeed. So long, Cindy: loser.>>>
Cindy Sheehan: Hurricane Rita was ‘Just a Little Wind and Rain’
    By CK Rairden
    Sep 25, 2005
Anti-war protest mom Cindy Sheehan turned green with envy on Saturday as the cable networks and the rest of America ignored the Sheehan crowd and concentrated on Hurricane Rita, the Category 3 storm that slammed into Texas and Louisiana early Saturday morning.
In a post on the left-wing blog Daily Kos Sheehan let her feelings known.
    Kos
Sheehan wrote: “I am watching CNN and it is 100 percent (Hurricane) Rita…even though it is a little wind and a little rain…it is bad, but there are other things going on in this country today…and in the world!!!!”
Ugh. The phrase ugly American comes quickly to mind.
To their credit the posters on the site slammed Sheehan noting her selfish narcissism.
“Shame on you, you’re jealous of media coverage of other’s suffering. You’ve become a caricature and I no longer support you. I’m ashamed I ever did,” writes hibsnet.
    Added poster Rationality:
“Sorry Cindy, but I must say that the suffering in Texas right now is quite pertinent. In fact, at a time when we have people suffering, left homeless and devastated from “a little wind and a little rain,” I think you can take a break from the camera just for a moment.”
“That is damn stupid. The death toll from these hurricanes is still rising, and you really think the Iraq war doesn’t get covered? What a selfish woman! I’d be downright ashamed to read anything else you have to say from here on in, wrote a poster with the screen name of abuali.
Sheehan gave a quasi-apology somewhere in the thread, but it was quickly discounted.
Cindy Sheehan is really unnecessary at this point.
She will likely soon be abandoned by all with the exception of the outrageously anti-American left.>>>

  9. His stance on ethanol sets Cal professor apart
    Contra Costa Times ^ | 9/26/5 | Judy Silber
Posted on 09/26/2005 7:39:01 AM PDT by SmithL
It began benignly enough as an assignment for the 15 freshmen in Tad Patzek’s UC Berkeley college seminar class. But it soon mushroomed into something much larger.
Patzek found himself in the national spotlight as his scientific paper published in June touched raw nerves throughout the nation’s energy and farm industries. Gas prices were climbing higher; Congress was in the midst of drafting an energy policy; and the article criticized one possible solution — making ethanol fuel from corn.
Hundreds of newspapers wrote about the publication. E-mails flooded Patzek’s in-box. People yelled at him over the phone. He was invited to the National Press Club in Washington to debate the issue and to Chicago to speak to investors.
Patzek and David Pimentel, a Cornell scientist who had been a lone public voice against corn ethanol for more than 30 years, argued that corn ethanol did the environment more harm than good. Growing corn, fertilizing the fields, transporting it to the factories and then out to where it was needed took more energy than the resulting ethanol would ultimately generate, they said.
Detractors, including corn growers, federal government researchers and other academics, took offense at Patzek’s stance. They saw ethanol as an environment-friendly way of reducing the nation’s dependence on foreign fossil fuels.>>> more

I believe Lt. Gen. Russel Honore’s classic admonition to reporters, “Don’t get stuck on stupid,” was one of the best lines so far of the new millennium. Part of its enduring value is its uncanny applicability to politics these days. Gen. Honore made the statement to reporters who insisted on asking about Katrina when he was trying to focus on Rita. He said there would be plenty of time later to sort through inadequacies in the government’s response to Katrina, but for now they need to deal with Rita’s impending wrath. “Don’t get stuck on stupid,” thus became an instant metaphor — at least to me — for “Quit playing gotcha, quit dwelling in the past, and help us with solutions.” Gen. Honore’s metaphor perfectly fits the behavior of Democratic politicians in Washington and caterwauling liberal loons since 2000 — that’s right, the entire millennium, so far. In their singular obsession with George W. Bush — “hatred” is probably more accurate — they have been “stuck on stupid.” To clarify, I’m not calling Democrats in Washington and the whacko left fringe stupid. Far from it. I am saying, though, that their perspective has been tainted by their consuming antipathy for George Bush. They don’t even deny their contempt for President Bush but wear it proudly. I think they would deny, however, its irrationality and poisonous effects. Many seem to think it’s a completely rational reaction to his “contemptible” policies, particularly the war with Iraq. They don’t tell you their ill will for him significantly predated our invasion of Iraq, which many of them, by the way, supported.>>>> more

I just heard Warren Kinsella talking with Bill Good on CKNW radio. He’s talking about his book on Punk Rock, but had this to say about Stephen Harper:
“I knew Stephen in Calgary. He’s a good and decent man.” “I don’t always agree with his policies, but he’s a good man.”
When asked if “…Stephen Harper would ever be Prime Minister?” He said: “He’s closer than most people think. The Liberal Party is dead in Quebec for the next 10 years. Jack Layton has been doing well lately, the NDP could pick up another 15 seats, the Conservatives could pick up another 15, and let’s be generous – the Liberals could pick up 10 in Quebec. That could hand Harper the keys to 24 Sussex. After spending a year or so, and people seeing he doesn’t send Canadian troops to Iraq, doesn’t outlaw abortion or do any other scary things, could get a majority government in the following election.”

OTTAWA (CP) ‘OTTAWA (CP) – A former television reporter running for the Conservatives in the next federal election has challenged journalism schools to settle a question long asked by Tories: are reporters biased against the party?
Peter Kent has written to 29 academics at journalism schools, asking them to closely monitor coverage of the next election.
“Given my first-hand experience in newsrooms across Canada over the years, I believe that most Canadian journalists are small-“l” liberals,” the letter says.
“It is also clear that Canadian journalism schools tend to be staffed by predominantly liberal professors who, year by year, turn out even greater numbers of liberally conditioned graduates and post-grads.”..’

  16. RCMP family members call for justice reform
    CTV.ca News Staff
Family members of four RCMP officers who were killed in Mayerthorpe, Alta. earlier this year want the federal justice system strengthened to better control repeat offenders.
The officers were all gunned down in March during a stakeout on the property of James Roszko, who was suspected of running a marijuana grow operation. Roszko then turned the gun on himself.
The deaths stunned the country and marked the single greatest loss of life in the RCMP since the Northwest Rebellion of 1885.
Roszko had a long criminal record that began at the age of 16 and a reputation as a police-hater. Over his lengthy criminal career, he had several serious charges against him dropped — charges that included unlawful confinement, assault with a weapon and failure to comply with bail conditions.
Don Schiemann, the father of Const Peter Schiemann, who died in the shootout, says there’s something wrong with the justice system that a man with Roszko’s criminal record was not behind bars.
“How is it that Roszko was charged 36 times, convicted 12 times, and still able to walk as a free man?” Schiemann told an Ottawa news conference Monday.
Schiemann, a Lutheran pastor, says Canada’s justice system is flawed in that it allows dangerous offenders to serve concurrent sentences and be freed on statutory release.
“It has gotten to the point where we are asking that if our law enforcement officers are not safe while they are doing their jobs, how safe are you?” he said. “There needs to be punitive justice and protective justice for our society.”>>> more

    Dear Fellow Supporters:
Donna and I have just gone through a really rough week. The crown has
increased it’s attack on us by initiating the process of seizing our home!
We were appalled and stunned that they would resort to such tactics in an
attempt to weaken our resolve to fight this constitutional challenge.
However, these tactics have only highlighted the importance of this fight
even more. The only conclusion we can come to is that the crown must be
scared that we might win, if they have to resort to such low blows like
    taking our home away.
I have included the press release that is being sent to many media outlets
for you to read for yourself.
Yours in Liberty, Bruce. (following are a couple of quotes that seem

    PRESS RELEASE
Ontario AG Moves to Confiscate Family Home
Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant has crossed a line. That line is
the property line of Bruce and Donna Montague, property rights activists
from Dryden, Ontario. On September 16, 2005 an Order was filed in the
Ontario Superior Court at Kenora placing a Crown lien on the Montague’s
residence and preventing them from using the equity in their home to fund
their Supreme Court Challenge to the Firearms Act. The Order was filed by
James McKeachie, Crown Counsel, Civil Remedies for Illicit Activities. If
AG Bryant is unaware of the sleazy tactics employed by his bureaucrats in
their attempts to undermine legitimate challenges to bad laws then he had
better wake up and bring his (and our) employees back in line. If AG
    Bryant
is aware of this order and supports it he is showing support for the most
malicious application of one bad law in order to prop up another; and make
no mistake, this will become an election issue that will hurt him and his
    party politically.
Civil forfeiture laws were put in place to deal with organized crime.
Period. “Civil Remedies for Illicit Activities” allows government to seize
assets such as bank accounts, cash, homes, vehicles requiring reverse onus
on the accused to prove the assets were purchased with legitimately gained
and taxed income. Over time, “jurisdiction creep” has occurred and anyone
accused of a crime by the state may, at the whim of the McKeachies of this
world, be subject to this arbitrary law. One need not be convicted of a
crime in order to be subject to civil forfeiture. One need not even be
charged with a crime. A favorite tactic in some US jurisdictions is to
    stay
criminal charges and proceed with the forfeiture. It is not unheard of to
have no criminal charges at all, yet still seize a citizen’s assets. Is
    our
government picking and choosing the American laws with which they intend to
govern? It would seem they are incorporating American bad habits as well.
The government has two reasons to use civil forfeiture – both of which
stink. One is to increase government revenues. Related to this is the
    fact
that most civil forfeiture is split between the general revenues account of
government and the police agencies that instigate the action. Individual
officers have, in the US, been allowed to personally benefit from such
seizures. The second reason is to deny the accused the opportunity to
    mount
an effective defense, since without assets one cannot afford legal and
    court
costs and is at the mercy of the state.
Questions, Mr. Bryant: is anyone in the OPP benefiting from the pending
civil forfeiture of the Montague property? Did anyone in the Firearms
Center instigate this court order to deprive the Montagues of the funds
required for their civil disobedience defense? Did anyone in the Federal
Government or anyone acting for a lobby group instigate the Order against
    the Montagues?
Bruce and Donna Montague have no criminal record and no associations with
organized crime. They are acting on behalf of a silent majority of
    Canadians
who demand that property rights and laws protecting property be added to
    the
Charter. The Montagues have staked their future and that of their children
in order to challenge a bad law, the Firearms Act. The Firearms Act has not
been tested in the Supreme Court and the Montague case would be the first
challenge. What is the Federal Government afraid of, if they are behind
this attempt to deny the Montagues the opportunity to fund their challenge
with the equity in their home? Has government become so arrogant that it
doesn’t care about what is right? What are Canadians to do if government
plays dirty to deny Canadians their day in court? Attorney General Michael
Bryant needs to ponder this question, and respond quickly to withdraw his
Order against the Montagues. That is the decent, and also the wise, thing
    to do.

    Excerpts:
‘Toronto A prominent Muslim lobby group urged its members Monday to shun both federal and provincial Liberals at the ballot box in the wake of Ontario’s decision to do away with a proposal to allow the use of Shariah law in faith-based arbitration.
A communiqu from the Canadian Islamic Congress calling on the faithful to reconsider their traditional Liberal support was sent to more than 200 mosques across Canada amid questions about whether it’s likely to have much of an impact.
Congress president Mohamed Elmasry said he drafted the missive in hopes of uniting Muslims and influencing Liberal policy before the next federal campaign, expected in the spring…
Although Mr. Elmasry cited Canada’s recently expanded military role in Afghanistan as a major strike against the federal Liberals, Ontario’s recent decision not to allow the use of Shariah was especially galling, he said…’
Just imagine the reaction if a Catholic leader made such a statement.
And remember ‘…Elmasry’s words, during a discussion of terrorism on The Michael Coren Show last week, wherein he declared that all adult Israeli civilians (over 18), regardless of gender, are fair targets, ostensibly because a term of military service is mandatory for nearly all Israelis. “They are not innocent if they are part of a population which is … (the) total population of Israel is part of the army … even if they have civilian clothes … The same if they are women in the army … anybody above 18 is a part of the Israeli popular army.”‘

I’m proud and honored to stand here today, as a Lebanese speaking for Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East. As someone who was raised in an Arabic country, I want to give you a glimpse into the heart of the Arabic world.
I was raised in Lebanon, where I was taught that the Jews were evil, Israel was the devil, and the only time we will have peace in the Middle East is when we kill all the Jews and drive them into the sea….
…They blame suicide bombing on the “desperation of occupation”. Let me tell you the truth. The first major terror bombing committed by Arabs against the Jewish state occurred ten weeks before Israel even became independent…

Instead, the Chronicle committed the sin of omission: it told you the truth, but it didn’t tell you the whole truth.
Because the whole truth — that the girl was part of a group of naive teenagers recruited by Communist activists to wear terrorist-style bandannas and carry Palestinian flags and obscene placards — is disturbing, and doesn’t conform to the narrative that the Chronicle is trying to promote. By presenting the photo out of context, and only showing the one image that suits its purpose, the Chronicle is intentionally manipulating the reader’s impression of the rally, and the rally’s intent.
Such tactics — in the no-man’s-land between ethical and unethical — are commonplace in the media, and have been for decades. It is only now, with the advent of citizen journalism, that we can at last begin to see the whole story and realize that the public has been manipulated like this all along.
