THE fast-food chain, Burger King, is withdrawing its ice-cream cones after the lid of the dessert offended a Muslim. The man claimed the design resembled the Arabic inscription for Allah, and branded it sacrilegious, threatening a “jihad”.
The chain is being forced to spend thousands of pounds redesigning the lid with backing from The Muslim Council of Britain. It apologised and said: “The design simply represents a spinning ice-cream cone.”
The offending lid was spotted in a branch in Park Royal last week by business development manager Rashad Akhtar, 27, of High Wycombe. He was not satisfied by the decision to withdraw the cones and has called on Muslims to boycott Burger King. He said: “This is my jihad. How can you say it is a spinning swirl? If you spin it one way to the right you are offending Muslims.”

Rashad Akhbar is more than welcome to urge his fellow pilgrims, (uh……did I say a bad word?), to boycott Burger King’s eateries, ( because I don’t nosh there anyway). Offering leaflets,( politely), to pedestrians is okay, too.
The anti- icecream cover people, (!?!) would score a lot more attention in Hyde Park, though, ( Hyde Park is set up for that kind of thing, and checking out the rants can be kinda fun on a nice day).

It looks like Shell has been burning some creative midnight oil of their own. They’ve developed an ingenious approach to oil shale that may change things for Alberta’s plans of making a killing over the next 15 or so years from the tar sands. And it looks like they are planning to launch it in the oil shale areas of Colorado, not the tar sands of Alberta.

Has anyone heard about any plans for this in Alberta? This seems like a big story to me, as far as Alberta’s future hopes for oil revenue are concerned and also about the perceived “oil shortage” the “experts” have been harping about for a few years. Notice that it’s profitable at $30/barrel.
I can see a few advantages for doing this in Colorado instead of northern Alberta – weather, closer to markets, control over regulations, etc.

Pipeline – 1 to west coast, 1 to USA. Oil costs/barrel= mid teens to $10 at the lowest plant.

John, I read somewhere that Shell IS doing a great deal of research on oilsands and is leading the way on partially underground refineries (less pollution, less disruption to the environment). This could be part of that research, or separate, hard to say.

Why make it seem like a threat to Albertas oil industry? They would just start using the technology there if it was feasible. The Alberta tar sands is in the $15 barrel range for production so the Shell method is still a ways off.
The design is easily able to pass for a big fat “W” with an apostrophe! Now you know the real reason they hate it! I have a problem with the CBS eeye. It looks just like a fish and I, as a Christian, take offense at this causual use of holy symbols. CBS should change it to a more appropriate symbol to match their reporting – a giant silicon breast – to represent false news- straight from the heart!
There’s nothing more offensive than Islam. I wonder if we can have it banned?

Nothing new. Similar to the oil sands, the cost to extract the oil is more than simply pumping oil out of the ground. Higher crude prices will cover the higher costs involved.
