Knowing The Enemy, Redux

A good time to revisit this essay by Bill Whittle – particularly for those who have found their way to the blogosphere only recently, perhaps through searches for information on the London bomb attacks.

If someone is coming toward me in an alley, knife drawn, I do not give a damn why their socio-economic status may have had an influence in coloring their worldview regarding income redistribution. To take such a position rather than preparing to defend yourself is suicide, and we will come back to this later because it is a key to understanding what is going on out there.
Radical Islam is a religious cult based on constant, never-ending warfare. I personally am aware of no other religious tracts that are as filled with page after page of conquest, strategy and military jargon. Islam rose to prominence under the sword, and the Prophet was, above all else, a military commander determined to spread his faith by conquest and enslavement. Islam has rules for when prisoners should be released, ransomed, sold into slavery or have their throats cut. As a matter of fact, Islam has rules for everything. What to eat, how to wash, where and when and in which direction to pray. Islam has rules for the treatment of animals and the treatment of women. There is no part of daily life that is not specifically addressed, sanctioned or outlawed by Islam.
And contrary to post 9/11 spin, the most accurate translation of Islam is not “peace.” Prior to 9/11, the nearly universally accepted translation of the concept of Islam was “submission.”

I don’t care if you don’t like what he has to say. I don’t care if it makes your PC antennae swivel in indignation and alarm. If your first reaction is to respond with the insipid “hatemonger!” epithet, then you need to grow up. We all need to grow up. And most importantly, the national media that has been virtually ignoring the growing bodycounts of radical Islam worldwide in favour of wall-to-wall coverage of garden variety psychopaths and the quirkiness of the Hollywood actors needs to grow up.

First, Islam philosophically divides the world into two camps – this is Islam'[s definitions, not mine — Dar al-Islam and Dar al-Harb. Dar al-Islam is the House of Submission. Dar Al-Harb is not the House of Infidels. It is the House of War.

  1. Have you read Exodus, Leviticus, or Numbers recently? Islamic rules are not much different than what is contained in the Christian Old Testament aka Jewish Scriptures.

  2. What’s always bothered me is the lack of forceful Islamic leadership stepping forward to publically denounce this kind of bullshit.
After 9/11, the most prominent voice I heard defending Islam as a religion of peace and not represented by the terrorists was…George Bush.
If someone were doing this in the name of Catholicism, you can be damn sure that the Pope would be front and center denouncing the actions of these idiots and saying “This is not what Catholicism is about, and these idiots are not Catholics”.
Why is there no such statement from prominent Muslim leaders?

You paint Islam with a very broad brush – and what sort of proposals for treating with Islam comes out of your worldview? Do all Muslims in western countries get rounded up and thrown into christianization camps? What about Hindus? Some of them seem pretty fundamentalist in outlook these days. I think focusing on the terrorists, hunting them down, however long it takes is a better approach, especially if we believe in liberal democracy.
Perhaps we are competing with a worldview that’s uncompromising, but let’s attempt to win over the compromisers first before we try and eradicate a 1400 yr old religion practiced by a billion or so people.

  4. I don’t see Christians blowing up buses and subways. I don’t see Christians cutting people’s throats and making a video of it, later to use it for recruiting purposes and also for “entertainment”.
I am no authority in the bible, although I have read it cover to cover. I live in the present. I am concerned with people who want to kill me, my family and my friends, today. Whatever their reasons, they are of absolutely no interest to me.
We should all be careful with what we say here. There are many in Canada who would not like what we are saying.

  5. “You paint Islam with a very broad brush”
What part of the adjective “radical” did you miss?

  6. A significant difference, Ian, is that few of our pastors and priests make a career of brainwashing their congregations to pursue militant conversion or murder of infidels. Nor do Christian societies instill the ambition to become “shahid” or martyr in their young. The parallel you chose is invalid.
Kate, I’ve long thought on the same line you have taken here. Western civilizations do need to understand the enemy. Bernard Lewis has some excellent works addressing Islamism and the implacability of its adherents.

  7. Polly, either I was unclear or projected your own thoughts onto my comment. I was not drawing any “parallel” or any analogy, or anything else. I pointed out a fact: Islamic rules are not much different than what is contained in the Christian Old Testament aka Jewish Scriptures.

If you want a sneak peek at the benefits of compromising with Islam take a minute to do some google work on Europe’s excellent adventures in liberal democracy. Holland, France and Germany alone will keep you busy for days. Britain will take weeks. Did you know that in places like Algeria or Morocco they hava code speak for enrolling in terrorist training camps? They say “Going to England”.

  9. Sorry Ian, I misunderstood your intent.
I just hope it won’t take another two millenium for Islam to interpret the ancient laws in terms more compatible with modern civilization. The planet is shrinking.

  10. Ian, what is your point?
The request to be careful about what is said here plays into the hands of the Islamic terrorists and their ally: the hard left liberal/socialists, both in Canada and worldwide. How would you prefer to die? On your feet or on your knees, in submission to the evil Islamic terrorists?
The fact is you may not be interested in the Islamic terrorists; however, the Islamic terrorists are interested in you.
Islam is indeed, the religion of war; war against everyone else; the infidels. War to the death. Are you prepared for war against our enemy?

  11. I apologize for missing the ‘radical’ from the first quote but it isn’t in the second quote. Radical islam is of course the noncompromising part of Islam that we must defeat.

  12. maz2, must one have a point when making the observation of reality and facts? You may draw whatever conclusions you wish from the fact I pointed out. Then your conclusions can become your own point.
Do you have some feelings about the fact I pointed to? Was it “inappropriate” in your opinion? What is YOUR point in asking me what my point is?

  13. LOL…poor Ian! I think perhaps Maz attributed some of John’s comment to you.
    Maybe I misunderstood, Maz?

  14. By being careful I simply meant what I said. Canada is a safe place for many undesirable people today, thanks to the Liberal Party. These people will not take kindly to any attempt to change the rules that let them come and go as they please.
On the streets of several cities in Canada today, yes, Canada, there are people being killed because they said the wrong thing, at the wrong time, to the wrong people.
I do like the conversation here though. It’s good to toss things around. During my whole life all I wanted was to break even, and live in peace. I want my family and friends to be safe. Today they are not safe. The time will come to stop talking and start doing.
    That’s all I meant.

Sen. John McCain told Fox News today that the reason Americans should pay very close attention to what happened today in London is because “This is a grim reminder of the war that we continue to fight against people who want to destroy everything we and our friends across the Atlantic stand for and believe in.” Regarding our own homeland defenses, McCain told interviewer Shepard Smith, “We have made progress, we have a long way to go, and if we fail to take the fight to the enemy, the enemy will take the fight to us.” Smith pointed out to…

    Of shoes–and ships–and sealing-wax–
    Of cabbages–and kings–
And why the sea is boiling hot–
    And whether pigs have wings.”

  16. If some group threatens to harm us if we comment on their murderous actions, we are duty-bound to speak up.

  17. >let’s attempt to win over the compromisers first before we try and eradicate a 1400 yr old religion practiced by a billion or so people.
Good point. What do you propose to try that hasn’t been tried in the past 1400 years, and when should we call our attempts to be at an end?

  18. “To regard Islam as ripe for taming, and to regard displays like the present rioting as idiosyncratic manifestations of extremism, is to underestimate Islam — even, perhaps, to disrespect it a little. The faith is either true, or it is an intractable problem for the global order. There’s no third choice.” — Colby Cosh
So how does one deal with an intractable problem?

  19. Sean. “So how does one deal with an intractable problem?”
You do what John McCain says to do, and what Bush and Blair are doing. You take the fight to the enemy, in their home. You remember that this is a fight to the finish, that there can be no surrender at this stage. And you remember why Dresdan was bombed into the ground, and two very large bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. For those who may be a bit too young to remember or understand, I will tell you why. It was to take away any, ANY, semblance of small victory or misplaced honor on the part of the enemy. It is to say, simply, that this is what you get when you mix with us. It is to win a total, TOTAL, victory over this scum. Period.

  20. Right, John. Nothing short of totally humiliating defeat will end terrorism. The enemy must unconditionally surrender. That is the lesson of history, particularly wrt WWII. Granted, I wasn’t around then, but I have examined through history what happened. Both Germany and Japan surrendered. We helped them rebuild. Now they are peaceful.
I doubt if the Canadian state has been teaching this lesson. I learned all of it on my own. Nothing in school. Pity.
