SSM Bill Deal: The Libs Approached

I’ve had two private emails now that indicate that the media chatter about the Conservatives trying to orchestrate a delay for the passage of the SSM bill C 38 in exchange for supporting the NDP-Buzz Hargrove budget Bill C 48 is in fact, wrong.
Not just a little wrong. Backwards, upside-down wrong. Bungling fools. Do you wonder if they’re ever going to start noticing when they’ve been had? The Liberals approached the Conservatives.

In fact, after the (34 in total?) Liberal MP’s met with Martin on Monday to implore him to postpone the vote on theC-38, the Liberals approached the Conservativesand asked to negotiate (as any minority government should?). The Liberals proposed that if the Conservatives would agree to push through the vote on the Liberal-NDP Budget Bill (C-48) without further debate – even though the Conservatives would vote against this C-48 (as will the Bloc),the Liberals in turn would ensure that the Bill C-38 (redefining the traditional definition of marriage) is put off until more debate and consideration over the summer (…re: protection of institutions that would elect not to perform same-sex marriages, etc.). The Conservatives were considering this negotiation in good faith – then the Liberals leaked it to the media yesterday.

Conservatives had been weighing the Liberal proposal: Pull witnesses from further debating the Liberal-NDP budget C-48 to allow the vote to proceed immediately – with the Conservatives continuing to vote against it. In turn the Liberals would guarantee the Bill C-38 was postponed until Fall.

And how many times do they need to be screwed over before the Conservatives stop negotiating with Paul Martin?

  1. Kate:
If your version is true, how long until conservatives revolt against the MSM. This version is totally different from what the MSM was reporting. This can be nothing but an intentional fabrication. Is your version accurate and how do you know?

  2. John Williams, MP for St. Albert, broke it open on the Rutherford show on 630 CHED.
Geoff Norquay was taped for TV with the same story.

  3. And can you imagine how the MSM would have played it if 1/4 of the CPC’s MPs had voted against the party on this question?
“Quarter of Tory MPs against social conservative leadership: party deeply split over values issues”
    From the other standpoint:
“Quarter of Liberal MPs vote against Charter rights”
I cannot imagine the latter headline.

  4. Vin,
    Check Monte’s Solberg’s Blog on “media mis-information”.
    And quit doubting Kate!

  5. Vin,
    You’re joking right?
The Conservatives needed to revolt against MSM a long, long, very, very long time ago. In the meantime, many vulnerable and unreliable conservatives are betting that a Harper summer make-over will win him better polling. They are naive. Harper ain’t the problem.
I wonder how many conservatives are still wasting their loonies on MSM loonies?
I also wonder how liberals are able to pee while lying down? But I digress…..

  6. Jesus, haven’t they ever seen Lucy yank a football? They did that play recently, and got a new faux blonde, Belinda ( L- Magna).

  7. John Reynolds was on “Rutherford” today and explained how the scenario really went… I’ll bet dollars to donuts that the MSM doesn’t pick it up…

  8. The MSM keeps demonizing Harper because they are all Liberals who dont want change and are afraid of not getting invited to all those witty Liberal events if they speak out against Dithers. You just have to listen to cfra in ottawa to realize these people are not jounalists ,just puppets playing up to the owners of all these Liberal media outlets. What we need here is a Canadian style FOX NEWS .

  9. From what I’ve heard, the Liberals are going to lay the WHOLE blame for putting off the SSM bill onto Harper.
Martin will be saying that Harper said that the courts should not decide SSM; the legislature should. [Which is what the Supreme Court said]. And now, Martin is going to claim that ‘Harper got what he wanted’..the chance to debate in the House of Commons..and yet now..he doesn’t want to debate; he wants to put it off’.

  10. Can a government in a minority invoke closure? How many times have the Libs invoked closure over the past 12 years?
This one isn’t, and won’t be, on Harper’s head

  11. ET,
According to Politics Watch, today, that’s exactly what Martin has done. When will Canadians wake up? This isn’t governing, this is playing games. We need governance–less of it, not more– but still governance. All we are getting now is an uphill race on a threadmill.

  12. Is it remotely possible, that this whole SSM thing was nothing more than a smokescreen from the getgo?

  13. I already heard it on the radio , Martin blamed Harper for the SSM bill negotiations, again taking the high road stating that it is UP to Harper to allow this very important bill to PASS, blah, blah, blah, spin, spin, spin ….

  14. Media misinformation
Some media reports are saying that the Conservatives will support Bill C 48, the NDP Budget Deal, in exchange for changes to C 38. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.
We will never support C 48, because it is everything we think is wrong with the Libs. It is sloppy, without vision and open to waste. It was conceived by Paul and Jack in a Toronto hotel room that you rent by the hour. It was made up on the fly. In other words it is a classically Liberal piece of work.
We will vote against it, even while we are trying to get amendments to improve it. We may be less aggressive on it if we can get concessions on 48 or elsewhere, but we don’t see that happening right now. So, for now we speak and criticize a terrible piece of legislation born of a corrupt government that will do anything to stay in power.

  15. Old Squid:
I wasn’t doubting Kate, just asking for a reference for my own knowledge – and by the way, thanks for pointing me to Solberg’s blog.
    Anslem:
I do admit that I am somewhat new to this blog but several times I have mentioned the MSM bias, this isn’t something new to me, I’ve known it for years. My point is we conservatives haven’t really “revolted”. We bitch and whine but it is time to hold them to task and challenge them continually, not just on conservative websites. We need to get aggressive with them (in a figurative sense)!!!

  16. Well, personally speaking I no longer watch CBC TV at all, only an hour or two of CTV a week, and maybe that much of CBC radio a month.
Also just turned down a “fantastic double your money back offer” to subscribe to the Star Phoenix.
When I hear something particularly obscene in terms of slanted reporting, I say something about it. Phone is best. Do some yelling.. or alternately, calmly describe why you just changed the channel and dont’ intend to change it back in the foreseeable future.

  17. Martin’s been slamming Harper about it all day. As has the Lib House Leader (whose name escapes me). What’s interesting, though, is if you watch the CTV clips on this, including the 8-9 minutes of the guy in charge of Equal Marriage, you’ll see HIM slam Martin (where’s the leadership? who’s in charge? who’s prime minister, PM or SH?)
Similar questions were thrown at PMPM in the scrum, he chose to ignore them and walk away. Because the reality is, according to the number of MPs in the house FOR SSM, it could pass in a heartbeat. And everybody knows it.
It was interesting, I got a call from Equal Marriage today thanking me for my support. I jumped in and said “when, exactly, did I support you? Did I sign a petition or something I’ve forgotten about?” and he said “oh, you DON’T support us?” and I said “no, I prefer the compromise proposed by the CPC thanks” and hung up. And then kicked myself for not getting into a debate with him.
    Oh well. Another day…
One question – in the above-noted clip the EM guy says “76% of Canadians are in favour” – where is that number coming from, anybody know?

  18. How about we all pitch in $1 and buy Paulie a ticket to say, Costa Rica (no extradition treaty, right, which is why Maurice is there?)? And take out a full page ad in all the nationals showing a photocopy of the ticket? It would be cheap at 10X the price.

  19. CANDACE:
The last and only figure I have ever heard is 76% AGAINST SSM.
But if they repeat a lie often enough….

  20. Good comeback by Harper, though. He tells the scrum: Well, if the Prime Minister wants to blame, that’s fine. I’ll take the credit. We’ve been honest about our position from the beginning, and so have 34 or 35 of his own party. I’ve detected a little bit more give in the media these days, maybe because Harper has handled himself so well under their pit-bull attacks. And Global carried a nice piece on all the young Tories and even allowed them to speak. They really are an impressive bunch. Far more impressive than the Librano$.

  21. I watched CTV news and Roger Smith did say that Dithers tried to put the blame on Harper for delay in the SSM bill, then he went on to say that Martin has the votes, and can invoke closure to bring the bill forward. He basically said it can’t be blamed on Harper. Thats something coming from CTV.

  22. The tide must be turning. Look at CTV’s article “Chinese Spies cost Canada Billions: Harper” – check out the NAMES of the clips on the side – they’re pulling a Lib trick on the Libs.
3rd clip QP “alleged spies” (from bottom up, as that’s the chrono order)
1st clip NewsNet: Harper asks Martin about the spies…
    Interesting.

  23. Is the tide turning?
Or — having saved the Liberals from certain defeat and looking at a dry news summer — has the media decided to level the playing field a little in the hopes of eliciting more audience-generating scandal?

  24. I think the Conservatives should just, let it go. People on the right should just talk about something else. Say…Smirky’s 4.6bil cocktail napkin.

  25. Perhaps the CPC should sue the MSM. A nice slander suit would be nice. You know, take a cue from the Liberals. Make the MSM prove their stories. Rather than being allowed to get away with repeating the Liberal line over and over they need to be taken to task. Where are all those mean Alberta lawyers when you need ’em.

  26. Knight, you troll you… “Conservatives should just let it go…”
go read the Red Book or something already.
    Shameer – good catch!

  27. The so-called “mainstream media” (they’re not mainstream; we, the people who blog, are) are indeed playing a sinister game with us all. What happened with Adscam is the MSM decided to have some fun and sell papers etc. and beat up the Libs for a while while all the while planning to bring them immediately back from the edge of the grave by suddenly absolving them of their crimes and turning around and beating up the Conservatives.
Bloody unbelievable. We, the people, cannot trust the MSM, really! It does no better than what a Communist totalitarian state does in terms of telling the people what to think and destroying all who dare to think for themselves and point out, via our Charter-guaranteed right of free speech, what is the obvious truth!
I implore everyone, particularly in Central Canada, across the spectrum, to please, for the love of your country and of humanity, DO NOT VOTE FOR LIBERALS!

  28. O Cannuckistan!
    Our cold and niave land!
True socialist love, in all PM’s commands.
With witless hearts we see thee fall,
The True North weak and frail!
From far and wide, Cannuckistan, we sleep on guard for thee.
Libs keep our land, socialist and bound!
Cannuck-istan, we sleep on guard for thee.
Cannuck-istan, we sleep on guard for thee.

  29. What continues to amaze me is that the chief shill for the Liberal party (the Globe and Mail) is still able to sell newspapers in very conservative areas of the country such as Alberta. The Globe will only lose their bias when the corporate guys tell them to do so to recover sales. Boycott anybody!

  30. Folks we are making a difference. Any progress in that area is slow to be sure, but keep hammering away. Hardly a week goes by that I am not emailing CBC or CTV or Duffy or some politician or someone to get the message right. (I am retired so I have the time) There is a glimmer of hope. I think Duffy has at least come part way. Just keep at em.

  31. Once Grewal’s tapes are cleared by the RCMP, the CPC/Grewal should launch a suit against G&M, Star and other usual suspects. I think the Libs are finally pissing off a lot of folks (see Chantal Hebert today in Toronto Star). This Chinese spies in Canada story has legs. The media will have all summer to hammer it home, and it will be particularly damaging to the Libs when it turns out that we’ve probably actually given them permission to be here so they could learn how a good, benign socialist government can function without killing innocents.

  32. You’ll see on Monte Solberg’s blog, that he too verifies that the MSN screwed the story of the C-48/C-38 negotiations. I didn’t see any retraction of the CTV coverage (TV and their internet page)

  33. Did you notice last night that Transport Canada cleared Grewal of any wrong doing – when he passed a package to a friend in the airport lounge, he was then able to delay his flight to Ottawa until the next day. Will be interesting to see if this story clearing Grewal gets as broad coverage as they gave when they first blew it out of proportion. IF the RCMP and the Ethics Commissioner and the Bar Association do come through verifying the original tapes are clean, and Murphy, Dosanji and David Peterson are reprimanded by the Bar…Mr. Harper will look very decent in supporting his M.P. (?) How will Mr. Martin, Scott Reid et al be allowed to spin this so Canadians continue to believe the most important aspect of this story is “the taping” rather than the contents of “the tape”?

  34. CBC is a taxpayer funded institution, it’s ours. so we should be able to petition it’s destruction.
It no longer serves the purpose it was created for so lets get rid of it.
Petition your MP to do away with this waste of taxpayer money and rid ourselves of a destructive force in Canada.
There is nothing on CBC that is not offered on other stations, therefore CBC is a waste.

  35. Globe and mail does not have as wide coverage in Alberta as you think. Have you ever used Mr.Lube? They give them away while you wait. The Globe is forced to give away their papers here so they can say they have alot of readers. Don’t ever believe that.

  36. NEWS FLASH: RCMP Cleared GREWAL of the BC Airport incident. I heard this on the Radio…
CBC must be SOLD and privatized. They are competing for Advertising Revenues against commercial private media on top of it being funded by the PUBLIC thru our taxes, so why NOT privatize and find out if they can survive in the OPEN Market, to be consistent. I can see the Public Service Union Bosses shaking and trembling in fear right now!!!
    M. Duffy is still letting Librano$ and Lefties dominate the airwaves during interviews. I e-mailed him 2 days ago to inform him that I stopped watching his show because of his kid-glove handling of this unacceptable attitude by Librabo$ , specially the astoundingly arrogance of Stan Keyes and open faced lies of Uddal(where is Fair and Balanced I asked him ???) . Maybe he is still afraid of being closed down AGAIN by the long arm of the Librano$ via CRTC. Keep taking Duffy to task !!!
I watched the CPAC last night on the deliberations for C-48 Buzz Hardgrove budget (why an unelected of UNION BOSSMAN is weilding so much power and CLOUT in the government via his stooges in the NDP (the tail is wagging the dog…) ??) . I loved how the YOUNG Conservative MPs(men and women alike) held up great arguements together with the OLD Tried and True Conservative Parliamentarians (and I must say Ms. Ambrose and Guergis are BOTH LOOKERS and SMART Cookies!!!). I liked how they hammer the point that the C-48 bill (all 1 1/2 pages of it) will cost $4.6B without any details or deliberations at all, costing taxpayers somewhere around $250K per NDP MP vote, as well as somewhere around 40K per word on the bill ?

  37. Isn’t that how Adscam became the monster it did? It was an idea without a plan, same as C-48. All those programmes are provincial anyway, so by agreeing to this, the feds, in fact, are admitting they’ve underfunded the provinces by $4.6 billion (at least)over the years.

  38. Please tell us the story about the dog lady who sent her dogs by air to wherever. Did she solicit Seeing Eye people to lead the number one dog or the number two,3,4, dog?
Did her actions contravene the Aeronautics Act?
Think number one dog is the best slot to be in?
Mush; on you Siberian huskies or Samoyeds: the Librano$$$$$$ are trying to snow us. Igloo them.

  39. Ron, did you also notice that every Liberal MP was giving the same old “oh, Mulroney left us a huge deficit” and FINALLY our party is responding to those arrogant, self-righteous LIE-berals by pointing out that 90% of those deficits were created by Trudeau?

  40. Ron,
Is the figure per NDP vote not: Two Hundred, Fifty Million Dollars per NDP vote?
Is that why Buzzsaw Hargrove, aka Canadian Auto Workers union, is in on the loot? Also, Mr. Ed Broadbent (bent), hero to the Socialist/Red Tories, was originally MP for Oshawa, home of the twins GM/CAW.
Mr. Ed is a Socialist tribune with a mocking smile, like the fabled Cheshire cat of Lewis Carroll. (aka, the Cheshire puss).

  41. Maz2, I’d agree re Ed’s past, but right now, he’s probably one of the few ethical members of parliament driving the investigation into the PM’s role in Grewal fiasco. I’m not even convinced he’s leaving because of his wife’s illness alone. I think he’s genuinely disgusted at the new-style smear-and-fear politics that passes for campaigns these days. Aside from his socialist leanings, I do think he is a solid guy. Nobody’s perfect 🙂

  42. I watched most of the Bill C48 debate last night on CPAC. Conservatives talked and Liberanos tried to mock. I enjoyed all of the speeches – they were singing from my favorite song sheet! – something interesting was pointed out by Art Hanger (M.P. from Calgary); he said to a chorus of hisses and jeers (from the ‘wrong’ side of the House) that it was the Reform Party that gave Cretin and his Finance Minister the road map for reducing the debt in Canada, he said the reason the Reform party went to Ottawa was to prevent Canada from going over the brink into a Socialist Dictatorship. I remember how the Reform Party went on and an about reducing the debt and forced the Liberals into corners by calling the Liberal bluffs. Redicule was the weapon of the left wing wackos (NDP, Liberals, PCs,MSM)at the time and it worked. MSM sneering stopped the sleepy, infantile, insecure Canadian people from latching on to the great DEMOCRATIC ideas FOR Canadians as proposed by The Reform Party.
Mr. Stephen Harper was the mastermind behind many of Reforms great ideas and when he was voted leader of the Alliance Party, he managed to merge the ‘acceptable'(MSM) PC party with the ‘unacceptable’ (MSM)Reform/Alliance. The MSM are now seeing that the ideas of the Conservatives are beginning to reasonate with voters IN SPITE of sneering belittling efforts of all the left wing nuts. It is becomming ‘less fashionable’ to be a left wing Socialist!! What is to be done?!!
The MSM lefto’s never forget who feeds them, they have not forgotten the proposed reforms of The Reform Party . MSM know they will have a lot of groveling to do if the gov’t changes and they have the inflated ego’s of the pampered prima donna’s that they are – somewhat like a certain yellow haired gal in HRDC – we MUST never give them ANY trust AT ALL. The MSM are ‘cubboard-lovers’ like rats, they don’t care where they eat as long as the food is free and they have a warm place to sleep. There are great, fearless writers in Canada, shunned by the MSM/Liberano/ND outfit – Coyne, Styne, Rutherford, Frum, Levant…, everyone who thinks in this country knows the intellegent people in the media who have been speaking out against government corruption for years. The people of Canada will loose everything if these brave people are silenced by the re-election of the Liberano/ND outfit; the MSM know this – that is why they ‘jeer’, ‘jeering’ is the weapon of cowards – let us never fall into that pit. ‘Leave the Party with the one who brought you ‘ otherwise you could be dubbed as a ‘you know what/who’?

  43. Iron Lady:
The Socialist’s task is to make us perfect. Mr. Ed & his Socialist pals would make all of us perfect, or dead.
    Good-bye, Mr. Ed.

  44. I guess you’re right, Maz2. But it is Mr. Ed who has been the driving force behind the investigation into Martin and Murphy’s roles in Grewalgate (??). Jumpin’ Jack Flash-but-no-substance make a pitiful attempt to push for an investigation, but Eddy’s been relentless.
