Jack Mitchell is the owner of Computer Audio Engineering in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In an interview I found, he definitely sounds like he knows what he’s talking about (even if the interviewer didn’t — an “FFT” is a “Fast Fourier Transform” — a way of depicitng sound content as a spread over frequencies instead of a spread over time). On the other hand, he proudly lists the American College of Forensic Examiners as as his only professional forensic certification.
If the ACFE home page looks a bit cheesy, you’re not the only one to notice.

There is a chorus of experts that say Grewal manipulated the tape. Just ask Peter McKay.

The real question is did Harper manipulate the tapes when he had them for 14 days. What was he doing with them for all that time? It is simply too conicidental that the 10 second technical glitch, which is now 16 minutes, removed the most damaging parts to Grewal. Grewal clearly was trolling for a cabinet post or senate appointment. He’s screwed.

Give Me A Break is right – are you saying that they had actors doing voice impressions on the tapes? Because there are some blips in the duplicate copies I guess we just ignore all the rest?

The ONLY thing the RCMP and the ethics commisioner need to look at with regards to the PMO and Dosanjh are the ORIGINAL tapes.
Regarding the latest COPY of the ORIGINAL tapes, so far they appear to be in order: e.g. from the Globe:
“The repeated cup of tea section is not on a new version of the recordings issued by the Conservatives last Thursday”.
The ethics commissioner should review the copying errors and if shown to be deliberate that is a separate matter also deserving of sanction.
Grewal has stepped down from his critic’s position. The three opposition leaders are correct, Murphy and Dosanjh need to step aside if responsibility is a word the Liberals can still spell.
As a history lesson – it was bloggers who dug into the qualifications of the “expert” interviewed on 60 Minutes over the validity of the memos made famous by Rathergate.
No one at CBS mentioned his specialty was signatures – yet they presented him as an authority on verifying documents.
Politicians making deals and offers happens all the time. To get capture the discussions on tape is pretty rare. To crudely manipulate those conversations by removing passages or inserting words into the middle of a passage in an attempt to change the meaning of the conversation is truly bizarre. It certainly isn’t what one would expect from a party wishing to form the gov’t, but it is what many would expect from the Harper led Tories (i.e. amateur hour).
Happydaze perhaps you could go over to blogscanada.ca/egroup and explain that to those people. Sheesh they’re hard to convince.

I did miss the challenge to the newer copy at the bottom of the Globe article. Note that whatever Mitchell’s qualifications actually are he isn’t actually standing behind that conclusion, “But Mr. Mitchell said it would take further analysis to determine that with certainty”.
As I stated if there are deliberately misleading copies afoot that will deserve sanction.
The primary matter is on the original tapes and that will be for the ethics commisioner and the RCMP to sort out, not somebody with a certificate from whereever.

Look at the phone records:
� Twenty-seven (27) Phone calls from Sudish Kalia (who claims Grewal approached him first) to Grewal;
� Six (6) Phone calls from Ujjal Dosanjh (the guy who says he told Grewal �no� and then called back five (5) more times say �no� again and set up a meeting with Tim Murphy); and
� Five (5) phone calls from Tim Murphy who claims no offers were made or deals discussed.
Then go back to the start and follow the Liberal story.
� There were no meetings with Grewal;
� You have tapes? In that case there were meetings but Grewal approached us and we told him �no�;
� You are hiding all of the tapes and only releasing a few moments of conversation and they don’t prove Grewal didn’t come to us;
� Now that we have the tapes the tapes were altered;
� The Prime Minister didn’t know about the meetings;
� Ooops, the second release of tapes show Murphy and Dosanjh offering to let Grewal talk to Martin, so OK, the Prime Minister knew but told us not to make any offers;
� Gosh, these tapes have at least as many holes as our stories, so they must be fake!

The originals don’t matter at this point. Grewall was caught lying to the Candian public. Caught in a black and white, anyone can understand sort of lie- not the confusing type of lies from Adscam.
Any sort of prosecution is probably down the drain as well. Who would the start witness for the prosecution be ? A proven liar. Your prime piece of evidence ? A recording from a tape forger.
Either way, there is a good chance we can see Gewall taking the fifth at a trial or, being frog-walked out of his office by the RCMP (if he is stuipid enough to put fakes on his website, why not give them to the RCMP as well).
Either way, it would be alot better if he was an independent MP when it happens.

As the pressure mounted on Grewal they added extortion by Liberal Volpe filing false allegations to the ethics commissioner and the RCMP.
Then the calls continued and Grewal decided that he would play along and get the proof.
We have all seen what happened next.

Have the media interview people in his riding. Question his integrity and his entire life.

The results where: Yes 18420 votes (63 %) No 11037 votes (37 %)
Despite the media’s attempt to demonize Ms. Parrish and to portray her as some kind of pariah, the poll revealed that thousands of Canadian disagreed with Prime Minister Martin’s decision to dismiss her. Regardless of the media’s attempt to manufacture some kind of pro-American / pro-Bush consensus in this country, the fact is many Canadians have grave concerns over what the Americans are doing on a number of issues and Canada’s increasing cozy relationship with an extremist right-wing, war mongering US President. Canadians have been pounded into silence by the intensifying shrill voices coming from Parliament and the corporate media talking heads who keep harping on about how America is our “friend” and that we must not do anything to jeopardize this as it will only hurt us. I don’t have the actual transcripts from today’s Hansard but the fix appears to be in to squash an investigation.

The only silver lining is that it was a Canadian airport, because in the US a Homelands Security team would have locked it down, barred air and ground access for hours, and put F-16s into the airspace overhead. Grewel this morning would be sitting in an ultra-secure environment, and probably deciding which “Welcome to Guantanamo” postcard to use to notify friends and family where he could be found.

It’s interesting how often CPC supporters talk about substantive issues, such as corruption of parliament, criminal code sections, etc., as a reason to justify opposing the Liberals. Whereas, Liberal supporters talk about things like bad handlers, bad spin, going off-message, etc, as reasons to oppose the CPC. It seems to me that in politics we should be supporting people who are likely to provide the best government, rather than people who are likely to provide the best marketing about why they should be elected.
Not sure who engineered the recent influx of ham-fisted Lib apologists and skirmishers over here to attempt to spin and obfuscate, but I suppose you should take it as a compliment of sorts, Kate.

It is one diversion after another.
First the accusations, then the denials, then selected tapes and transcripts, then he came/they came to us/me first, then, after a long wait, more tapes and transcripts, then accusations of tampering, then the explanation of transfer mistakes, then more accusations of tampering, then questions about credentials.
It does not matter any more. The Conservatives simply blew it. They have to get off this corruption kick. It was only a matter of time before they got caught in their own net.
The Grewal tapes are a sideshow to the real issue of what kind of government we want. Stephen Harper and the Blogging Tories should be talking about that. There is no point in prolonging the Grewal incident. It simply makes the Conservatives look bad.

Wistful digression: In my riding last time around, the NDP ran Monia Mazigh. I can’t tell you what a breath of fresh air her campaign was, with its focus on constituent concerns. Granted, the Muslim population in our riding is growing by leaps and bounds, so that particular constituency was the target of much of her messaging. And at the time, her only connection to traditional political machinations was to be victimized by them. But she is articulate and when _she_ said she wanted to serve in order to try to effect changes, you believed her.
And believing in someone is as much a function of marketing as it is of substance. That’s a sad truth in this brave new world where campaigns are deliberately aimed at no more than sound bites and image to make a Party’s best case. If you can’t grab people right off the bat with a credible “why”, they’re not even going to be in the room to hear you when you get around to your “what”.
The Harper Conservatives’ recent slogan: “Vote for us. We’re insane, but we’re not corrupt.” just doesn’t work for me, y’know?

I very seldom edit out comments. Generally it’s for reasons of profanity or excessive namecalling, and I’d say I”ve probably done it fewer than a dozen times since I started the blog.

Obviously, it’s pointless to try to drive the point home that I’ve already made — that I am angrily offended by the Liberals. As a matter of note, I’ve voted in every federal election since the late 1960s, and I never voted Liberal in my life. Not even for Trudeau.
It’s revealing to read that a lot of people here seem to conclude, in a lame parroting of George Bush, that if you’re not with us you’re obviously one of them.
Well — wrong.
What I will acknowledge is that I over-made my other point, that hitching one’s wagon to Germant Gurwal and what’s on those tapes is still shaping up to be one of the deadest horses the CPC can flog.
But as I said to Kate, after reading what I’ve read about the story, I’m beginnning to fear that Mr Gurwal might have genuinely experienced an episode which made my “insane” comments unkind and unfair. Think Svend Robinson.
So I unequivocally withdraw them, and apologize to anyone who was offended.
For the record, I just turned 53 so I get to be a grumpy old man whenever the hell I want. I also get paid to be a Media Analyst and in a typical day will cover about 40 Canadian dailies, 75 blogs, and a couple dozen national and regional radio / TV transcripts — usually two days late in those cases because the service we use only goes “fast” when we need something that isn’t already covered in the print media. So I’ve read a hell of a lot, probably more than a lot of people here, and not just the CBC’s transcripts as someone else here decided had to be the reason my opinion didn’t synch with the majority of people here.
And in all that material, I see no reason to change my belief that the Conservative Party of Canada harbours the most dismal collection of communicators since… well since the current Prime Minister’s Office, I guess.
Saying that doesn’t make me a Liberal, but one thing that bothers me is that some people here refuse to make any cognitive conclusion other than — “Criticizer of Conservative spin on a particular story = Liberal”.
Canada’s a lot bigger than that, folks. And the CPC has got to make its pitch with a lot more spin than “Liberals are bad”. But if you are someone who thinks that telling people that makes me a Liberal, well then you might want to take a long, hard look at that billboard on the wall labelled “problem”, because it’s a mirror.
I’ll continue to read and enjoy Small Dead Animals. But I’ll continue to shudder at those who demand the deletion of comments just because they disagree with them. Scroll back over the last 45-odd posts — see any other commentaries that might justifiably be considered offensive? Because I sure as hell do.
Demand their deletion? No way. It’s one of the things that makes the internet a great leveller — the freedom to speak your mind without editorial control. It’s living breathing proof that the simple acquisition of a computer and an internet connection puts the kneejerk whiner with something genuine to say on precisely the same plane as the high-priced policy wonk who pays more in taxes than you or I will take home in half a decade. Some of you probably have never known a life without the internet. I’ve watched it get born, grow and frankly, I love its freedoms.
If you don’t like a viewpoint, argue it. But don’t demand its deletion. I don’t need to tell you what company that puts you in.

Instead of attempting to discredit the “experts” who contend the tapes are edited, why not simply quote the “experts’ who have expressed the opinion that the tapes were never manipulated? Why not quote the “expert” hired by the Conservative Party? Why not quote the “expert” hired by the National Post or Sun Media? Gee, I wonder…
