The perennial question of defining Canadian identity may have finally been answered. Canadian identity is not, as commonly thought, our socialized health care system, the Trudeaupian mosaic of multiculturalism or even a fanaticism for hockey. At one time any one of those might have been true, but no more. No, we’ve moved well past that.
Today, our national purpose might best be described as “simply to serve as a warning to the United States”.
Via Neale News;
“Please be advised that effective immediately the Ontario region of the Correctional Service of Canada is no longer maintaining an inventory for parole officer applications from the general public.,” the Feb. 19 letter reads.
“Due to staffing resources we will continue to accept applications from aboriginal and visible-minority candidates only.”
CSC is committed to having a “skilled, diversified workforce reflective of Canadian society,” the letter continues, adding that future vacancies may be posted that are open to the “general public.”
The depressing part is that a good percentage of Canadians would think this is perfectly reasonable.
Last weekend a woman who was purchasing artwork from me at the dog show began to ask about “what it was like to live in Canada”. She confided that they had to sell their house while it was “still worth something” and leave before the country was completely destroyed. Her young son’s skills made him very attractive to the military and there was no doubt he’d be drafted. She was enthusiastic about our health care system, and wanted to live in a “more socialist” country.
Sometimes I wonder that there may be some force …. (fate?) …. that places people like myself in just the right place, at just the right time. For a moment I felt a twinge of guilt in the realization that my Canadian citizenship had been twisted into cruel bait for a hapless little moonbat – like savory French cheese perched temptingly in a leg hold trap.
In the end, I let her go – shaken, but unharmed. I’ve promised to only use my powers for good. But I think I detected a stagger in her walk as she made her way back to safety.

The Canadian Identity.
Kate at small dead animals laments the fact that the Canadian identity may be reduced to a demonstration of what not to do, and in her words “simply to serve as a warning to the United States”. I could try…
What draft???
She walked out of a Michael Moore documentary and into my life….
Did you close the sale? First things first.
Oops, she did buy.
TOO DIPLOMATIC
During my most recent trip to the US I was baffled to see what a European accent yielded in terms of a response. It ranged from the Were Sorry type of exclamation to instant Euro-celebrations (that deep envy of rich…
Just as long as you didn’t describe our dear ole’ nation as “half-assed”.
Hello Kate,
Regarding your blurb on the ‘white male need not apply’, I was in the RCMP building in the early 90’s, had some time to read the bullition board. On there was a posting notifying everyone that they had a five year supply of applications from caucasian males, no need for any more to apply. But they would still take applications from the usual ‘visible minorities, women, disabled,’ etc.
Being a white male, I have gotten used to this, but it still pisses me off. I have 3 boys coming up with 2 strikes against them already. White and Male.
I just want to know what you said to her! I’d love to have a copy of the kind of truth that would send some one who wanted her kid to grow up in a “more socialistic” nation to go away with a slight swagger! LOL Kate, we love ya!!!
Thanks for all your hard work and your heart!
What did you tell her all will like to know!
That draft stuff amazes me. The Pentagon doesn’t want a draft, Congress doesn;t want a draft, and in spite of what the left believes, Bush doesn’t want a draft.
That being said if something super big came up, like a war with China I think there’d likely be a draft the next day – no matter who was in the White House, no matter what was promised. Short of that, why would it happen when there’s no need and everybody is opposed?
Anyway, add me to the curious list of what you said to that woman.
It started with, “Be careful what you wish for”.
Re: No white males need apply. In high school during career day we used to have around 25-30 members from various professions come to our school and each student got to choose 3 of those people to go and meet in an open session about what it was like working in their chosen field. Being a red-blooded, white Canadian patriotic male I went to visit the RCMP session. A rather bitter officer said “If you’re a white male, don’t bother applying unless you’ll be happy being a constable for the rest of your life. The RCMP is looking for Aboriginals, women and visible minorities”. He then went on to describe the point system used in hiring and said that Aboriginals, women and vismin got lots of points, but they actually took points away if you were a white male! That was a real eye-opener for me and I joined the new Reform Party a year later!
I worked for a couple of summers as a student for the Ministry Of Consumer and Commercial Relations, all the positions that became available for full time staff had that same disclaimer that preferential treatment would be given to the usual “victims”.
I figured that this was how the fed libs were able to keep the immigration lines moving and bringing in more beholding voters .
“We need to let more Class 3 filing managers and administrative class 4 do nothings into the country because we can’t find enough people here in Ontario do do those jobs.”
Meanwhile I could’nt get my foot in the door of the ministry of Natural Resources after graduating college and University in Resources Management while doing an Honours Thesis that was tailored by some MNR beurofat.
Got an A and gave it to said bureufat and was thanked and given the door.
Just a side note
This is also the time of year that gov bureafats are scurrying around trying to spend all their budget money on ANYTHING “or they won’t get it back next year”
So if you’re selling it’s a great time to be in business.
Kate, I’m sure that some sort of Ministry Of needs some art!
Kate
posits that Canada’s purpose is now to serve as a “warning” to the U.S., and recounts a charming encounter with an addled American: Last weekend a woman who was purchasing artwork from me at the dog show began to ask…
Canada, let me offer you a trade. You take all of our huddled masses yearning for socialism. In return, send us all the people whom you deem too politically incorrect to employ to the fullest extent of their talents. You give your immigrants free health care; we’ll give ours work. I think we’ll both be happier for it.
As for the draft, I ran into a young man who subjected me to a rant on the draft. My reply to him was simple: “Just why do you think that any general in his right mind would want *you* in his army?”
