    1. I am not sure what the issue is. Some of those early nuns were not virgins. There is one in Quebec who was married and had a son before she entered the convent, and now she is a saint.

        1. Marie of the Incarnation, canonized by Pope Francis in 2014. The Popes are the ones who declare sainthood.

          1. “Popes are the ones who declare sainthood.”

Unlike Protestants who are all saints.

          2. To deplorable Sean,

Yes, there is such a process, and it used to be very stringent, whether you agree with it or not. I believe the standards have been much relaxed lately. Nevertheless, that is how the Catholic Church chooses her saints. You don’t have to care if you are not Catholic. Just like the electoral college is how the U.S. chooses her presidents. If you are not American, you don’t have to care, but you must still acknowledge her current President.

To scar, technically, the Catholic Church considers anyone who has attained heaven a saint. The acknowledged saints are the ones the Catholic church considers as having provided proof.

      1. This Guardian item isn’t actually about nuns. There has never been any injunction on “non-virgins” becoming nuns. I have known widows with grown children who have decided to become nuns.

I have also known widowers who have become priests. The vow of celibacy kicks in when you become a religious, not before.

      2. Trump Will Be Impeached By Friday! A news cycle.

Starting before Trump was inaugurated his enemies in the media and deep state have started their week with a “Trump will be impeached by Friday!” narrative. They focus on a Trump statement, action or event and tell the great unwashed why this is the worst thing ever and how it is grounds for Trump to be disqualified as President: to be impeached, by Friday if possible.

This happened again yesterday. Trump seems to know they will do this — duh — and he knows by doing what the great well of deep state experts tell the world cannot and should not be done by any sane President will produce a huge amount of media. Some call this trolling.

His enemies fall over themselves in the euphoria of what they imagine will be his downfall. Clearly, his press statements yesterday are seen in this light. In the meantime those that have the sense to fact check and see another side of the coin see the President making a very good point: the biased investigators didn’t bother to find HRCs server and asking why they didn’t!

The pattern has been that as the facts are filtered out of the fake news there is no reason to get rid of the President. In fact, often he has put his finger on a very important point. A point the deep state would rather not examine. By Friday the deep state realize they have been trolled — again but will never admit that. They move on to the next ‘unimagineable’, in their ever withering minds, faux pas of Trump.

So much winning by a very stable genius who happens to be President.

        What a news cycle!

        1. When you combine the 24/7 news cycle with hopelessly biased, unethical and incompetent “journalists,” these developments are not surprising. They hate Trump, seek to mercilessly destroy him, yet follow him around everywhere and hang on his every word and wink. He plays them again and again and they are too blinded by corruption, hatred and megalomania to see their own stupidity.

    2. Don’t they have to be virgins when they marry Christ, but don’t have to be faithful to him afterwards. If they require a physical male to have sex with, they’re now allowed that pleasure. No decree as to where they find these men. Or women. Based on the church that will rule with the anti-Christ in prophecy, expect more such shocks. When this pope was elected it was prophesied that this would all happen under his reign.

      1. Ah, an anti-Catholic crackpot.

Oh well, makes a change from some of the usual conspiracy-theory nonsense that appears in SDA.

        1. I don’t object to your crackpot comment, but I do take issue when people, without thinking, decide that anything that can be labeled a “conspiracy-theory” is also nonsense. Any thinking person knows that some conspiracies are true and some are not. A conspiracy theory emerges when there is a sinister situation for which we do not have all the answers. Often, we do not have all the answers because there has been a deliberate cover-up and frequently deliberate efforts to mislead people by putting forward false information. As a rule, those involved in a conspiracy do not broadcast their intentions.

          1. My comment was actually aimed at gellen, not you.

And “conspiracy-theory nonsense” is the term I use because all too often that’s what people stoop to when they wish to hammer disparate, coincidental events into an explanation that tidily fits their preconceived notions.

  1. I need some help from this group, as you are amazing researchers. My urban Vancouver strata has passed a bylaw (5 against 1) against smoking in my unit and on limited and common property that does not affect them (two outdoor places may affect them in a very minor way, but not my other balcony). They are all newbee Gen X,Y, Millenials and and I have been here since day 1, the last senior, now voted off the island (I actually never watched that show, but I guess I should have). I have capitulated and complied, but NOW they want to go after vaping, which is my tool for compliance with the forced rule. This is beyond the limit of my libertarian conservative limits! Of course, vaping is not legal for nicotine, as it is for medical pot. That said, my dr. did give me a note to say that vaping was part of my (forced) plan to quit smoking. Having been forced to quit smoking, I am smoking 1-5 cigs off-site (hard to find a place here in San Fran North that is legal) and doing a bit of vaping indoors. Unfortunately, because vaping is verbotten to the powers that be without ANY data at Health Canada, I need some powerful studies that say that 2nd hand vaping is a non-issue through walls of a condo. Please be aware that Vancouver, Health Canada and BC consider vaping to be something severely restricted like tobacco. Pot, oh they are all good with that! These kids probably all voted Liebral, but do not get the cognitive dissonance. Help me please to find studies that say that vaping simple Cig2Go things does not affect strata neighbours more than my BBQ!

Since then, laws have been flying. Who better to ask than your manufacturer.
Seriously if there is a new law, a favorable study, or a lawsuit, they know about it.

    2. Start with the famous Trudeau quote: the government does not belong in the bedrooms of the nation and go from there. Yes, I understand he was talking about sexual proclivities but like the Human Rights Commission, it can stretch its interpretation well beyond its immediate meaning.

      1. As Peter Brimelow eloquently stated, Trudeau Sr believed “there was no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation.”

Just in every other room in the house.” Now it seems the bedroom, or at least the bathroom, is of state concern again.

I really do find it totally beyond belief how even Republicans, such as House Speaker Paul Ryan, are coming out to criticize Trump saying Trump should have blasted Putin for interfering in the US election. He said, “There is no question that Russia interfered in our election and continues attempts to undermine democracy here and around the world.” Ryan So if the emails were NOT altered and the voting machines were not altered, added: “The president must appreciate that Russia is not our ally.”

“Ontario’s government cancels 758 Solar and Wind contracts

Someone finally found a way to reduce electricity bills with solar and wind contracts”

    “John Bennett

    July 16, 2018

I live in Ontario, just down the road from Toronto, where all this is playing out.

What amazes me is that there is seemingly very little opposition to these significant changes in provincial (state) energy policy. Our left-leaning public broadcaster/press is relatively even-handed in its coverage, highlighting both the government’s position and that of the solar/wind “industries”, but not particularly taking sides — as opposed to the US media which is so foaming-at-the-mouth opposed to anything Trump does that it has become farce.

Comments on the CBC’s website (equivalent of the ABC in Australia) are remarkably realistic about costs/benefits and generally showing significant support for this government’s policies. Certainly, the usual suspects show up, but there is far more educated commentary than I would have expected.

This new government was sworn in literally two weeks ago, and have already cancelled a carbon cap-and-trade agreement between Ontario and nearby states/provinces — and completely removed the “green” slush fund that had earmarked the hundreds of millions of dollars that would have been taken from consumers’ pockets. The government has also shown that they are willing to introduce legislation that will remove the ability for any affected companies to sue the government.

This government is serious, and they are moving quickly and decisively to reverse long-standing liberal (left-leaning) policies in a number of areas. It’s a breath of fresh air, and my dinner-party conversation takeaway (from friends who are global warming believers) is: that it hardly appears on their radar. And this is from people that have screamed “Melting glaciers! 97%! 450 ppm!” type things during our debates.

I think the government is reading things right: The electorate is tired of this stuff, and this is the first large jurisdiction that is tackling these policies head-on. Next up: A big fight with our federal government who has stated they will impose the carbon tax unilaterally on any province that refuses to do it itself.

There’s a federal election in 2019, and Ontario represents 40% of Canadian citizens. Interesting times…”

    1. Funny isn’t it, how common sense is inversely proportional to the # of Cdn $$ vanishing out of ones pocket.
Doug Ford is doing EXACTLY what his electorate wanted…Make Ontario Great Again.
      Next up, Rachel Notley…..

    2. I wonder if there is little fuss about cancelling the wind mill contracts, solar, etc. because these initiatives increasingly seem to have been a boondoggle. Getting rid of some of this stuff will save the left embarrassment later on. I don’t think they have actually given up on their global warming dictatorship, but are probably planning a new attack.

      1. I suspect there is no fuss being made because they don’t want to draw attention to the original contracts and give Ford the opportunity to explain why they were cancelled. The fact that they were extremely lucrative to cronies and donors, increase Ontario’s emissions, and if total life cycle emissions were calculated probably do not produce as much energy during their life as went into their construction (hence the need to be subsidized), these might all be a little too embarrassing for the liberals and their lackeys.

“REPORT: As Investment Flees Canada, Foreign Money Is Flowing Into The Trudeau Foundation

Once again the elites benefit at our expense.

It’s a great time to be involved in the Trudeau foundation.

In 2013, the Trudeau foundation recorded no foreign donations.

In 2014, they had $53,000 in foreign donations.

In 2015, they had $428,000 in foreign donations.

And in 2016, they had $535,000 in foreign donations.

But it’s a bad time to be a Canadian business looking for investment.

In 2015, $22.6 billion in investment entered Canada from the US. That fell to $14.4 billion in 2016, and $10.8 billion in 2017.

Meanwhile, $36.5 billion in investment left Canada for the US in 2015. That increased to $51.8 billion in 2016, and $60.5 billion in 2017.

In addition to the $60.5 billion in investment that left Canada for the US in 2017, another $40 billion left Canada for other countries.”

“Doug Ford to announce Commission of Inquiry into previous Liberal government’s spending

TORONTO – Ontario’s new Progressive Conservative government is expected to announce details today of an inquiry into the previous Liberal government’s spending.

The Canadian Press has learned that Premier Doug Ford will announce the Commission of Inquiry that will look at the provincial deficit and come up with ways to address it.

Ford is expected to name the person who will head the three-member panel.

He is also expected today to issue a request for proposals for a value-for-money audit of the government books.

The premier pledged that the commission of inquiry would build on the work of the province’s auditor general, who has been critical of government accounting standards that she said understate its deficits by billions.

Ford will make the announcements this afternoon with Finance Minister Vic Fedeli and Treasury Board President Peter Bethlenfalvy.”

  8. “Putin Summit May Prove to Be Trump’s Finest Hour

What? Did you just read that headline correctly?

Yes, you did. Writing it I assumed people’s heads would explode. It’s about as far as you can can get from today’s conventional wisdom (i.e. what David Gergen thinks).

Virtually every member of the smart set from Pelosi to McCain to some ninety-five percent of the media, including several cowards on Fox News, to, alas, Lindsey Graham (who should know better) are going out of their minds excoriating Trump for being soft on Putin, even for being “owned” by the neo-Soviet strongman.

John Brennan — once a communist himself, so he should know — accused Trump of treason.

Okay, time for that familiar cliche — the thought experiment. Suppose Trump had done the opposite, exactly what these people demanded — verbally and viciously assaulted Putin for all his totalitarian tropes from annexing the Crimea to humiliating John Podesta for being so dumb as to fall for a phishing attack (all right — I’ll be fair. For invading the computers of Democratic Party operatives, allegedly to elect Trump) and so forth?

What would that have accomplished? The obvious answer is zilch. Again the opposite would most likely have occurred. Things, already bad, would have been set back further. It’s human nature. You don’t have to be a personal acquaintance of Vladimir Putin to know that. You only have to be breathing.

But… but… then Trump shouldn’t have held the summit in the first place.”

    No matter how carefully crafted.

“Diplomacy 101 Versus Politics Writ Small

The high professional quality of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin’s performance at their Monday press conference in Helsinki contrasts sharply with the obloquy by which the bipartisan U.S. ruling class showcases its willful incompetence.

Though I voted for Trump, I’ve never been a fan of his and I am not one now. But, having taught diplomacy for many years, I would choose the Trump-Putin press conference as an exemplar of how these things should be done. Both spoke with the frankness and specificity of serious business. This performance rates an A+.

Both presidents started with the basic truth.”

Yes it’s not the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec, the fuss was discussed ad nauseam, then and the sewage was flushed anyways. The B.C. politicians have no shame. TIDES CANADA was not about to clean up the raw sewage in B.C . This situation is not a secret.

The OPEN WATER MARATHON SWIMMERS who train in the Georgia Strait in preparation for eventually attempting the English Channel take antibiotics before their swim. The swim from Sechelt to Nanaimo takes about 11 hours to complete and the swimmers are at risk of getting bit by jelly fish or whatever creatures. Open wounds would be too nasty and the swimmer might have to abandon their try. While swimming they are not allowed to touch the boat that follows them. They get their food and drink tossed to them. This record setting is serious business.

On June 25, 2016 Jessi Harewicz completed the Georgia Strait swim in 11 hours 20 minutes. On August 8, 2017 Jessi successfully completed the English Channel swim in 17 hours and 35 minutes. This is the Mount Everest of Open Water Marathon Swims. By the way, additionally, the swimmers are allowed only one cap, one suit, and one set of goggles. They must endure salty water, swift currents, body pain and vomiting. After Jessi completed the Channel, she said that “that was the least sick she’s been on any swim.”

So, in looking at Jessi’s record, and these tough conďitions she has endured including polluted waters, we would have to express our sincere Congratulations to Jessi Harewicz of Vancouver B.C. What a gal! Yeah Jessi!

I want to congratulate Richard, Jessi’s dad who works diligently with his daughter through thick and thin. I went to grade school and high school with Richard in Montreal. HEY YA RICHARD!
