The dumbest thing you’ll read today.
In a paper published Friday in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, researchers from Dartmouth College find that rising global temperatures have led to an increase in home runs in Major League Baseball games — particularly those played in non-domed stadiums — due to reduced air density.
More than 500 MLB home runs since 2010 can be attributed to “historical warming,” the authors write. “Several hundred additional home runs per season are projected due to future warming.”
I hope to God this is a prank.

Steroids, juiced-ball mfr’s., and a desperate-for-fans MLB could not be reached for comment.
Dang! Beat me to it, Kenji. Right out of the gate, 1st comment.
‘Roids and the juiced ball? Nahhhh. It’s Climate Change®, wot dunnit.
Sheesh! The only thing with less density than their imaginary air is the actual gray matter between those researchers’ ears.
I’d review their study, but I only have one life, and I’m not going to waste some of it reading their highly educated production of a totally moronic paper. Have they no shame?**
**Rhetorical, of course.
You want MY active theory on this latest global-warming-industrial-complex nonsense? Barroid Bonds has LOST ALL his HOF votes … he’s DONE … never to be in the HOF. EXCEPT. The HOF has “Committees” who can unilaterally declare Barroid has been barred because of racism or something. But! Even better than racism (which would be messy for MLB) … what if Barroid was hitting all those homers during “the hottest period of time in the planet’s history”? And what if that was “proven” to be due to climate change?
https://www.mlb.com/news/barry-bonds-falls-short-of-hall-of-fame-on-writers-ballot
What better way to get Barroid into the HOF? And next … they’ll claim that his head grew to twice its normal size due to a warming planet … LOL
Yeah Kenji. People have to be reminded from time to time why this guy isn’t in the HOF.

“No. 756 Just Junk Bonds.” … PERFECT!
So I guess they will drop this year as we freeze our collective asses off.
In a related story …

I’m thinking of writing a book, 1,000 Benefits of Climate Change. Now I can make that 1,001.
Kenji, some ball parks have lowered the fences in the outfield.
Party of Science! Yeah right!
You know those seas that were rising and would eventually drown us all. Take a gander at current day Venice and their famous canals, that have turned into sidewalks (a little slimy, but sidewalks none the less).
Orson – Is this the link you were thinking of?

Interesting. The Cottage Life channel has one of those documentaries on that. I’m surprised that the cbc did that article because it obviously defies the narrative for horseshit proliferation.
Many obvious contradictions in the corporate media these days. Much of it is quite blatantly contradictory.
I wouldn’t bet on it being the dumbest thing on the day, though.:-)
Billy – It’s all weather.
Will the record books be annotated to reflect this “fact”?
* … *
Whatever happened to “Correlation does not imply Causation?”
There are other factors that could explain this phenomenon. Kenji pointed out only a few of the possible “causations.”
In order to combat the current climate crisis, in which we will all be dead by 2030, ban all professional sports and restrict amateur sports to local areas in which the teams can walk or bicycle to the stadium.
Yes, if climate change is SO serious, let’s get serious about fighting it by shutting down all unnecessary activities for everyone, even the rich and famous.
I just heard that De Guvvermint intends to make one lane of the Trans-Canada highway a bicycle lane. That is a step in the right direction. I can’t wait to cycle to Winnipeg to visit my brother next February to celebrate his birthday.
Don. You will not visit your brother and be happy! See how that works.
Sad state of affairs when one can’t tell if it is a joke or real. Tax payer money well spent. sarc/on
If the air is less dense, and the gravitational constant hasn’t changed since I were a lad, wouldn’t the ball fall to Earth more rapidly with less dense air to support it? But of course they considered all that, right?
The gravitational constant assumes a vacuum for a reason, donchano.
The ball is not supported by the air. It is not flying. The air drags on it.
Air density is determined by altitude above sea level, sea level equivalent barometric pressure, and the air temperature. Nothing more. At higher altitudes the pressure is lower, and so is the temperature.
But the 1930s were way hotter than today, so the air was much less dense especially on low-pressure days, yet I do not recall longstanding home-run records from that era.
Just one more example of “scientists” desperately doubling down on their climate change myths. The gravy train is coming to an end soon, and there will be a lot of ruined careers and reputations. As always, my favorite website is the one that lists more than 50 years of failed climate predictions: https://cei.org/blog/wrong-again-50-years-of-failed-eco-pocalyptic-predictions/
Dan, why are pilots concerned with air temperature above the runway at takeoff? If it’s too hot, they can’t generate enough lift.
But your comment does further the point that these ‘scientists’ are nuckin’ futz and just making stuff up. I don’t think they considered any factors that would interfere with their predetermined conclusion that it’s all due to Climate Change®.
Oh, oh, and what… did they even analyze the layout of the ballpark and the prevailing winds and windspeed at the time of each homerun? What about the innings in which each homerun occurred? Afternoon or night game? I’ve got 25¢ that says they didn’t.
Reminds me of a study I might have done in 9th grade if I had thought of it. I can also imagine the C- I would have gotten with the note, “Try a little harder next time.”
It’s what you get when you have the answer to your thesis before you actually begin gathering data.
“The dumbest thing you’ll read today”
With sincere apologies to other dumb things that are made up from nothing.
They don’t even try to hide their propaganda anymore.
What makes you think it’s propaganda and not just idiocy. Those experts can’t be too bright if after 50 years of predicting climate doom they never had been right about anything. That flies in the face of the definition of expert in my opinion.
Ok then, stupid propaganda from stupid propagandists.
I do agree.
Bloomberg, Yahoo News, ABC, Toronto Sun, Boston Globe – So no, not a prank, just corporate media fear porn for stupid people. But the comments are delightful.
And just for shits and giggles, I’ll suspend reality today and pretend Dartmouth didn’t get millions from the National Science Foundation to research climate change and it’s impact. Any study countering the Global warming narrative and Callahan would be slinging fries.
Climate change must also be responsible for the increased driving distances recorded by golfers.
Image there are people our there who believe this sh^t.
The 7349 ft elevation of Mexico City mean most of the running records were broken at the 1968 Olympics. A degree of warming would not do the same thing. What kind of a retard comes up with such bullshit?
[spit] Prog retards.
scarP
” What kind of a retard comes up with such bullshit?” a very well educated one, don’t cha no?
What this shows is the complete worthlessness of “peer review”. This is clear evidence that you can get any piece of shit published under the label of “peer reviewed research” and that supposedly respectable publishers will take it seriously. Many years ago this list was published by John Brignell as a testimonial of all the useless crap that was attributed to global warming.
https://www.numberwatch.co.uk/warmlist.htm
I think David Frum topped that.
Reduced Air Density! R.A.D. Sounds very scientific.
too many funded researchers. they are tripping over each other ..
now they can research sex change at a genetic level and see how that turns out
OMG wait til the PGA hears this one . They think their balls are being crushed simply through technology and not climate change . Stand by for the walk back and required contrition .
“Climate changes causes more home runs in MLB
But it does not in AAA, Japan or NCAA D1”
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2023/04/08/how-climate-reductionism-is-itself-causing-bad-science/
Yes indeed, too many home runs is a major problem for humanity that justifies spending trillions of dollars and lowering the standard of living of 8 billion people.
It’s just the athletes (if you can call a baseball player that) are getting stronger and getting very technical. Just like hockey. Maurice Richard would not be able to compete against people like McDavid. Unless it was to kick his ass.
