No Science Behind Trudeau’s Plastics Ban

When you have a former drama teacher running a country, really bad policies are sure to result.  This is exemplified by Trudeau’s ridiculous virtue-signaling plastics ban:

“At its core, this is essentially an anti-fossil fuel agenda,” observes Green. “Because plastics are derived from the oil and gas industry – fossil fuels made solid, so to speak – they are considered the fruit of a poisoned tree by environmental groups. It is a holy issue.” — The Fraser Institute’s Kenneth Green

  1. The article says the goal is zero plastic waste by 2030. So are we going to be using glass IV bags and syringes in hospitals? What about the pill bottles? Is the medical industry exempt, and they’ll only bankrupt the restaurant industry?

  2. Other than fresh produce in the grocery aisles, everything – virtually everything – that we buy is encased in multiple layers of plastic. Most of these products come from other countries, who are not likely to change their packaging procedures to suit Prince CandySocks. So some forks are going to change anything?
Let’s pick on one or two items (plastic cutlery), ignore the massive amounts of plastics coming in from China and other places, and pretend that we are doing something of any consequence, other than virtue signaling and hurting one segment of the working class economy. Again.
What a joke. Optics only. Typical leftie thinking – obsess on one thing that you have labeled as bad, and destroy it, with no thought to real world consequences (or lack thereof), or the utter hypocrisy in targeting that one thing, while ignoring all others.
Much like protesting a pipeline (the safest and most energy efficient way to transport petroleum products) which necessitates more rail, truck, and ship transport. And driving and flying to said protest, using electronic communication delivered through plastic devices.
Ah, but we all know that plastic forks used at a food truck in Medicine Hat are what is killing the sea turtles.
About the only person I have more contempt for than JT is Steven Guilbeault. And even that varies from day to day. How did JT manage to find cabinet ministers even dumber and more ideologically encapsuled than Himself?

Howya gonna brush yer teeth? Hair?
      No mo spandex stretchy clothes
      Vehicle body/interior/covers/intakes/fluid containers are plastic
      Refrigerator interiors

    2. In the 50’s my Mom would wrap our sandwiches for school and my Dad’s work in wax paper. By the time lunch time came around, the crusts and bottom of the bread were hard as nails! Not the most desirable.
Then WOW along came plastic wrap and everything was fresh and ready to eat. Plastic was the largest addition to the house. Plastic everywhere made life so much easier to bear!!

  3. It’s all the people from Moose Jaw hurling their plastic straws into the oceans.
    Good arms, btw.

And the brainless still support him.

  4. L – Let’s add up a grocery cart with: meat wrapped in plastic. Bread wrapped in plastic. Yourgurt/milk/cheese all wrapped in plastic. condiments in plastic container, Tomatoes, avocados, berries, vegetables/fruits in plastic containers or placed in a plastic bag. By the
time you get to the till you’ve got a dozen or two dozen plastic single use containers. But
according to P.M. Trudeau, having a plastic bag or three to put them in is a “climate crisis”.
    This too stupid for words.

Neurotics build castles in the sky. Psychotics try to live in them. But only a truly narcissistic psychopath tries to force others live in them. Bedlam is the name of a psychiatric ward
where the patients run the asylum.

Declare the P.M.O. a psychiatric asylum, and Canadians get to return to a normal life.
We could have a new country, one with sane responsible leaders. Who would treat identity
politics and the sky is falling politics with the contempt both deserve.

    1. Yea…But much of this BS on plastic is focused on the little things…no?

Yet the Big Box Stores (Costco, WalMart, Best Buy etc.), with their massive thick heavy clear PLASTIC clamshell Packaging is untouched. Pretty sure one of those packages equals at least 500 plastic grocery bags…or 100 plastic straws no.??

Money talks and Bullshit walks: Pay off the right folks and you get a pass. PERIOD.
Librano’s doing their thing as they always have.

  5. Well, for one thing: Oil does not come from “Fossils”. It is not a “Fossil Fuel”. Having worked in numerous capacities in the Energy industry, you can talk to any number of Chemical/Process Engineers, Geologists, Gas Drill techs, etc, and we can tell you that Oil has nothing to do with “organic” origins. Heck even Aerospace Engineers know that; the largest Oil Deposits they’ve ever found are NOT on Earth…

….it’s in the rest of the Solar System – the biggest Source of Crude Oil is on the surface of Titan, one of Jupiter’s Moons.

Even “Organic Chemists” know the “Fossil Fuel” myth is impossible after getting a refresher on Physics and a few realities in the Oil Industry:

Oil has been found at over twice the depths of any Fossil layer – the deeper you go, the more Oil as opposed to Water.

How can that be? Considering Water is heavier than Oil, and Oil migrates to the surface ABOVE Water. Anybody who’s been in a kitchen understands this. Ever see an Oil slick? How does Oil “migrate” beneath the Water underground? How does Oil “Drop” underneath “Fossils” it supposedly originates from, not to mention ABOVE the Water that should form the same “decayed animals and plants”?

    It doesn’t.

    It CAN’T.

In fact, we use these fundamental Physical properties in part for “Fracking” and Gas Drilling: the Water injection forces the Oil…..UP….as the Water goes DOWN.

Morever: if there is no “Water” generated from these supposed “Fossils”, then where does all the Oxygen from these supposed decayed “plants and animals” go?

Everything from plants to your own body mass is composed of over 60% in Oxygen atoms, retaining a large amount of that Oxygen mass as it becomes buried beneath the surface as a corpse, as everything from sugars to cellulose.

Oil contains 1% Oxygen, most of it emulsified water. So where’s the rest of that Oxygen? (and don’t get us started about the rest of the elements missing from “Fossil Fuels” if it’s supposedly generated from “Plants and animals”)

The Truth is there has NEVER been any evidence that Oil, Natural Gas, Anthracite or Bituminous Coal, etc. comes from “decayed plants” or “Dinosaurs” or “Fossils”. To the degree that there are any PLAUSIBLE/VIABLE hypothesis, there is far more convincing evidence and logic in Oil having formed from an Abiotic process or as a “primordial” origin from the formation of the Earth – just as with MOST of the Solar system’s Carbohydrate chains, such as the Oil found on Titan or Natural gas near the surface of Jupiter.

And no…there isn’t any evidence of there having EVER been “Dinosaurs”, or “Plants”, or any other Life on Jupiter, Titan, Saturn, etc, to magically “become Oil” through some mythical “Fossilization” process (and a LOT of “Magical thinking”).

    1. On an Aerospace note:

With any future Manned-mission to Mars, we’ll need to bring a Drilling Rig and Drill techs in order to extract Mars’ Crude Oil – which will be used for innumerable applications and materials for Mars’ colonization (not for Energy, as Energy can be handled using the Natural gas in Mars’ atmosphere, of course), as it’s far more efficient to use Martian-sourced Oil-based materials to build the infrastructure locally than to lug that infrastructure out of the Earth’s gravity and transport/land it on Mars.

Michael Bay’s Armageddon was more realistic than we originally gave it credit for.

      1. EDIT: “Hydrocarbon”, NOT “Carbohydrate”.

I’m going to blame this and other “mis-speaking” on early-morning hunger-pangs.

    2. the biggest Source of Crude Oil is on the surface of Titan

Ethane and methane are not crude oil. Put the bong down.

      1. Daniel Ream

        Uh NO:

It’s not just Ethane and Methane (and I have never used drugs; working around Hundreds of Millions in heavy equipment with toxic/flammable/pressurized hazmat precludes any desire to start).

And YES, it is Crude Oil on Titan.

I’m not sure if you’re gas-lighting me (no pun intended), or using the “Global Cooling/Warming/Change” globalist misdirection by the Media, or if you’re just another poor sap listening to self-described “Scientists” in said Media, while having no personal access to a Professional community of Workers, Techs, and Engineers in the Aeronautics and Oil industry – where this stuff makes the rounds at the Water Coolers and HVAC rooms and Canteens, etc

(Actually, “Made”, this was an old argument in the 70s, and got settled in the 80s).

“Crude Oil” as the term is used in industries associated with Oil (which I guess, technically, is “Every industry”) in my experience is dependent on who and where you’re hearing it from: A worker on the Rig words it differently for you, as opposed to a Chemical Engineer at the CDU, as opposed to the Tech at the Pipeline, as opposed to the Electrical Engineer managing the HDPC plasticization and manufacturing processes, etc.

All are valid in their own respects, because they all follow some general understandings – just with different language regarding specificity of their particular job in the logistical stream….

So “Generally”, I’ve taken the term “Crude Oil” multiple ways (most people in whatever industry do too since we interact with multiple disciplines, each having their own lingo):

Whether you’re talking about the the “Crude Oil” definition regarding its lack of distillation (An Unrefined Collection of Hydrocarbons for an atmosphere at “sea-level”). In this sense, the term “Crude Oil” is like “Naphtha” and has more to do with its relative position in the stream and as a precursor for a desired end-product – a range of POSSIBLE chemicals defined by the END-product – rather than a defined composition of chemicals to make a range of possible products…and like “Naphtha”, “Crude Oil” in this sense doesn’t have to be a viscous liquid – as that is simply the physical state to make it easier to distribute and transport – as opposed to chemical composition. Pipeline techs and engineers know this relationship and its pitfalls all too well which is one reason why pipelines are designed and built in such a seemingly “winding” manner – it’s not “haphazard”, it’s by design. Incidentally, that illustrates Titan’s definition of “Crude Oil” perfectly, because the majority of Hydrocarbon families on Titan are SOLID)…

…Or whether you’re talking about the definition regarding the different classifications of the Hydrocarbon Chains and Cyclic molecules
(Again, the types found on Titan would be considered composites of “Crude Oil” on Earth, it’s just that many of the hydrocarbons on Titan are in SOLID form and cannot dissolve into the liquid due to Titan’s temperature/pressure – which is the common Jewish-Media gas-lighting method for claiming “It’s all natural gas” – even though the these people are speaking out of both sides of their mouths: The Methane and Ethane that are on Titan are supposed to be “Natural Gas” …except they’re mostly LIQUID on Titan, but we’ll call it “Natural Gas anyway, because it’s still the same chemical. Meanwhile, Hydrocarbons typically part of “Crude Oil” on Earth…. are “not Crude Oil” because they’re in SOLID form on Titan? Even though they’re still the SAME chemical just as they did with “Ethane and Methane is natural gas”, it’s still not “Crude Oil”? Really? Bullshit. Stop playing word games)…

…Or whether you’re talking about the definition that typically differentiates “Natural Gas” from “Crude Oil”
(there is more than just “Natural gas”. As defined in the Energy Industry at multiple levels on Earth, Napthalene, Benzene, Propylene, etc, are all confirmed on Titan and are regarded within Hydrocarbon families typically found in “Crude Oil” on Earth. “Natural gas” hydrocarbons like Methane and Ethane are ALSO regarded as being “Crude Oil” btw when dissolved and even pressure-liquefied in the unrefined Hydrocarbon “Soup” – again, “Crude Oil” is a general term to encompass ALL ” Hydrocarbon soups”…however, it does NOT go the other way around in Industry parlance: Hydrocarbons that are regarded as part of “Crude Oil” like Napthalene, Benzene, Propylene, etc, do NOT get called “Natural Gas” in our Industry on Earth…OR Titan, for that matter. Of course, in terms of practical chemistry/engineering and application, this is somewhat besides the point – but hey, YOU’RE the one who insisted on the “Ethane and Methane Natural Gas” standard, so might as well debunk it on YOUR terms)…

        Etc, etc, etc.

Nobody in any serious Engineering or Energy community is fooled tbh, not even the people chasing funding opportunities, the Marxists running their age-old scams, whilst the same Jewish bankers from Fink to Yellen to Klain (who’s almost gleefully running Biden’s brain since Klain publicly contravenes Biden on a seemingly daily basis – for all practical purposes, Klain is President instead of Biden, and I don’t know which would be worse. Sheesh, the Jews used to be more discrete) rely on Neophytes to garner power, and use their ESG system on us.

It doesn’t matter how you want to play semantic games:

There is indeed “Crude Oil” on Titan.

End of discussion…and this discussion in our community ended decades ago, btw – we’re just getting more confirmation as time goes on (and more obfuscation from Media and politicized “Scientists”. As an aside, NO profesisonal actually calls himself a “Scientist”; we identify ourselves primarily by VERY specific field titles and system specializations). That doesn’t mean Neophytes like you can’t challenge it – you’re encouraged to challenge and question and get your own confirmation.

But as for me and a lot of people I know, we stopped having arguments about “whether” there was Crude Oil around the Solar System on planets like Titan decades ago. The standards and definitions of this debate were defined probably before you were born…and you do NOT get to “Redefine” what “Crude Oil” and every other word just because you have prideful notions about “Fossil Fuels” and “Global Cooling” (which Environmentalists/Communists/Jews have similarly changed the names and language to things like “Global Warming”, “Climate Change”, “Peak Oil”, etc, etc, etc, in order to cover their tracks)

Like Crude Oil from everywhere else, Titan’s Crude Oil has its own characteristics. “Crude Oil”, being a very general term, it encompasses Ranges of UNREFINED Petrochemical “Soups” which are indexed for local standardization, rather than any world-wide (let alone “universal”) uniform composition…West Texas Crude is very different in composition and concentrations from Saudi Arabian Heavy Crude, which is different from Siberian Light Crude, which is different from Bakken Sweet Crude etc, etc, etc, with carying degrees of disolved minerals, sediment, water, sulfur, etc, etc, etc. Titanic Light Crude has its own unique characteristics given its beyond-Earth nature (“Light Crude” IF that’s “all” it is – again, a LOT of information is “Unavailable” or worse “Missing”, but unlike you, we don’t claim the “lack of existence”, we just say “I don’t know anything further”. Your claim that “it’s NOT Crude Oil” isn’t even born of speculation, it’s born of “I don’t know, so I’ll make shit up”. As for my speculation, Titanic Crude is probably diverse in its composition between various locations and depths, just as you see on Earth, and even different seasons in Titan’s cycle around Saturn – and while that is pretty safe speculation, it’s speculation nonetheless).

Again, at this point, it’s not about “whether” there is Crude Oil on Titan – heck, that was a given with Earth orbital-based sensors and relatively primitive fly-by probes decades ago (it’s not that straight-forward, but for the purposes of your “Natural gas” misnomer, it’s good enough).

At this point, it’s about “what kind” of Crude Oil regarding the different molar concentrations of each particular Hydrocarbon Family (which have different values of energy content and applications), and their state (suitability and feasibility for extraction, transport and processing). In the meantime, the industry watchers are just mulling around their existence as an academic matter to speculate on what ELSE might be under the “lighter” Hydrocarbons exposed to extra-terrestrial conditions using deductive and inductive reasoning along with a few minor controlled experiments.

        1. Edit: Eh, that was tiring, and I didn’t even bother proof-reading. I’m not responding to this gain – it sucks that Neophytes feel comfortable making single-line, snarky quips with no substance, while I feel compelled to write contextualized explanations..

  6. The future Plastics Ban will be as effective as the Windmills and Solar Panels that are powering Canada today.

Speaking of plastics, oil, and gas? Someone in Britain should get together a dozen or so people to go to the homes of the “Stop Oil” fanatics and help them in divesting themselves of all oil based and petrochemical products. They will be doing all of those dedicated progressive protesters a favor by assisting them in their moral stand by getting rid of all those nasty petrochemicals. Ridding themselves of their cars, bicycles, and every product that uses synthetic rubber; synthetic fabric clothes, carpets, rugs, bedding, and furniture. There are also plastic utensils like toothbrushes and storage containers. Don’t forget the other evil petrochemical product containing items like refrigerators, stoves, and microwaves. Help them realize an oil free today and they can lead Britain to a wonderful tomorrow!

  7. No more latex condoms people.
That should help grow the abortion industry from the hardon out…

    Happy Friday!

  8. Can I just bitch for a second about the loss of plastic bags at stores? Remember to bring your own bags in to the grocery store or hardware store as you walk in, or you’ll have to also buy ‘reusable’ bags for several bucks at the store or do without. Need to wrap some meat in plastic so it doesn’t leak? Hope it fits in a vegetable department plastic bag.

I’m disgusted by policies made by people who clearly never do any grocery shopping. PP should vow to reverse these bans. They are pointless virtue signalling and make everyones lives slightly more inconvenient.

  9. “make everyones lives DECIDEDLY more inconvenient.”
Y’all don’t need to pick out individual examples of objects we use containing plastic, its harder to find ones that don’t-

No clothes, no phones, no computers at all, no containers for anything around the house, no vehicles at all.. and I mean no aircraft, buses, trains, boats, trucks or cars, no paints on your house.. so its back to the 1800s for everyone.

Its time we called these clowns out, the world has not miraculously become cleaner for banning plastic bags, the same as it hasn’t become more intelligent from taking lead out of petrol.

  10. From the piece…
“manufacturers tried to convince Ottawa to approve a thicker, reusable plastic shopping bag made from 40 percent recycled material under its ban policy. Barkel calls this “Bag 125” because it can survive 125 uses; once it breaks, it can be recycled back into another plastic bag. Trend-setting California allows this kind of bag within its single-use plastic bag ban. Such is the Liberal government’s animosity towards plastic, however, that even this sensible proposal was vetoed. For similar reasons, Ottawa has also rejected compostable plastic bags. The federal position is apparently that all plastic is bad. Full stop. As a result, Barkel says, “Canada is forcing consumers to use fabric bags that come from China and are 100 percent non-recyclable. When they break, you’ll have to put them in a landfill.”

    What? Is Trudeau’s one-upping California?
    No.
    Can’t be.

And… those rejected compostable plastic bags?
That’s what is approved for our kitchen composting, is that now banned too?

    Right.

    Bugs.

    1. Well, when I go to Co-op (Grocery Store in Calgary), every 6 months or so, I’ll purchase their Bio Degradable grocery Bags…30-40 at a time. Take em home and use em in our little container for food scraps n such.

They have “handles” – where the store bought ones don’t We also keep our Plastic bags from the Dollar store to transport said bio degradable ones to our garbage enclosure…they often leak (bio-degradable right.?).

  11. As I recall, it was another Turdeau that years back banned the use of paper bags and replaced them with plastic bags in order to save the trees.

  12. In case you’re wondering where the official “science numbers” came from … .https://achemistinlangley.net/2021/03/21/on-the-proposed-canadian-plastics-bans-part-1-how-the-government-created-useful-facts-for-its-scary-headlines/

… and you’ll still be wondering! He is my favourite Net Zero eco-scientist. Electricity is only passed on through the copper wires — use only unwrapped copper wire without the plastic wrapping.

His latest is … Understanding the role of, and opportunities for, Canadian fossil fuels in our net zero future … start investing, it’s a money maker.

  13. Is it too much to ask for cheap biodegradable packaging ffs? Until then plastic should be used but as a bridging technology. It could be 10 years. Could be 60 years until we get off of plastic.

    Same for oil and gas.

I work in oil and gas related industries so I have personal skin in this game.
