    1. joetote, the 2,835,533 death count for 2020 was the CDC’s provisional estimate as of December 22, 2020. Two things:

      (1) Between then and the end of 2020, one can expect somewhere around 70,000-80,000 more deaths from all causes (based on average daily counts to date), putting the total for the year at over 3 million, and

      (2) The CDC’s final estimate of total deaths in the US in 2020 will not be confirmed for some time (e.g., the 2019 final count of 2,854,838 registered deaths was only published by the CDC in December 2020). They don’t announce the previous year’s vital stats figures on January 1st for a reason — it takes a while for individual death certificates to be (a) filed at the state level and (b) compiled by the CDC into the National Vital Statistics System.

      The CDC’s 2020 provisional estimate will therefore most certainly surpass 2019’s count. This grim reality is, of course, nothing to celebrate, but neither should annual death count data be misrepresented in an attempt to argue that the COVID-19 pandemic is overblown.

        When will people learn to properly analyze statistics … and not just assume and imply all manner of nonsense from broad stats without detail or context?

          Some were, definitely — one indicator is an increase in the number of people dying at home who subsequently tested negative for the virus; another is an increase in opioid-related deaths — but far from all. One credible estimate I’ve seen is that 1 in 3 excess deaths in the US over the spring and summer was due to non-COVID-related avoidance/delay in seeking medical care or mental distress, leaving about 2 in 3 excess deaths directly due to a COVID-19 infection. Maybe it’s closer to 50-50 — nobody really knows with certainty — but that still leaves tens of thousands of excess American deaths directly attributable to COVID.

          As for this latter category, I know you’ll invoke the fact that most of these victims to date have underlying medical conditions, and that those are the real causes of death even if the SARS-Cov-2 virus is co-present. That’s probably true in some cases, but many of the deaths listing COVID-19 as cause of death are actually less ambiguous than you might want to believe. These are clinical in-patients, with confirmed positive PCR tests, dying of acute respiratory distress, organ failure, etc., after spending days or weeks fighting a losing battle against the virus. Post-mortems typically indicate massive tissue damage to key organs (lungs, heart, etc.) that were not present upon admission to hospital. These are not cases of people dying WITH COVID-19.

    2. More importantly, the age adjusted death rate in 2019 was LESS than in 2018. Think of this as providing “Dry Timber” for COVID-19. If one looks at the three year average it is in line with the experience in the previous decade. 2019 was an outlier tha 2020 fixed.

Nobody wants the truth, even Doug here does not want the truth. the average daily death toll in America was about 8,000 a day from all causes, this of course should go up with the increase in population, it did not. All deaths are virus related no matter what the cause and no one is preforming autopsies to find the cause of death they are just writing covid as the cause and they are liars.

  3. This actually SUPPORTS the argument that COVID-19 is unlike — more contagious, more virulent, and more serious than — seasonal influenza, etc. of years’ past.

    NHS bed occupancy is nearing capacity (80-90% in some regions) EVEN WITH LOCKDOWN — it’s not hard to understand how much worse the situation would be without public health measures in place. And yes, lockdown measures do have an effect, as evidenced by this winter’s flu season trending significantly lower than average. Yet COVID-19 continues to spread, which speaks to how much more infectious this novel virus is compared to influenza.

My local NHS hospital has quietly closed half of it’s wards like many others in the UK so they can scream we are overwhelmed take it from me the NHS is always in crisis never has enough rescources on a budget of £140billion a year and rising and all their employees are caring and sharing and compassionate and it is all bollox.

        As someone who has worked in a ER for quite sometime. Most ER run at 90% all the time.

        1. Most ERs are filled with people using it as an outpatient clinic for everything from the common cold to a baby that can’t sleep. Why, because most do not have a family doctor or a clinic open 24/7 in the area. On any given week day or weekend where I live the ERs are always over loaded and a person can sit there for over 8 hours before they can be seen by a doctor. This has not changed with the flu . Same old same old.

    5. All evidence says this is a load of BS. They stopped testing asymptomatic people in China and the epidemic was over in April. PCR tests, which aren’t designed to be diagnostic tools, keep the narrative going in the West.

    The ruled could not care less to find out, if some do, they probably won’t believe it.

        Where I come from, we have learned to read between the lines. The journalists could go only so far with the news and opinion, though they knew how to write to get the essence out, while apparently sucking up to the communist power.

        Find it funny when the majority of so called ‘journalists’ in North America, if they want to say something ever remotely resembling favorable to Trump, they will write a whole preamble how bad low life he is to cover their asses.

  6. Anybody else notice health officials and the media freely use ” the U.K variant ” to describe the new Covid,,, but nobody is allowed to say Covid-19 is the Chinese Flu.

    They’re not say Covid-19.2 or Covid-19.3, or Covid-20,,, but so easily say “the U.K. variant”

    I would demand they find a few broken small businesses in their constituencies and donate a large portion of their salaries to help pay mortgages and employees..

  12. Let’s think outside the box here for a second. A lot of countries have socialized medical care, which means the government is on the hook for medical costs. We also know that all levels of government are deeply in debt. The radio, TV news, the newspapers all claim that the powers that be don’t want the hospitals to be “overwhelmed” by a sickness that is 99.9+% survivable (and in most cases doesn’t require hospitalization because one can’t tell the difference between it and the common cold). Perhaps, it’s the government’s way of shutting down beds and/or medical services (therefore, spending less money) without publicly acknowledging these services are being shut down or withheld in order to save money. (Remember, socialized medicine is run by “death panels” of government bureaucrats)
