  1. I was taking part in a province-wide amateur radio net during last year’s observation of Butts’s Magic 60 Minutes, as I recall. It was interesting to see how many of the hams who checked in, including me, boasted about ignoring it.
Sure enough, though, someone checked in and was appalled at our collective lack of foresight. I don’t remember what he said, but it was along the lines of “What about the future generations?”
Oh, well, there’s no pleasing everybody, is there?

  3. Wait, that AR-15 was concealed in a backpack, and that is why the school wants clear backpacks now?
Seriously, no one seems to address the real problems associated with that shooting:
    1. Long term problems
1a. The FBI had warned about the shooter two years ago, nothing was done. His name was not entered into the background check database for guns.
1b. The (now disgraced) school resource officer wanted to have him institutionalized. Nothing was done because the school district believed in Obama’s plea for leniency for minority miscreants.
1c. That was why the shooter could legally buy the gun. The law does provide for safeguards. They were just ignored.
    2. Immediate problems
Five, count them, five law enforcement officers were at the school at the time of the shooting. NONE of them entered the room where it took place.
2a. The aforementioned school resource officer stood outside the door with his gun drawn during the shooting. But he never went in. He has resigned.
2b. The deputy assigned to patrol the school apparently missed the whole thing. He slept in the squad car through the whole episode, until wakened up by a student. No, really. He has been suspended pending investigation.
2c. Three, count them, deputies dispatched to the school went into the prescribed stance for a siege. They crouched behind the squad car with guns drawn, and remained there the whole time. The Broward county sheriff praised them afterwards for correctly following procedures.
2d. Two SWAT team officers heard about the shooting and rushed to the school. They went into the room after the shooter had stopped shooting. They did apprehend him. They have been suspended for leaving their post without authorization.
There were so many failures by people in authority. Correct response by just one of them might have stopped, or at least minimized the killing. The tragic consequence of all that incompetence is sickeningly macabre. But the school thinks clear plastic bags is how to solve the problem.

  4. Clear backpacks?
They would tear just from the stitching. Bet they don’t exist.
The parents will be buying new ones every month. If I were a student there I’d use a clear garbage bag! Yes a new one every day. This I gotta see!

  5. So many things that could have and should have worked, didn’t. Perhaps that’s why they think something that makes no sense, will.
Faulty logic, of course. I think it’s the other way round. A society so disengaged from reality, and so enraptured by its artificial problems and issues, must be populated with people who will screw up all the things that could have worked.

“Anyway, California thought there might have been some kind of conspiracy by oil companies to hide secrets about global warming. We also saw that secrets of the kind hoped for by climate activists weren’t really possible.
But Judge William Alsup didn’t know that and so ordered both sides to present to him a tutorial in the physics of externally heated fluids flowing over a rotating sphere. The class as scheduled to last a mere four hours. But, hey, what’s so hard? Activists, politicians, celebrities, even reporters know all about this simple subject.

Aiding his honor were two friend-of-the-court briefs, one of which was led by Viscount Monckton of Brenchley, Willie Soon, David Legates, Yours Truly, and others. The other was from scientists William Happer, Steven E. Koonin, and Richard S. Lindzen.
Happer and the others provided a lovely summary.
    1. The climate is always changing; changes like those of the past half-century are common in the geologic record, driven by powerful natural phenomena
    2. Human influences on the climate are a small (1%) perturbation to natural energy flows
    3. It is not possible to tell how much of the modest recent warming can be ascribed to human influences
    4. There have been no detrimental changes observed in the most salient climate variables and today’s projections of future changes are highly uncertain
Interested readers can explore the reasoning behind this four simple and true points at their leisure. Share them with every concerned citizen.
Monckton’s (my) group had two straightforward points.”

Mom: Put the bread in the toaster, there.

    Mom: It pops up automatically.
    A few minutes later…

One day this teenage daughter will have a baby.

back in the 80s I taught @ a private college (long gone, wonder why…) that got hit wit’ a virus on da notwerk. having some 15 yrs experience I attempted to outline a systematic method of expunging the infection and preventing a recurrence.
the official response included putting a silver marker X on the brand spankin’ new 3 1/2″ floppy disks, thus the ‘clean’ designation.
when I pointed out that the moment any said floppy got popped into the drive slot, it’s ‘virus clear’ status became uncertain. I got ignored.
one day I scanned their mcafee ‘anti-virus’ floppy with my norton right in front of the class and . . . . it found a virus!! provided some wry humour that day.
my constant picking apart mgmt policy regarding security issues got me sacked.
but, like I say, they NO LONGER EXIST.

  16. I also think the clear backpacks are silly. If you wanted to smuggle a gun in you could (in theory) just wrap it up in a sweater. Many girls will still have big purses. I also think they are not very durable.

“Australia Defies ‘Crazy Lefties’, Confirms Promise to Aid White Minority South African Farmers
Australia’s Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has dismissed claims of racism over his plan to resettle South African white minority farmers in Australia, saying he ignores the confected outrage “from some of the crazy lefties at the Guardian and Huffington Post.”
Mr. Dutton faced a backlash after he first announced the farmers needed “special attention” because of the epidemic of violence engulfing them.
As Breitbart News reported, Mr. Dutton noted Australia has refugee, humanitarian and other visa programs which have the “potential to help some of these people”. He said he had asked his department to look at the options “because from what I have seen they do do need help from a civilised country like ours”.”

  20. FAIRFIELD (CBS) – There was a security breach at Travis Air Force Base Wednesday night when a car loaded with propane tanks crashed through a gate and an explosion tore through the vehicle.
Military personnel ran up to the burning car that exploded in flame after breaching the security gates at the base.
In a video posted on an Air Force forum on Facebook, firefighters are seen attempting to put out the flames.
Law enforcement sources say the car carried propane tanks and the driver deliberately ignited the fire. He died inside the car which drove off the road into a ditch. There are no reports of shots fired during the incident. The driver has been identified by law enforcement but not been named. Since he ignited himself investigators are treating this as an act of terrorism.
