“We just published the 2018 Canadian Electrical Code. The whole Code for $60, not CSA’s $180.” There are also a limited number of free copies available from Members of Parliament. Word is getting out. |

Hail to the free market of ideas. Stop the copyright of Canadian Law by special interest groups like the CSA. Hold the government to account.
Every 3-Years … I am forced to purchase a NEW California Building Code … for $300,00 (US)
https://www.buildersbooksource.com/cgi-bin/booksite/25790.html
And that CBC does NOT include:
Electrical Code
Plumbing Code
Fire Code
Green Building Code
California Residential Code
Title-24 Energy Code
California Wildfire Code
California Landscape Code (water use restrictions)
Each of which costs another $ 175.00 (some are an “affordable” $65.00)
gosh this made my day
Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Not only will they make a ton of cash, because who in their right mind will pay triple the price for no reason, even better, this cash cow is being diverted from the government! And finally, it is a reckoning for the original mission of making the laws of the land free to everyone.
Why is it called part one? According the the blurb, the whole code is in there. What will be part two?
Probably the The Addendum….if its anything like ASME…?
I spit out my coffee when I saw this. Absolutely loving this!!! Well done sir.
There are two possible solutions; leave California/exit that business, or black market building without buying any books.
SDA gets action. Kudos to SDA for it’s help to Mr. Knight. I did not read about this issue anywhere else.
If I’m counting right, I see a grand total of five MPs. That leaves how many (useless) Conservative MPs in Ottawa who won’t lift a finger against CSA’s corruption?
The CEC Part 1 is for the installation of electrical installations in Canada. Part 2 is for manufacturing.
CSA, are you seeing this? They are usurping your entitlements, to which you are entitled. Sue them! Go on, get after ’em, what could possibly go wrong?
Even if you just need it to prop up the corner of the couch, buy one.
Yayyyyy!
They need to list it on Amazon.
Well, I understand electrical codes to be a Provincial responsibility. What Federal codes are there? For transmission lines that cross provincial boundaries?
“What Federal codes are there?”
For places like Banff and for foreign imports that have electrical components.
Knight in shining BX
the provincial codes take the CEC, and make some amendments to it, which in theory is supposed to make it more safe…. but in most cases, just means that you have to figure out what you have to do depending where you are….
it also means that it usually takes an extra year to get the provincial code after the CEC comes out.
I ended up ordering the CEC this year, because the company would pay for it so that we have a reference to ignore when we wire things according to our separate standards, which probably haven’t been updated in a while.
Excellent news.
what’s an electrical COD???
Congratulations on your win!!!
I still have a copy of the 4th edition, Electrical Code Simplified Sask Book 1 from P.S. Knight 1996.
I read it twice before beginning electrical work on my house over 20 years ago.
It was a valuable resource. I could not of passed inspection without it.
“There are also a limited number of free copies available from Members of Parliament.”
I called the Calgary office of one of the MPs listed in the article. He has only received a single copy.
Update … I am now told that they have disbursed the copies that were received.
The Canadian Electrical Code is a national standard but it is adopted by the provinces with provincial addenda.
Completely agree that CSA is a bureaucratic and arrogant organization, but somebody has to pay CSA for the work that goes into the code. They will just lobby for more tax dollars to make up for any lost sales.
