Hah.

What do you know, a provincial Liberal gov’t with some spine.
Drivers likely won’t feel province’s 2.33-cent-per-litre tax, since same revenue is merely being redirected

New Brunswickers will start paying a 2.33-cent-per-litre carbon tax in April, but it’s unlikely they will notice.
That’s because the Brian Gallant government won’t add that to existing taxes already paid at the pump, but will shift that amount from the existing 15.5-cent-per litre gas tax.
That means no net increase on the price of gas.

Of note, though, this inventive budgeting measure does nothing for manufacturing or home-heating tax relief.

  1. While that move does not seem to accord with the intent of the federal legislation it does meet the letter of the law. Such a simple finesse, it makes me wonder why other governments who purport to oppose the carbon tax, eg. Manitoba, wouldn’t have considered it. I guess the additional revenue was just too tempting.

  2. Nothing to do with spine – it’s just that there is an election in 2019, and the Liberals here are in enough trouble without trying to impose a foolish so-called carbon tax. Their official position on “carbon pollution” is actually as extreme as one can get.
    Tony.

  3. I wouldn’t call it spine exactly. the NB tax rates are the highest in the country – almost 54% top rate. Any more increases and their would be rebellion.

  4. The New Brunswick Liberal Party will do exactly what the Nova Scotia Liberal Party did last year.
The Carbon Tax will make its appearance next year AFTER the provincial election. Lying Liberals. Big surprise.
Doesn’t matter. Leader of the PC’s is a long time Irving employee.
The same PC’s that signed a 25 year forestry deal with Irving when they were in power.
Of course, that particular disadvantageous deal pales when compared to the millstone of being Canada’s only bilingual province.
Irreversible don’t ya know and courtesy of those same PCs.
Who needs Liberals when you have CINOs.

  5. The Irving Empire owns all the media in NB that matters like 1850’s Alabama.. 6th largest landowner in North America. 3rd wealthiest family in Canada.
Imagine CBC being the good guy.
Corporations pay a measly $272 million in taxes on a $9.5 Billion budget. Corporate welfare probably exceeds that. Who knows. NB is as transparent as the Petticodiac River. WE sell our trees at a loss and so on. Nobody cares or can do anything.
Regular NBers vie with Quebec for the highest personal tax rates in North America.
The Liberal in NB is Dominic Leblanc aka the Codfather, son of Pierre’s Gov.Gen Romeo and babysitter to Justin. Best friends with the Irvings coincidentally. Nary a negative word about Liberals in NB.
    An extremely common Canadian disease.
Maybe the new Independent Senators will save us.

  6. do they think we are all fools. 10.46 cents a gallon will be added to the cost of gas. There is a added tax. Are we all idiots? I take that back, WE ARE ALL IDIOTS.

  7. Harper made sure fish world got a federal ship building contract. The fish worlders thanked the conservatives by voting in the libranos – all 40 seats.
Kinda like having a venomous snake for a pet. You feed it and look after it but….
