Who came up with that name?
But before the United Conservative Party can challenge the NDP, it must get its own house in order. And that means writing policies, choosing an interim leader and not letting the divisions show too much in what is expected to be a fierce leadership contest, culminating in an Oct. 28 vote.
Still, the longer-term challenge will be ensuring that the party can do more than just criticize Ms. Notley’s NDP government.
Well, and not being recaptured by the Liberals who got them into this mess.

Unless the new leader has the guts and honesty to clearly and unequivocally call out this climate change horseshit for the great scam that it is, then he\she isn’t worth voting for.

I don’t mind the name. Perhaps just plain old “Conservative” would be more difficult for the Leftists to play with.
My concern is that Alberta will follow the example of Ontario, the dung heap of Communism.
Remember that after the 5 years of the Bob Rae experiment, Ontario brought in a landslide conservative government under the great Mike Harris. It took him 2 terms, 8 years, to even begin to undo the damage of the Leftists.
He did a commendable job.
Problem was that during the years of the Socialist Rae, many Ontarians became accustomed to the perceived freebies and handouts and the reliable Media went after Harris’ “austerity” and the takers outnumbered the makers.
We’ve now had 15 years of Liberal Leftism that would make Bob Rae seem like a raging right winger.
I fear that once the people of Alberta have tasted the Pablum of the Socialists handouts, the Alberta electorate will return to the Left after the correction that the United Conservatives will bring about.
There can be no doubt that Kenney and company will win a massive majority. It is after they fix things that concerns me.
I pray that I am wrong.
All the best, Alberta.
Why do conservatives assume there will be some kind of ‘come to Jesus moment’ within those who have voted progressive? Their conviction is reinforced daily by the MSM, their teachers and most likely their families. Sit down and have a talk with a progressive. I suggest the majority either have a job isolated from economic reality, to a degree, or are receiving more government benefits than they pay in, or are youth who have no basis for judging other than the environment they were raised. Combine all this with social media that can isolate ‘believers’ into self confirming societies.
Changing the political direction of Canada and the USA will require challenging the forces described above. IMHO the conservative movement has not done so and has not even began. If there is no philosophical conviction behind so many of these ‘conservative’ parties then they will likely be exposed, at best, but just as likely will corrupt the movement further in the minds they are trying to convert.
Progressives will continue on, as they will, until it doesn’t work anymore. Conservatives seem to think that they will turn the tide at that point. I am sure Harper thought the same. What is different this time is debt, both public and family. The majority of people live their lives not acknowledging the fiscal risk they engage in. The conservative movement does almost nothing to explain that risk or the ultimate consequences.
The first thing to, is ash can that whole stupid “big tent” idea. There is small, limited government, and there is everything else. The two cannot mix; any mixture is big government, full stop. When they realize that there are people who simply cannot be allowed to be members, when they realize that there is already an active infiltration and undermining campaign against them, maybe they are at step one of having an actual small, limited government movement.
If they aren’t already on counter intelligence and dismissing the red double agents, they are already done.
“Well, and not being recaptured by the Liberals who got them in this mess.” That also sums it up for me. This is what appears to have happened to the Ontario PC Party what with Brown embracing the socialist carbon tax fraud, etc. and to a large extent in the Federal Conservative Party with reformers being sidelined.
Frank Q. is right with, “I fear that once the people of Alberta have tasted the Pablum of the Socialists handouts,…”. Look at Venezuela.
CT is right by saying, “The conservative movement does almost nothing to explain that risk or the ultimate consequences.” Look at Venezuela.
The promise of socialist utopian dressed up as a free lunch is always so enticing.
I think the way to go, is to not even offer Alberta a choice. Give Alberta an ultimatum, set some conditions that when they are met, only then you will run candidates against the NDP. Instead of asking people to vote for you, get out of the way instead. Pour more gravy on the biscuit wheels, speed that train toward the wall socialism is building.
Others have said it, socialism is an addiction, or mental illness, or thought virus. This new “conservative” party can be enablers, or they can wait for people to make the decisions to get clean and start helping themselves. Maybe that is the basis of all the problems in our country; enablers. People who want to help others continue their self destructive choices, instead of slapping them up side their heads and making them stop.
The simple fact is, if there are enough people in Alberta, or Canada, that want to go full Venezuela, the rest of us can’t stop them. All we can do is get out of their way, and let them rush over the cliff by themselves.
In Alberta there are basically three ways to become premier. Notley won as a protest vote swamped Prentice and his foolish ‘need for a mandate’. Manning, Getty, Special Ed and the Redfraud won on previous leaders reputation. Aberhart, Lougheed and Klein won on personal charisma and vision. (Prentice doesn’t count since he never won a general election. When Kenny first entered Alberta politics I did not want to even hear from him. However he almost single handedly brought the PCs and the Wildrose together. He has thus replaced Brian Jean as my choice for leader of the new party.
Wait and see. So far, only a few of the old “Party of Connections” people have resigned, which is great, but there are too many old familiar names hanging around waiting for another turn at the trough. If enough of those go, then I will be much more confident about the new party.
They got a bunch of floor crossers to turn tail, now they’ve absorbed the rest. A change of name seems to fool a lot of people. May as well have the ndp for all the difference it will make.
Leftward cultural drift will not be deterred by 50% to 60% of Albertans unifying within a single non-NDP Party. Politicians need popular support for election and most of that comes from the expansive mushy middle thus any hope of limited government in Alberta is slight and fleeting. Slowing the decline is all that the unified Conservatives can offer. That’s about as inspiring as Scheer’s CPC or a return to BC’s Liberals.
Until the institutional left is taken on and made unpopular enjoy the decline.
party names. anyone remember the ‘Conservative Reform Alliance Party’?
think about it.
call kanadian konservatives the CHURCH PARTY, and just grab the flush handles as you go down the shitter
The let it crash and burn idea is great and all except that you have to live through it like everyone else. That’s why I’m not a fan of the let socialism reach it’s end conclusion. You first comrade. I’d rather stop it.
Why are so many on here so desperate to find something to complain about with the unification?
It was almost comedy to listen to the media try to find something/someone negative about the 95+% referendum result. Now their slant is that the leadership contest will rend the new party apart.
A good leadership contest is exactly what is needed now. Lots of interest and media interest, new members joining, and the associated cash infusion. A coronation wouldn’t have been nearly as good.
Better name then the really old NEW Democratic Party 🙂
Then would it not be the duty of those who forsee the coming fiscal collapse, to accelerate its coming?
Like lancing a boil, you know it is gonna hurt but the short term pain prevents long term agony.
So we may as well form the Hairy Big Spending Party and vote Never Done Paying.
I see no conservatives in politics, naturally those that are are erased by our Presstitutes, ommission being their favourite lying technique
But in this PC environment, it is deemed “Hate Speech ” to actually outline the state of our Kleptocracy.
To demonstrate that career parasites are just that, is of course, a breech of their human rights.
So conservatives are silenced beautifully, by the very laws and order they respect.
As an inerim name, how about the Not Notley Consertives
I’m not sure policy matters at this point. Just ending the vote splitting will gain a majority.
“May as well have the ndp for all the difference it will make.”
In order to appear to be different they should call themselves NsDaP.
“Until the institutional left is taken on and made unpopular enjoy the decline.” And it is not just in the fiscal realm.
Exactly, but there is no major movement afoot anywhere. Isolated efforts at best. The Friedrich Nietzsche self-destructive philosophy has penetrated and taken over almost everywhere. The application of his view that western civilization should be destroyed is being applied everywhere. Hence the liberal fascination with allowing Islam to destroy western civilization and our university professors teaching our kids that everything white is evil.
Then would it not be the duty of those who foresee the coming fiscal collapse, to accelerate its coming?
What’s wrong with that strategy is that as the welfare state becomes increasingly bankrupt, its client groups will encourage increased looting and thuggery, making targets of anyone with any assets that can be pried from their barely warm hands. An intact middle class would not politically tolerate such abuse but a swollen underclass would demand it. Once the underclass reaches sufficient numbers there is no return. This was Obama’s goal, to grow the underclass beyond the point of no return. It’s one reason progressives hate the Second Amendment.
Greens are out to destroy prosperity and yet green support is highest in the upper middle class. The NDP is now cloaked in green. People need to see that.
I don’t have THE answer but I do know that prosperity of the middle class is the only thing keeping us from joining Venezuela.
This party in the long run will be nothing but a red tory cesspool.
Why do the politicians always make their conservatism conditional with the hyphenated party name?
They can’t just be conservatives they have to modify it by being progressive-conservative.
This has gone on too long. The minute they hyphenate the party name its a white flag to any and all that the adhom attacks will be tolerated and the party has an unwritten rule that anyone that dares to “show up to riot” will be told to sit down shut up lest the media and punditry be offended.
That is my point, tis my belief we are already past the point of no return, the underclass has reached more than sufficient numbers..
Obama just wanted to turn the USA into Canada.
Canada is done, the takers out vote the makers by 60/40.
And “Free Dope for All” will be the next utopian promise.
Why would I keep bailing to keep this ship of state afloat?
The Officers and passengers keep partying like there is no problem & no tomorrow.
I know it is going down and I was born a Rat.
My guess is that in time – say five years – the name will be changed to the Conservative Party of Alberta. As I understand it that me is currently owned by the wildrose party so the new party cannot begin with it.
Let us see now.
Lougheed was one of a kind, conservative with certain finesse to please and common sense. The only time that he got lost when he agreed to the airhead’s father to abandon opposition to the NEP.
Getty was just a guy in the right place and the right time, took a ride on Lougheed’s wave.
Klein told everybody openly, completely without fear what was he going to do. Many of those that voted for him were taken aback when he did precisely that. Never backed down, told the public unions to go eat grass.
After Klein, things went south, special ED was special all right. Got voted into the leadership by public unions, specifically, teachers and nurses, though primarily the former.
Those two unions are the same that got into position of leadership of the progressives special Ed, Redford and to some extend Prentice.
Since the socialist extremists that are running the province now could not get elected for dog catchers, as the saying goes, the crowd that wanted them in power changed the tactics and as another saying goes, if you can’t beat them, join them.
The Wild Rose came and were teacher and nurses union free, they had a good agenda, for all practical purposes, non-socialist, until Smith blinked and lost her balance there for a bit, everything collapsed.
As mentioned before the progressives and Wild Rose got more votes together in every riding then the socialist extremists. If you want to call it vote splitting go ahead, it’s a catchy phrase. People simply had three choices.
As also mentioned before, Jean is a nice guy, with a good head, the sense though is that he is not fired up or as Klein would say “fire in the belly”, not forceful enough in his personality to demolish the socialist extremists.
Kenny, sort of been there done that, has, or at least had the program that by sheer force of person instituted good and sensible changes to the emigration system that the airhead reversed.
There does not seem to be a natural born leader with a backbone and the stamina to stick to the plan by good communication, good will and something they call power of personality.
Jean does have two of those, he seriously needs the last one.
Kenny dabbles in all three, though that is not enough.
They all seem to collapse on the idea of those lgbtabcd. Rather than having a position they fold at first sign of media onslaught. To say to the socialist extremists something to the effect that it is not government role to tell those young people how they should do sex, who they should like and who not they just wish it would go away. This is a sign of weakness, the socialist get them on that one subject every time.
The person that gets to be the leader should stop politicking and get on with the real life stuff. Most people, even disinterested will get it.
Politicking obfuscate yer intentions.
So there you have it in a nutshell as another saying goes.
