  1. I think all sports fans will get a kick out of this letter written to the Chicago Tribune….
    No matter which side you are on in the matter of renaming the Washington Redskins, this is funny.
    Here is an e-mail sent to Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune after an article he published concerning a name change for the Washington Redskins.
    Dear Mr. Page: I agree with our Native American population. I am highly insulted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward.
    Let’s ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns.
    The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of militant Blacks from the 60’s alive. Gone. It’s offensive to us white folk.
    The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men’s lives.
    I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres.
    Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates!
    Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children.
    The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children.
    The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our children.
    The Milwaukee Brewers. Well, that goes without saying. Wrong message to our children.
    So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the do-nothing Congress loves.
    As a diehard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the Oregon State women’s athletic teams to something other than “the Beavers.” (especially when they play Southern California. Do we really want the Trojans sticking it to the Beavers???)
    I always love your articles and I generally agree with them. As for the Redskins name, I would suggest they change the name to the “Foreskins” to better represent their community, paying tribute to the dickheads in Congress.

  8. Those were moose, but the point is well taken. The driver is an idiot. People who hit moose often end-up dead. Moose have long legs, and the car usually goes under them and the moose body flattens the windshield and kills the occupants.

  11. So Pat – Trump and his team are being roundly branded as thin skinned about the reports their crowds were sparse and they support this with pictures from the Lincoln memorial . Of course there is no supporting evidence as to when these photos were taken , but that does not stop our media from running them several times an hour. And I am sure that the people who supplied them from the parks service are strong Trump supporters so I just can’t understand why they would shut down their Twitter feed. Funny, there isn’t much mention of the reports of people who wished to attend and support the inoguration who were prevented from doing so by protesters . Seems to me that may be a tad un democratic and anti freedom , but I am proudly very deplorable and all though I have reservations about Trump , I am beginning to like him more by the minute.

    Canada has been running an interesting experiment for the last half century, provincial welfare. Wealthier provinces have to donate much of their capital to less wealthy provinces in the form of “Equalization Payments”.
    Western Canada has typically been the wealthy capitalistic, resource-rich region of the country, where costly social programs and high welfare spending has plagued the east.
    A divide is afoot in Canada. Folks in the west feel their money is being syphoned out of their hands for no good reason and propping up anti-capitalistic governments in the east. Many feel there is an unfair wealth drain happening that needs to stop.

The egregious travesty that the article fails to mention is that huge revenues Quebec receives from selling electricity to the USofA are not factored into the equalization payments while the revenues from selling western Canadian oil to the UsofA are. Prime Ministers from Quebec have ensured that this inequality continues. Harper failed to correct this even though his government had the majority to do it. The Conservatives have lost support of their membership because of this, and will likely never recover any meaningful power.
    Western Canada must separate to survive.

  26. I don’t consider Justin Trudeau as a legitimate Prime Minister either, as he only got 39.5% of the popular vote. But we still have him in Ottawa. Donald Trump received 42% of the popular vote, and he’s the prez. It’s the way the cards fall.!!
    When Hillary got wind of Bill being blown in the Oval Office, she should have filed for divorce!! Today, SHE would be the prez!!
    As for the CTV running a poll on this issue, I see they’re also under Hillary’s spell!! Maybe they’re working for the CBC!!

  31. Excellent article from the Spectator. It’s short and to the point like something Rex Murphy would write. It’s not actually about politics or DT, but rather about what happens in a society when people over-react to ‘political correctness’ and self righteously choose to label and categorize rather than seek to understand. It’s also about what happens to long-term friendships when someone decides “we are quite far separated on a number of issues”.

  37. Wrong percentage on Trump’s win – he won 57% , Hillary won 43%. The US uses the electoral college, to ensure the winner has wide regional support. It is a sound system, and prevents presidential candidates from simply racking up large majorities in heavily populated states, and ignoring the interests of lesser states.
