Springtime For Erdogan

In addition to the 62 children being held in prison;

More than 50,000 civil servants — including some 3,000 judges and prosecutors — who are suspected of supporting Fethullah Gülen, the US-based cleric accused of masterminding the plot, have been arrested or suspended in the past week. Tens of thousands of teachers have seen their licenses revoked, while academics have been barred from leaving the country.
On Saturday morning, Turkey issued its first decree under emergency law, extending the maximum length of pre-charge detention from four to 30 days. More than 1,000 private schools and some 1,200 associations and foundations will be shut down.
Turkish ministers have repeatedly denied that the state of emergency would have any impact on people’s rights and freedoms.

Also: Allegations of torture.

  1. And no Western leader including nominee Trump says anything or they make noises supporting this fascist regime destroying this former model of a secular state.

  2. Full blown Sunni takeover. Could not keep Egypt so they shifted to Turkey. Has the Muslim Brotherhood stink all over it.

  3. No doubt a touch of confirmation bias on the part of “colonialista”. Now that the end game in Syria is in question and the formation of the Caliphate in Syria and Iraq is in decline and the Kurdistan issue is a direct threat to Syria, Iraq and Turkey, a “realignment” of self interest is taking place.
I lack a crystal ball, but strongly suspect the international community is now far less likely to sanction Israel’s hoped for annexation of the Golan and its oil with the stabilization of the Syrian national government. I don’t have a dog in the fight, but if one asserts the Russia is wrong in Crimea (referendum or not, history or not), how can the occupation/annexation of the Golan and exploitation of its oil be right?

  4. The problem with any news originating from homegrown sources in Turkey, Middle East, the Balkans, etc., is that it is even less credible than the bullshit regularly fed to us by our own MSM. And that’s pretty bad.
So it’s really hard to tell fact from fiction. There’s no doubt that Erdogan is a power-hungry thug, but we also know the lengths our own media took to portray Omar Khadr as a helpless child victim of war.
Until there is independent verification, just assume that everyone on all sides is lying to you for their own reasons.

  5. My wife and I travelled throughout Turkey in May of 2014 and found it quite fascinating. However, the future was being written even then. Our tour guide, in his early thirties and married to a university professor, lamented the path on which his nation was embarked.
Like most of his generation raised in a secular society, he was deeply fearful of the rising Islamist tide. He would point to a statue of Attaturk in a city square, warning that in five years time they would all be razed so that no vestige of western democracy would be there to remind Turks of what they were losing.
Unlike in the past when burkas were outlawed, they were becoming commonplace, especially in the larger cities. In some places, such as the city of Kona, we were warned regarding the Islamic conservatism and told to be very discreet in our own dress and that picture taking of people was inadvisable.
Glad we went then as I’d certainly not recommend it today.

  6. Bingo, major political realignments are in play.
Obama’s decision to withdraw the politically stabilizing force of U.S. troops out of Iraq, to support the rise of the M.B. in Egypt, to destabilize Libya, to allow the Caliphate of the Islamic State to establish itself with global influence, as per orthodox Islamic scripture, to allow Iran access to 150 billion dollars to finance global jihad and it’s nuclear ambitions.
Turkey’s Erdogan wants to make his move now before a Donald Trump Presidency comes on the scene and forces a reassessment of who should be in NATO and why.
Within two weeks of being elected Pres. Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Historians will see that as the irony of the 21st century.

  7. If Erdogan didn’t organize this supposed coup just to have an excuse to totally seize control and arrest any that were opposed to his plans for an Islamic state then he has certainly taken advantage of the event to seize that control. I wonder if Obama will co-operate and arrest the imam that Erdogan is accusing of starting everything. He could use the same cell of that evil videographer who caused Benghazi.
