A semi-retired Electrician came to our home to do some minor electrical work and was actually close to my age, so two old guys never miss an opportunity to chat about “the day”.
He had a pronounced European accent and when I mentioned this as being from the “Netherlands” he smiled and said it was Uruguan. I raised the eyebrow and he said after the Second World War his family wanted to emigrrate from Europe. They at the time lived in a part of Germany which is now in Poland and started the long trek towards North America. His Father had waited in a Danish refugee camp for over two years before his wife and the children could join him.
The waited another priod of time and apparently South America agreed to accept refugees. There were six ships sent from South America destined for Paraguay and the Family agreed to go. However one of the ships was then redirected to Uruguay and without considering who wanted to go where the ship for his family ended up in the different Country of Uruguay.
The story moves along with years in Uruguay, where the familiy paid back the Governments for the transportation and all costs of assimilation. This was a similar situation for the Father’s subsequent perod of time in the U.S.A. He was a an Engineer by profession and able to move up in the line.. The Wife and children ended up in Canada and the costs fro this transport and costs to live were all charged back for repayment.
I wonder if the mad rush out of the Middle-East instead of remaining there would be quite so attractive if there were a cost to make the move. This i believe has always been the situation for emigrees to Canada. Except for outright donations by individuals and the opportunity to do do the back breaking work of developing land any money expended to enable the move was paid back. Not sure where the Government Agencies have the Authority to casually take Tax-payer money as part of the Bureaucracy where-with-all and spend it without passing legislation. This in addition to establishing several years of examination before accepting the Emigrees.

The Syrian refugees that are destined for Canada have similarly been waiting in UNHCR refugee camps, many for upwards of 3 years.

It’s no different for the Syrian refugees. Canada, like all refugee-accepting countries, has always provided some settlement assistance (temp housing, basic household supplies, income support for the first year), but transportation costs, along with the costs of obtaining travel docs and medical certifications, are borne by the refugees themselves. Canada might advance them funds to pay for these through the Immigration Loans Program, but that money has to be repaid. We even charge them interest.
Yes, stereotypes do represent groups, not individuals. But we’re dealing with a group here, aren’t we?

That sounds like bullshit – why have they budgeted $1.5 billion for something that should cost us nothing?
We don’t really charge them too much interest though, we subsidise a lower interest rate, it’s about 1/2 the interest cost of a new mortgage (typically the “best rate”) … The Liberals want refugees to get used to the idea of having someone else subsidise them, it’s the Liberal way.
Will the next batch of refugees from a country that islam has completely ruined have to pay their costs too? This precedent sucks for taxpayers.

Getting back to Kate’s post title … there’s no reason the women and children are the safer option. Women and children, and dare I say it, “developmentally impaired” children have been used by islam to forward its cause via suicide bombers in Gaza and other terrorist strongholds for many years.
While the Israeli government taught those developmentally impaired young adults to pack lunches for soldiers, gave them a reason for being, outside of working at bottle sorting / recycling depots as is done in Canada.

What evidence is there that the massive amounts of North African and Middle Eastern migrants (read: Muslim) integrate and ultimately contribute positively to the Western countries in which they now reside? One can do a quick search online to discover how costly- financially, socially and politically- these migrants are to the countries that once welcomed them.
Prior to the election, the Tories promised to resettle North Korean refugees stranded in southeast Asia.
North Koreans have very legitimate reasons for not wanting to return to North Korea and will be forcibly returned by China for which PM Trulander has a fondness. They have a veritable right of return to South Korea which is where most are headed.
Like Japan, South Korea doesn’t muck about with political correctness. If they don’t like Mohammad and his four cousin-wives, out they go. South Korea also vets EVERYONE who comes in because it is not unheard of that North Korean spies and other fakers enter the country under the guise of refugees.
If determined that they are not spies or any drain to society, North Koreans remain and are trained and provided for by the South Korean taxpayer for a limited time.

As to what will happen to the North Korean refugees the Tories promised to help, well, they are in limbo but I seriously doubt Trudeau will let them into Canada or get South Korea to take them in. They will, therefore, be sent back to North Korea and to their deaths in one of the camps the Kim dynasty denies exists.
I don’t remember Trudeau being appalled at the deaths of Yazidi children who were chased into the desert by ISIS or girls being raped and he called prioritisng Christians “disgusting”. I doubt he gives a sh– about victims of China’s vassal state, any one of whom would be a more welcome and productive member of Canadian society than the migrants Trudeau is forcing up us at great cost.
So- where is the Canadian taxpayers’ return for these voters blocks Trudeau is bringing in?

Balderdash! My family and my wife’s family came here in 1926 and 1923, as well as many of their acquaintances, and none never got a dime in assistance of any sort from the government. In fact they had to be sponsored by a responsible established family already here, and who had to find a home for them and employment. Furthermore, their passage to Canada was on a credit to CP Steamship Line, and had to repaid.
