  1. From Jonah Golberg’s “Have You Read “The Federalist Papers of American Conservatism”?

The whole point of seeking to conserve that which is good and just must begin with a sense of gratitude. Yuval Levin of the Ethics and Public Policy Center offered one of my favorite meditations on conservatism when he said: “To my mind, conservatism is gratitude. Conservatives tend to begin from gratitude for what is good and what works in our society and then strive to build on it, while liberals tend to begin from outrage at what is bad and broken and seek to uproot it.”

    The whole thing here.

  2. Btw, I don’t know if anyone here has seen the new Conservative ad (“You’ll pay for it”), but they’ve really taken the gloves off. It’s serious. I like it.

  3. Steve Paikin on TVO has been bending over backwards in the last couple of weeks to vilify the Conservative government. (I expect he is taking his orders from Ms. Wynne). So tonight it was the same old Harper “muzzling” scientists complaint. One guest was a disgruntled scientist. It is not hard to find individuals who are not happy with any changes made by the Conservatives, but what they have to say is invariably one-sided. Another of the guests was a woman from “Evidence for Democracy” — another rabid anti-Conservative group. Now they are holding events, and they are supported by the Unions. So could their “events” not count as 3rd party advertising — I would contend they are a lobby group. I am also very curious about where their funding is from. Ever since someone from the UN “climate change” group indicated that they would be getting rid of Harper (this from a Lord Monckton video), I am very interested in where the anti-Harper money is coming from.

  4. Just got a survey from Ipsos-Reid about the elections. Had to quit before finishing it.
First they ask normal questions that you can expect. Then comes an insidious question that you can’t answer if you vote for conservatives.
The question had of course two parts rather than tree, it was this:
Who is the best alternative to the conservatives?
    1. Thomas Mulcair and the NDP
    2. Trudeau and the Liberal
There is no alternative of none or something to the effect that you actually oppose the two low lifes.
    Well, what do you think?
Now you can perhaps understand why those that support conservatives will not finish the survey.

  5. Shame its about 2 weeks too late.
Very disappointed in the entire CPC campaign and ads and pressers. A definite lack of hard hitting attacks, yes, attacks, against Le Dauphin.
Its hard to say but, this campaign by PMSH reminds me of John McCain’s horrible, failed run against Da Wun.
Being a gentleman during a Life and Death battle never works out well.

  6. “I am very interested in where the anti-Harper money is coming from. ”
Having just returned from my mail box, I can tell you that it comes from taxpayers.
    What’s that you say, taxpayers?
Yep. I’m holding in my hand a full colour, two sided 5″x11″ pamphlet titled “Let’s rewrite the book for better opportunities for British Columbians” while the reverse says, “Close the book on the Harper Conservatives.” The pamphlet doesn’t say vote NDP, but the colour blend on the front is orange, as is the highlighted text on the reverse.
In VERY small text at the bottom of the back side it says, “Authorized by the Federation of Post Secondary Educators of B.C.”
So you (and I) pay their very generous salary and extensive benefits while they donate a portion to their “Federation” (read: union) who then work hard to bite the hand that feeds.
All while indoctrinating our kids. My daughter is one of them, a social worker with a Masters degree. Today we had a discussion about an article in the NYT, critical of re-cycling programs. I pointed out that a program that generated $900K in re-cycled materials had cost $6 million to operate. I suggested that more concrete “good” could be done by diverting to a landfill and utilizing the other $5.1 million in more critical areas. Her response of course is that we should do it all: re-cycle, regardless of the cost while borrowing or taxing the other $5.1M for other “good works”.
Where oh where, did we go wrong?

  7. So the only good thing about Toronto is The Blue Jays. They won tonight.
The TO Star tweeted a picture of ‘Jose Bautista grinning from ear to ear.’..only it was a guy named Martin.
And why should we trust anything from TOStar??
Any of you tweeters have the picture? I saw it on FB …but can’t get the copy here.

  8. Dan, I’ve always respected you as a commenter, but I don’t think it’s even slightly reasonable to conclude that 1) this election has been lost, or 2) that the Conservatives would be guaranteed to win every election in perpetuity if they only had the good sense to exclusively run campaign ads that meet your or my approval.
No one has won the election yet, and I wish more Conservatives would understand that. The usual suspects in the media, who are in the tank for the Liberals — it couldn’t possibly be more clear — have been touting recent polls showing the Liberals in the lead, a lot more than they were touting very recent (a week or so ago) polls showing the Conservatives with a sizable lead. There’s a reason for that: the Conservatives have historically been the choice of those who are more likely to get out and vote, while the Liberals are the favourites of younger voters who tend as a group not to vote. If, by hammering on choice polls, they can get conservatives to suppress their own vote because of negativity caused by these polls — the ones that don’t actually count — they’ve won a big part of the battle.
If even one in twenty conservatives who voted for the CPC in the last election take the Eeyore approach and decide not to vote this time on the basis that “it’s all over, there’s no point, it’s hopeless”, we’re certain to have a sighing, lisping, eye-rolling celebrity as PM.
There’s no good reason for anyone to tell the more pessimistic fellow conservatives that it’s all over.
It’s not over. Trudeau hasn’t won a damned thing yet.
We’ll see what happens on the 19th, but you don’t give up because you perceive that you’re down a goal.

  9. EBD: RE: Dan, I’ve always respected you as a commenter, but I don’t think it’s even slightly reasonable to conclude that 1) this election has been lost, or 2) that the Conservatives would be guaranteed to win every election in perpetuity if they only had the good sense to exclusively run campaign ads that meet your or my approval.
I think all Conservatives need to go on the comments section of commie CTV and CBC and stop them dead in their tracks! And NO this election has not been lost.

  10. Opps–I wasn’t quite done!
I also believe that Harper is much higher in the polls than the CTV, CBC and other pollsters are reporting.

  11. Not given up EBD, but disappointed nonetheless in the campaign. It makes sense to me, what PMSH and the CPC has said, I have no quibble with that, its just they have not complemented that strategy with the messy, and necessary need to attack, and yes, also to offer something to the LIVs. Politics is a blood sport, like it or not.
For LIVs, more of the same is boring, but $500 a month of “free money” from Le Airdoo catches their attention. That’s party money each weekend, a bag of dope, etc. Its crass pandering politics. And no, I do not suggest that, no way, but, the LIVs do need to be reeled in with something, and to his credit, JT is appealing to his demographic.
Tax increases happen to “other people”. They have been entranced, literally by JT. I hear it from my oldest (uggh).
No the election is not lost, and yeah, I have doubts about the polls too, with the Liberal lean of the main pollsters, and the lack of total randomness that used to exist in polling, has an effect as well.
Still, I’m sorry, but the CPC has run a lacklustre campaign. And yes, the CPC has a solid 30% base of support to build on, now and later. I hope for the best, but I fear for the worst, by a corrupt party led by a duplicitous dummy (JT for the confused).
Same feeling as BC 2013. The victory here was a shock, a VERY pleasant shock, of which I do hope to see an historical repeat.

  12. The Ceeb and LCTV boards are a joke.
LCTV is better, as its faceplant login board, less trolls and no minds there.
The Ceeb comment boards are a waste of time. Between the total Derangement of most posters, and, the rigid censorship of most, if not all non-Liberal/Dip comments, I don’t waste much time there anymore.
Another reason the Ceeb should have been deep sixed long ago.
I want to believe PMSH is higher in the polls too. We shall see if the LIVs show up, or stay home.
In my neck of the woods, there’s just too many collectivists, greentards and Fibbers to elect a CPC. This despite the military bases (Naden/Esquimalt/Colwood) and being formerly held by Keith Martin the Reform/CPC/Liberal member of parliament. Its a bizarre riding, yet, south Vancouver Island is a bastion of collectivists, takers and gubmint employees, who always bite the hand that feeds them.

  13. I agree, this election is not lost by any means. As for the media, they are not even pretending to be objective anymore. Makes me sick. Even many of the writers in the National Post are trying to take down Harper. Disgusting.
Been helping my local Conservative candidate as much as possible. Everyone out there should do the same.

  14. DanBC – I’m in the Comox Valley and feeling pretty much outnumbered as well. Duncan is a long serving heavyweight but still…
Funny think at work they tell me I’m the smartest guy in the room, then they asked me who I was voting for. Heh if you could have seen the looks on their faces. So much wanted to explain cognitive dissonance and how it relates to doing a job that requires logic and critical thinking but don’t want to upset the (adult) children too much.
Anyways, chin up bro, we’re not out of this.

  16. Surely the Union messaging is violating election law. Some of these issues should be pursued after the election.

  17. Watched the Democrats debate the other night and was a little taken aback to hear Hillary say exactly the same thing during her opening statement as Justin/Liberals: Tax the 1%, reduce taxes on middle class, etc. It was pretty much word for word. Same guys running the show?

  18. Can’t agree with you more. If the present polls hold true through till Monday we as Canadians will have a lot to be ashamed of. The present generation will have turned their back on the efforts and sacrifices of their parents, grandparents, great grandparents. This country needs to remember that we were once a pinnacle of light in the free world, the Harper government was trying to re-establish that beacon. Multiculturalism and a Just Society introduced by Trudeau, the former, have been unmitigated disasters and have diluted and polluted all that Canada once stood for. We have allowed the Liberals to behave like petulant teenagers in rejecting everything that their parents held dear. Pro-Choice instead of responsibility, woman’s equality that denigrates women, Canadian values that are subservient to new immigrants, an overbearing hatred for our Armed Forces, the list goes on and on. Ingratitude does not even cover the baseness that we have allowed ourselves to be covered in. If there is a coalition government installed because we don’t elect a conservative majority we have no-one to blame but ourselves. We have been the silent majority for too long and there may be no turning back if the LIBS/DIPS get their hands on the reigns of power for the next four years.

  19. “Same guys running the show?”
Ah. Yup. The yanks have been interfering in Canadian politics for years. Make your closest neighbour the same as you, then no problem. It’s a simple invasion plan.

  20. If, by hammering on choice polls, they can get conservatives to suppress their own vote because of negativity caused by these polls — the ones that don’t actually count — they’ve won a big part of the battle.
I wonder if this strategy doesn’t backfire by promoting apathy in voters (potential Liberal voters) who see the polls and then conclude there’s no need for them to show up on election day.

  21. Someone once posted on here that conservatives are only elected as an interim measure to clean up the mess created and left behind by left-leaning governments. Conservatives are voted in and during their term attempt to get the books in order, decrease big government, get rid of expensive programs that don’t benefit anyone, lower taxes and generally do common sense things. However, by doing this, they piss off a number of the liv who depend on big government to look after them. This combined with an unwillingness to hand out “free stuff” results in the election of a left-leaning party down the road. And the cycle continues.
Sometimes I wonder if conservatives wouldn’t be better off just carrying on like lefties. Spend and tax and spend and tax and consequences be damned. But then I give my head a shake and come to the realization that it might help with re-election but sacrificing your principles just for that purpose makes you just as bad as the Liberals and the NDP. Without the periodic colon cleanse provided by conservatives, this country would soon go the way of Greece.

  23. Exactly.
Based on the tendency to under poll conservative and privacy minded citizens, a 4 point lead to the Liberals is essentially a tie with the conservatives.
    Evidence last two federal elections.
A draw favours the conservatives as their supporters are better distributed across Canada.
The wall of lies, exaggerations and excrement thrown up by our Media League of Canada, does seem self destructive.
Why are they so heavily invested in pushing the Liberals? Do they really believe their readers/viewers are this stupid?
The arrogance now being shown by the Liberals will not aid them in a close race, being more likely to ensure conservative go out and vote.
As I have noted before, everyone who votes conservative adds to the likely spectacle of the media having election night head trauma.
I want to see their heads explode.
We have all experienced this media move before, they rant, pant and pee themselves with excitement over their own polls.
The voters do what we always do go forth a vote as suits our mood.
Now the blatant mood engineering that the media attempts each election seems to energize conservative leaning people and suppress the lazy voter.
Almost as if they are not sane, as insanity being defined as doing the same thing repeatedly while expecting different results.
Far too many doom and gloom sayers here.
On present evidence, as presented by non trustworthy sources, the race is a tie.
Past experience points to this tie favouring sanity.
The media message only works if you buy it, why would any fiscally conservative Liberal buy the message from a party that left them 10 years ago?

  24. “Surely the Union messaging is violating election law. Some of these issues should be pursued after the election.”
The unions and their NDP serfs are masters at skating close to the line without being called offside. So no mention of any other party, just ‘subtle’ messaging. Apparently adverts against a party are kosher, it’s when you slip over into recognizable (reference: subtle) advocacy for a particular party that the alarm bells may go off.

  25. VOTER IGNORANCE SUPPORTING DEMOCRAT IGNORANCE

  26. ” Multiculturalism and a Just Society introduced by Trudeau, the former, have been unmitigated disasters” Add to that the Charter. I am beginning to think that the Charter is also destructive. It breed tyranny of the minority. There is no scope for balance, no opportunity to find the middle ground. Moreover, it tends to be the disgruntled misfits who go after “Charter rights” again and again — now it’s the terrorists who object to having their citizenship taken away. Yet, the Charter ties the hands of the courts. Recent cases are seriously undermining our stable society. The only light on the horizon is the “Notwithstanding” clause. Governments need to start using it.

  29. This is odd.
It is from a piece behind the G&M paywall.
    Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau;
“I organize everything,” she said, matter-of-factly. “The kids’ lunch to the finances to the spending to the house, groceries, everything. He carries the travelling documents. For some reason. And you know, I choose my battles, so he can have that.”
Whoa, how many husbands keep the passports away from the wife ?
    That raises a few questions.

  30. Sounds like Paul Martin ‘s wife — she would buy his underwear and make sure his socks matched.

  31. Actually Linda, it is much more than that.
It is one of the signs of a controlling/insecure husband.
Why would JT want to keep the passports in his control?
Why would Sophie bring that up in a interview?
There is likely some serious trouble in the Trudeau household. Sophie was hinting at that.
    Remember the diabolical break-in that wasn’t really a break-in?
When that came out, I thought it was ‘unusual’.
Five people in the house. The house was in a very secure area.
No one woke up as a ‘drunk teenager’ went through the kitchen and arranged a ‘Blair Witch’ display of knives.
Drunks are not usually quiet. They do not stumble into unknown houses and decide to create ‘art’ or leave a message.
It was shifted aside as a ‘prank’ by a never identified teenager. I call BS on that.
Justin rushed home to reassure his family that everything was OK and he would spend more time with them.
Maybe he did, for a while.
He now travels with their passports in his possession.
It,IMHO, adds up to one conclusion.
Justin is grabbing for the brass ring.
It is more important to him than his family.
He is one messed up man, and he may be our next PM.
    That is very scary.
