Got Coverage?

NDP leader Thomas Mulcair has promised that if he is elected he will give a particular television and radio network, one that gets mandatory carriage in even the most basic cable packages and uses its editorial judgement on a daily basis in deciding what to cover during the election campaign, $115 million dollars.
He forgot to check his figures: his inducement falls $25 million short of a rival’s previous bid.
Flashback: As for the party leader who refused to promise to grease the giant palm,

The head of the CBC is hitting back at Conservative leader Stephen Harper…

  1. “one that gets mandatory carriage in even the most basic cable packages ”
Unfortuntely the new pick and pay system where we are allowed to pick and pay only for what we watch, still has this belching Marxist monster as a mandatory channel.
I have written my old cable provider and the CRTC and told them even the new “skinny” basic $25 cable service has too much junk TV I don’t watch and until I can fully pick the channels I pay for, and more US Sat and cable channels are offered, I will stick with the internet TV and my rat sat thank-you-very-much!
The gigantic parasite that CBC has turned into depends on mandatory cable coverage – they were dying at the end of the air broadcast era because Canadians tuned them out, then they piled on the CRTC’s Can-con welfare feast with the mandatory inclusion and tiering
I they had to stand as a competitive operation they would be massively insolvent – so would CTV and Glow-ball – push for choice and free markets and these mismanaged dreary bastions of soviet broadcasting will evaporate.

  2. I can understand the CBC shilling for the Tom and Justy Cartoon Show since 100 million extra could probably come in handy but CTV and Global and their anti-conservative hatred are a complete mystery to me.

  3. It has been lean times for CBC News with only Mike Duffy to feed on. In the good old days there was more than enough for a feast; with such surfeit it was no problem to trade a wink at some malfeasance for acceptance in the hallowed inner circle.

  4. Say, isn’t rewarding the CBC for its dishonesty an incentive for more of the same? Do you think both sides understand this?
Shouldn’t a candidate for the PM-ship that promises to take more of our money and give it to the state-run media be disqualified for that office? Just asking.

  5. 115 million quatloos for the CBC … No no … I’ll give them 125 million quatloos if they promote me …. Where’s Where’s Uhura I want some pancakes! Kill the conservative, he offers us nothing … where are my pancakes?

  6. So, according to Lacroix, the CBC is performing marvellously and viewership is just great. OK. Then why is a $1 billion plus annual subsidy not enough? This defies common sense. If I was in Lacroix’ position, I would keep my head down and stfu lest the majority of the liv find out about the obscenely large subsidy and realize that billions of tax dollars are being wasted on providing life support for a dinosaur.
And as for the mindless drones with their fancy “We Vote CBC” placards and those ignorant tools posting hatred on the CBC website …. how many of these CBC fans would be willing to contribute anything from their own pockets to keep their beloved broadcaster afloat? I am betting close to zero would even part with one dime of their own.
    Defund this atrocity now!

  7. that’s because Justine has sort of endorsed it.
I hope there is an anti government subsidy for television in there , soon CBC will be stuffing its lineup with Japanese reality shows, which are the world worst .

  8. I’d like to see the Conservative Party add a plank to their platform: true a la carte delivery of cable TV channels. Order the ones that you watch, and pay for the ones that you get. They could be priced in several tiers according to the cost of the content vs how much a given channel earns in ad revenue. And no mandatory channels.
Or else go to full pay-per-view. You want to watch a first-run movie? Pay your five bucks. Or put your goldfish bowl in front of the screen, tune in the Tom Mulcair speech channel, and the NDP sends you a cheque every month.

  9. I’d love to see Harper announce that a newly elected Conservative government would give the CBC 300 million a year, because the 150 million the Liberals are promising is too little. And then when he wins the election, you cut the CBC budget to 300 million a year total.

  10. great strategy . CBC would be cut to reruns of the beachcombers and the junior forest rangers , maybe a little friendly giant .

  11. Aww c’mon you guys! $1,100,000,000 a year is only about $ 3,000,000 a day, give or take. Taken further, only $125,000 an hour. Given the outstanding programming the CBC has on offer, good value, no?
Sooo long overdue to rid us of this parasite.

  12. “The reason for the difficulties aren’t the cuts,” Harper said in an interview broadcast Monday. “There aren’t cuts. The reason is the loss of [CBC’s] audience. It’s a problem for the CBC to fix.” There is a limit to state subsidies, he added. Lacroix wouldn’t answer when asked whether he thought Harper’s comments were fair. “But I’m going to tell you it’s not because of our ratings that we have a problem at CBC-Radio Canada.”
I thought he was going to say he doesn’t make political comments in the middle of an election campaign.
I’ll admit it’s hard to lose what you didn’t have in the first place, a sizeable enough audience that attracts advertisers. Saying you have an advertising revenue problem is disingenuous at best, pathetically stupid at worst. Your audience is too small, Mr Harper is right. No, we don’t have to look at what Europe is doing. If we must, let’s look at the US approach.
Why doesn’t CBC adopt the PBS model and raise their own money, with some taxpayer help of course as all networks receive to some extent, albeit far less than the CBC receives now?
No that would be too hard and wouldn’t really address the “problem” – mostly insipid Doyle bores, with the bonus opera Sunday afternoons. Yeah, that’ll take a bite out of NFL ratings here. Their news coverage is beyond biased though their central Canadian panel are interesting folks and I do like to hear their viewpoints.
Anyway CBC, get more viewers, real simple, or cry for more funding you can’t possibly raise yourselves, being an infant company.

  13. So, if the glorious State Broadcaster has such impressive ratings,as Lacroix claims, show us the damned figures.
Show us the Nielsen/Numeris ratings for each show week by week, and let’s see the facts.
Something is very fishy when the real ratings are kept a closely guarded secret.
The new BBM in Canada is called “Numeris”, but it appears the information they collect is only available to broadcasting organizations who pay for it,perhaps because they don’t want us to see how dismal the ratings overall for Canadian made TV programs really are.
You can find info on a few individual TV programs such as CTV’s “The Great Race” which had an allegedly impressive outing with over two million viewers last week, but there’s no info as to what other programs were on at the same time or what their ratings were.
All very secretive, why don’t we see the “transparency” the progressives are always demanding from agencies they don’t like, in reporting the truth about the state of our broadcasting industry?

  14. Here’s one of today’s stories:
    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/john-cummins-conservative-missing-murdered-women-1.3258611
So according to the Ceeb and its sheeple adherents, It’s PMSH and the Conservatives’ fault that women who wander the roads are murdered, and only a “dinosaur” would suggest such women are putting themselves at risk. Saying so is exactly the same as saying a woman who wears a miniskirt is asking to be raped.
It’s the pillorying of the poor “S1ut Walk” police chief all over again. Stupid bloody mindless bastards.

  15. Here’s an idea: Defund the CBC by a billion dollars – give that money equally divided by the population of Canada – about $33 bucks each. The amount that is returned by each Canadian will be their working capital for the year! Who’s in?

  16. Random date – March 22, 2015
Top CBC show is in 17th place.
Ahead of it are 12 CTV shows and 4 Global shows.
How is that not bad ratings? CBC wouldn’t lie for money, would they?

  17. Hellavu an idea. However, if the CBC struggles at $1 billion plus per year, how will they get by on $3,300 per year, give or take. My calculations are based on 100 citizens who would turn their share over to the CBC. The 100 estimate is probably on the high side.

  18. Since only 7 % of Canadians watch Cbcpravda, have people sign up . Cost per viewer subsidy is about 500 bucks per

  19. Still, their new show, “Suzuki Explains Climate Change from behind a Niqab while canoeing with Justin” sounds like a ratings bonanza.

  20. The latest CBC/CTV weapon used to shout home their boy is the “refugee” situation. Able bodied young men in their 20’s and 30’s from Syria in the great majority.
Camera cuts away to poor women and children.
Harper playing games they allege, slowing up the humanitarian effort. Canada such a welcoming country ordinarily they claim.
