  1. The Media Party is already asserting that the Conservative surplus benefits Mulcair — because now there is some money for him to spend without breaching his “no-deficit” promise (aka Alinsky lie).

  2. But mein fuhrer what about the free daycare and free college and freeDON’T TELL ME ABOUT THAT CRAP MEIN GOTT TRUDEAU LOOKS LIKE AN EXTRA FROM WALKING DEAD ON THAT ELEVATOR!!!.MULCAIR LOOKS LIKE A DRUNKEN SCWEINHUND IF HE OPENS HIS BIG MOUTH ONE MORE TIME…

Only 130 views, though, at time of writing. Hopefully this will go viral.

  5. I am a conservative but….
Since 2009 The Harper government has added 150 BILLION to the federal debt!! We may now be in “balance” however this budget has avoided any plans to pay down Canada’s $616 billion federal debt!! In fact, this debt, despite the surplus, is still slightly increasing.
It is my firm belief that this “debt” is what is driving down the value of our currency making the wealth and assets that Canadians produce very attractive to buy for foreign buyers.
Not to mention driving the cost of imports through the roof!! Running some of us out of business.

  7. Yes the debt has gone up by 150 billion.
However in the same time frame the US government has put almost 6 trillion into the US economy through quantitative easing in addition to running deficits.
The US is always portrayed as a world leader because in it has an unemployment rate near 5.5%, however generally unmentioned is that the labour force participation rate has dropped by about 3.5% – people who have essentially given up looking for work since 2009. In Canada the work force participation rate is almost the same as 2009.
In my opinion the world economy is still on very shaky ground and we have done as well as anyone. The only country that looks a little better is Germany in that they seem to have their spending under better control, but in Europe magazines like the Economist constantly criticize their policies as they believe there should have been more stimulus spending.

  8. “The Media Party is already asserting that the Conservative surplus benefits Mulcair — because now there is some money for him to spend”
The Media Party always has this idea that last years results, a surplus, can somehow be spent in the current year. It has likely already been spent paying past debt or decreasing current borrowing. To spend it again we would have to borrow it.

  9. I’m no Conservative, capital C, far to the right of them…
If there’s debt, there is no surplus, period. That’s how it works in the real world.
Gawd, soon we’ll be hearing bi-quarterly reports, just to make the numbers better. Leftist types automatically forget what happened yesterday if it interferes with their fantasy.
The only good paraphrase of a quote many years ago from Preston Manning, a few billion stimulus from the federal gov’t, in a 1.7 trillion dollar economy, is like trying to start a 747 with a flashlight battery.

  10. In 2009, during the worst financial crisis since the great depression, Canada experienced a deficit of $55 billion, more than one third of the total debt accumulated by the Harper government from 2009 to present. For each successive year after 2009 the deficit was reduced until it was finally eliminated during the 2014-2015 fiscal year.
If you are Conservative you can criticise Harper for taking too long to eliminate the deficit. But if you’re Liberal you either have to congratulate him or side with Trudeau that running deficits are perfectly fine during weak economic times. Harper has obviously timed the end of the deficit with the current election but don’t forget this plan has been in play for four years.
What I find interesting is how quiet the Notley government has been during the Federal election. Bankruptcy applications up 24% in Calgary during August. The fan is now on.
