A recent study reported that joggers who exercise strenuously have the same life expectancy as people who do barely any exercise at all. But the author has now admitted he hasn’t actually proved this.

I would not backtrack if I were him. blown knees, bad hips, strained heart and other muscles. excessive exercise is not all that good for you. of course being a fat slob lounging on a couch is also not good for you. I think the old phrase, moderation in all things , is most appropriate.
I looked at the abstract and noted that the confidence interval for the “strenuous” joggers was huge…… i.e., NO MEANINGFUL CONCLUSION about “stenuous” joggers could be drawn from the data. Yet we find this statement in the abstract:
“The findings suggest a U-shaped association between all-cause mortality and dose of jogging ……….. Light and moderate joggers have lower mortality than sedentary nonjoggers, whereas strenuous joggers have a mortality rate not statistically different from that of the sedentary group.”
Then we have the lead author saying that if the reader of the paper was just more educated and knowledgeable about statistics and scientific stuff like that no one would have concluded that “strenuous joggers have a mortality rate not statistically different from that of the sedentary group.”
Sigh…….
‘Schnohr remains convinced that although he hasn’t proved it this time, strenuous jogging might be bad for you’
Heh
Joggers running around the neighborhood in funny outfits and still they wont live longer just like the idea that vegans are more healthy and live longer just some folks with crazy ideas in their heads
My partner died in a car accident when she was forty-six. Jogging kept us physically fitter and thus happier than not jogging (we tried both) but it doesn’t seem to have extended her life.
Is anyone surprised? In this new world we’ve entered into, the only thing that matters is how you FEEL about something. “Facts” are an ancient relic of the cruel, past patriarchal society we’ve “thankfully evolved” from.
Oh, and by the way, it must also be stated that all knuckle dragging conservatives are the ones who are anti-science. That’s what we’re constantly told at least.
🙁 x 1,000
Yeah well, despite our contempt for “feeling” I am realizing that my current sedentary lifestyle (retired) is not good. I tire easily without doing much and sustain injuries (strains and aches) that perplex me as to their cause.
I am convinced that this is as a result of my current dismal fitness…..however I realize that most attempts to recover a satisfactory level of fitness will in all probability be lethal. A truly damned if ya do or not….
I figure if folks enjoy the running/jogging thing…..it’s OK in moderation. Vehicular traffic remains a hazard.
For the record, I jog because I like it, and the daily benifits improve my life; and, I’m certain that 99% of regular runners do it for the same reason. that’s it! Period! It has absolutely no cultural significance, and I’m baffled that some of my peers on the right view Runners as some sort of liberal interest group.
Furthermore, I personally have always equated athletics, and those who participate as a more right-leaning because of the competitiveness. jmo

Can sasquatch swim?
Like a rock!!
joking aside, an hour or two of brisk walking for 6 months to a year will prepare your body for the impact of running.
history: i was in a bit of a rut for about 5 years and my weight ballooned up to 300lbs; after about a year’s worth of brisk walking I started getting the urge to pick-up the pace.
It took me about 3 months of running 6 times a week to get from a difficult 1 mile run, to an easy 10k run.
Where there is a will, there is a way.
cheers
Good suggestion…that’s what I keep ya around for….
I don’t jog, but I won my last fight by 200 yards… Actually, I walk a lot – dogs do that to you. The leader of one of our local running groups died of a heart attack at a weekend meeting – and he didn’t make 50.
@Indiana homez:
You missed the point. This is not a pro nor an anti jogging article.
The problem is that a RESEARCHER has drawn (‘suggested’) a conclusion which is NOT supported by the research data. He says in the abstract that strenuous jogging is as bad for your overall health (mortality) as being sedentary. BUT he lacks the data to prove that point. Possibly (probably) he has a preconceived belief that this is true. And indeed, it MAY BE true….. or not. The point is that THIS IS NOT GOOD SCIENCE. And to me it seems we are seeing this kind of conclusion bias in more and more areas of science …. for example, AGW.
The most annoying part for me is that when the science writers for the news picked up the story and restated the conclusion from the abstract is that he then blamed them for not being scientific enough to see through his words …… “not my fault man. You should have read the fine print”
I have always steadfastly maintained that I will become a jogger the day I pass one who is smiling. Not yet.
Homez,
It’s the same for bicycles. Some on the right seem to assume they’re a tool of Stalin himself. It begs the question: “Am I allowed to work in mining, want low taxes and ride a bicycle without being accused of apostasy by some segment of the political spectrum?”
Did they give you an NDP membership at The Running Room when you bought your shoes? I have no inkling to vote for Trudeau, even when riding a single speed vintage Bianchi convert.
Cheers,
when I jog I try hard to stay on trails and when not then I HATE traffic and the people that drive them, so FU and don’t expect a smile.
-in response to Driver-
Daily walkers are more likely to prosper than joggers for obvious non-health reasons..at least in my case.
That is why i cycle!!
