Reader Tips

During the recording of San Quentin (Live from Prison) in 1969, Johnny Cash was backstage taking a short break while Carl Perkins entertained the inmates. He pulled out a piece of paper with the words to a new song, one unfamiliar to his backing musicians, written by Playboy cartoonist Shel Silverstein. When he took to the stage again he put the lyrics on a music stand, spent a minute or so teaching the band the chord sequence, and then launched into a largely extemporaneous performance of what would nonetheless become the definitive version of A Boy Named Sue.

  1. Yes, Granada TV (from northern England) filmed the same performance you hear on the album. It doesn’t look sketchy the way an old video would because it was shot on film (either 16 or 35mm). That’s why the sound is “muffly”, because back then films still used optical audio.

  2. Take note all who name their brood Trayvon, or Sarknesia, or Jaxxon or Ocean or DinDu Nuffin.

  3. Great, many thanks. My favorite Johnny Cash song is still “I’ve Been Everywhere”, though-

  4. Right.
We listened to Johnny Cash sing “A Boy Named Sue” live in Saskatoon in the 1970s.

“Bond yields have plummeted to record lows across the eurozone as deflation becomes lodged in the system and markets bet on a blitz of asset purchases by the European Central Bank this month.
    ………
Nothing like this has been seen in European history since the 14th century, after the depletion of silver mines set off a slow monetary contraction, followed by Edward III’s default on debts to Italian banks and the Black Death soon after, compounding a deflationary collapse.”

The article goes on into familiar territory about the need for more …, which will do nothing but cost the taxpayer again.
Their deaths are a direct result of their lifestyle choices.
I think that if we curtailed financing of reckless breeding habits, the next ones will have a better chance of avoiding the violence. Race and country of origin does not matter as much as having a firm responsible hand guiding the child.
Baby momma and baby daddy are not doing much of that these days.

  7. A member of the Media Party in Ottawa writes a bood to explain the Reform/Conservative party doesn’t trust the Media Party because they “saw the public service as an enemy and the Christian fundamentalists among them saw science as a left-wing enemy wanting to shut down the oil industry with bogus climate change science.”

Wow. I’m glad I have a moral and intellectual superior elite protecting me from my “Christian fundamentalist” views of science!.!.

Hawaii is cold this week. Very cold. 59 at sea level. And before you laugh remember that the temperature in our houses are the same as outside. Luckily , in spite of county efforts to make them illegal, we have a fireplace. A real one. Built during cold period of the last Pacific Multidecadal Cycle. Its back.”

  11. What’s the story on the author?
Sounds as though he’s completely out of touch with what makes a conservative a conservative. In my family, those who vote Conservative do so for various reasons, not based on religious beliefs. Small gov’t, fiscal conservatives. Those who vote federal Liberal tend to do so out of lifelong loyalty to the party. Those who vote NDP are socialists/union members who have been served well by belonging to the club. Ideology is a mindset. I value freedom.
