I’m surprised they didn’t call the SWAT team;
A Waukegan man who police say was illegally selling Old English Bulldog puppies on the Internet was arrested just before Christmas after an undercover officer purchased one of the puppies for $1,500.
John Bass, 28, of the 400 block of Tiffany Drive, Waukegan, was charged under a city ordinance with one count of illegal breeding, one count of illegal selling and eight counts of impoundment, which allowed the city’s Animal Control Department to take ownership of the puppies.
Waukegan Police Sgt. Cory Kelly said animal control had been receiving complaints about a resident selling puppies on Craigslist and Facebook. According to Cory, the city was later contacted by a woman who had been texting the individual and making arrangements to buy a puppy, partially as a ruse to see if it was true.
“I took over her identity and we made arrangements to meet and buy a puppy,” Kelly said.
[…]
According to police, Bass said they sold eight Old English Bulldog puppies last year and two more this year for $1,500.
“You do the math,” said Kelly, referring to the amount of money that can be made by selling puppies.
“It’s not illegal to have a dog that has babies, but it is illegal to breed them for sale,” she added. “People need to be careful. It helped that this woman agreed to help us out with this case.”
The puppies were turned over to “a rescue group.” Who will sell them, of course.

“Illegal breeding” eh?
Too bad the British don’t apply that to their “asian” population….
“The puppies were turned over to “a rescue group.” Who will sell them, of course. ”
Yes, but the RG will use the money for a “noble” cause, whatever that may be,whereas the breeder was only using the money to …. um ….. live!
8 whole puppies per year?
does not sound like a puppy mill to me
sounds more like the owner of a purebred dog that has not been fixed
The breeder’s proceeds probably did little more than pay for the costs of the litter and some dog food.
Good thing they weren’t turned over to PETA.
Amen! to that!
“It’s not illegal to have a dog that has babies, but it is illegal to breed them for sale,”
Yes, it’s another one of those vexing it’s ok to be pregnant but not ok to breed conundrums.
At what point do police get embarrassed that they are used for petty criminalization of folks just going about their lives? Anyone who spouts they are just doing what they are told to do…. don’t bother.
It’s the Chicago Way.
An oh so typical example of the insanity of our times. The breeder no doubt was a money hungry capitalist that had bred the b*tch to continue the breed but ended up with more pups than expected. If he’d been a true liberal he would have performed a post natal abortion on the excess brood, and all the liberal do-gooders would have been happy and no-one would have complained. Then again he could have given the pups away, problem with that outcome is that everyone knows that there is a possibility in that scenario that a pup given away for nothing may be abused since it is of “no value”. But for him to ‘sell’ the pups for money thereby possibly ensuring that they would be taken care of, no that’s not in the cards for liberals. So now he’s been fined, possibly has a “criminal” record, has been put on a watch list. Until we wake up they’re beating us incrementally one instance at a time, and some of the courts are in league with them.
Beat it, troll.
“At what point do police get embarrassed that they are used for petty criminalization of folks just going about their lives?” They don’t, no more so than a NKVD policeman arresting a person for going to a harvested corn field at night and picking up a corn cob that fell off a truck.
Strange times we live in. Almost everything is a transgression of some ordnance these days. A couple of decades ago a complaint like this would have been laughed at by the police.
A joke at the expense of a political leader will soon be cause for arrest.
The city council on Boston wants to ban dog rentals becuase its disrespiful for the dogs Just what have these jerks been smoking lately?
‘… Waukegan Police Sgt. Cory Kelly said … ”People need to be careful. It helped that this woman agreed to help us out with this case.” …’
Seems to me the police agreed to help out that woman with her case. With such citizens on patrol, yes people need to be careful.
“At what point do police get embarrassed that they are used for petty criminalization of folks just going about their lives? Anyone who spouts they are just doing what they are told to do…. don’t bother.”
Must be boredom, right? You know, all the murderers are locked up and the borders are secure, eh?
As long as the dogs are in good condition and well cared for, I don’t see a problem breeding puppies, although I probably wouldn’t pick bulldogs.
What are the going rates for stud services? Just wondering.
well mojo I don’t think your mojo meets the requirements for stud service:-)))
These criminals should be put in jail for making honest money, they put black thugs to shame for gawds sake.
That’s ok, I don’t have my papers anyway…
The press wouldn’t be upset if they were physically breeding them
“The press wouldn’t be upset if they were physically breeding them”
Well, of course not…considering that our press corps takes a back seat to no one when it comes to breeding the dog.
Chuckle. 🙂
The Humane Society hasnt been the same since that idiot Wayne Pacelli took over now their into rediculous ideologies rather then animal welfare
This typical tale of regulatory oppression, state theft of property and the Quisling(surveillance state informant) “snitch” network that supports it, is the type of official contempt for private affairs of citizens which will spark off some ugly backlash in nations which have been freer. How much soviet dung do these regulating neo-commissars think the public will eat?
In all this invasion and destruction of a man’s income, financial independence and property – what has come of it?
Is society safer? (no, this man and his puppies were no threat to anyone, however if they can goon you for selling puppies no one is secure from a vengeful leviathan state)
Has justice been served? ( no – well maybe some perverse warped sense of justice only oppressive bureaucratic insiders can realize).
Has the economy been rid of a threat to the free enterprise system? (axiomatic question in an era of Wall Street bailouts)
There was no discernable crime here, no malice, no victims, no complaint for damages – except for a state control system (it ain’t law any more folks) which demands rigid unreasonable conformity to decrees and victimless crimes which extracts vengeful excessive punishments far in excess of and “crime?” committed.
So why does this emboldened state belligerence against private property, private individuals and private business continue?
Because the state goons loners who they feel no one has any empathy with after they are done slandering him and spewing hyperbole of these non crimes. Unlike commies who mob up for any little infraction of commie PC protocol, wider society has been fragmented by years of identity group indoctrinating by 5th column media/academia. We are more prone to fight each other in political “labeled groups” over something like this than organize as outraged united free citizens and go after the belligerent state legislating which perpetrates these regulatory brutalizations against peaceful individuals.
Until more people gain empathy with the loners the state singles out to stomp, the sovietisation of our bureaucracy will continue unabated. Until you value your (and others) freedom above the veiled threats from the leviathan state, you will be a state slave not a free citizen.
What Makes a Good Animal Rescue?
Over Christmas, the Waukegan, Illinois’ cops seized a litter of bulldog puppies, and arrested the owner, previously covered here. The owner, a former Marine, owned one dog and had one litter of puppies. What a big crime wave! A single litter of puppies. The Waukegan Police Animal Control posted that the puppies have been taken away from the “bad owner” and given to a “good rescue” in a feel good sob story for Christmas. But what makes a good rescue?
Let’s look at the rescue that has custody of John Bass’s stolen puppies covered in my previous story, When Christmas Puppies bring Jail Time. They are called Wags 2 Wishes. They have an anonymous website, with no listing as to who registered it. They have an anonymous email address. They do have a phone number which traces back to a Terri/Terry Crotty and Raymond Crotty. These people live at 1006 N. Kelly Avenue, Joliet, Illinois. This tiny little 1275 square foot house on a postage stamp lot is registered as an “Animal Shelter” with the State of Illinois and allowed to have 10 foster permits. That’s a number to remember. Ten is ten now matter how you count it, even if you are using Common Core math. Funny how on one of the top animal sales websites, “Petfinder,” the Crotty’s are currently selling off 10 animals, none of which are the 8 new puppies they scored. Terri Crotty has also posted on her Facebook page that she took custody of three more puppies just yesterday. Which means no matter which way you count it, the Crotty’s are over their legal permit number. Wonder what their neighbors think of their animal flipping occupation? They are also not listed on the Illinois Attorney General’s website for legal charities in Illinois yet they are fundraising to build a new “rescue center” that they can sell more animals out of. It appears that the Crotty’s aren’t terribly on the up and up either according to this listing on the State of Illinois website which states that they are in fact in “Not Good Standing.”
Now Waukegan cops claim they have the right to steal a litter of puppies, arrest and criminally charge the owner, all because he failed to get a $25 permit that violates his constitutional rights. In fact, animal rights extremist, Sgt. Kelly stated of the dog’s owner: “It’s really a money-making process. They were in this to make money. It’s running a business without regulations,” she said. ”They had no idea where the puppies were going. He made it seem like he was on the up and up.” But look at this rescue? They aren’t following “the law” either. They aren’t following regulations either. They are in fact making money because they are not a legal non-profit charity. If Waukegan claims this is one of their “best” rescues that is so on the “up and up”, then how bad are the rest of them? This entire story is nothing more than civil asset forfeiture gone bad. Under civil asset forfeiture laws, the government has the right to steal your stuff (in this case, puppies) and give custody of your property to whomever they choose.
Instead of the Waukegan Prosecutor focusing on John Bass, they should spend their time focusing on this illegal dog flipping business calling itself a “rescue.” Wags 2 Wishes appears to be violating more ordinances, regulations and laws than Mr. Bass ever could.
“This entire story is nothing more than civil asset forfeiture gone bad.”
Well, let’s hope that it does indeed go “bad”…real bad.
Because the Ontario SPCA has been doing the same thing for years – and other than Ian Cumming in Ontario Farmer, there hasn’t been one media type with the honesty/courage to cover these legislated thefts.
America, the land of the not so free and the very, very stupid.
he is talking about perpetually aggrieved muslims and the havoc they are creating in England. I agree with him and I am not a troll. I wait with baited breath for your intelligent response, as well as a suggestion as to what you think should be done with people who think you should be killed because you do or will not follow their evil cult of islam.
i don’t care if they think i should die because i am an infidel, but if they attempt to act on that belief, i expect them to die for that belief, and i expect to be the one alive at the end.
Someone said: The breeder no doubt was a money hungry capitalist that had bred the b*tch to continue the breed but ended up with more pups than expected.
So why does the animal rights always seem to be against people making money. No matter how. Is it because much of the animal rights movement came from a socialist United Kingdom where animal rights started?
The USA was based on freedom and capitalism. It appears to be the best system as yet. Do you work and make capital?
Seems it always in the animal rights movement, they do not want people making money on animal anything.
