  1. I hope it’s the case because the Red Star‘s free transit rag today was crowing about how Justin had been winning so many by-elections — feathers in his cap!!! (When, as I recall, the only ones the Grits took on Justin’s watch were ones that had been Liberal strongholds for e.g. 40 years but the CPC or NDP took them in the Iggy election.)

  2. Note to Stephen Maher, the CPC may have held the seats, but freedom loving hard working self sufficient people are the real winners and rejected the parasites on the left.

  3. On the whole not a bad night for the Tories although you can spin it either way. They won both ridings and Yellowhead by a landslide, but at the same time got around 10% less than they did in 2011 (mind you 2011 was a high water mark as well as governing parties almost always do worse in by-elections than general). The Liberals didn’t win although no one expected they would take Yellowhead, but their share of the popular vote dramatically increased so sort of a win in that sense. It does seem they have done a good job at bringing the Greens and NDP supporters over to them, but less so on picking off Tory support.

  4. Not withstanding the Maher tweet — which is refreshingly surprising BTW — much of the Media Party narratives I’ve been subjected to tonight is the typical glass half full/ glass half empty stuff: a conservative loss of sorts and a real win for JT and the Libs based on percentages and finishing second and not third. In that process, however, they contradict themselves by emphasizing that Flaherty was a larger-than-life character, someone who was very popular in the riding. Okay, then by that definition, it’s to be expected that his replacement wouldn’t do as well, no?
Funny thing though, voter turnout was extremely low at just 28%. So I’m “sure” a Media Party narrative going forward will be to point out and wonder how, with someone like JT adding a rockstar element to the Lib candidate, total voter turnout could be so low? That’s would be a focus that doesn’t work in Justin’s favour so don’t look for it.

  5. Actually, began typing my thoughts on the byelections WITHOUT really reading into Maher’s tweet posted above. Now that I think about it, it’s quite insulting.
So the voters in the riding aren’t the big winners but the CPC is? So if the voters chose the Lib candidate, would Maher have been consistent and considered that too a bad thing?

  6. Holy mother of Jesus have mercy on that idiot Justin Trudeau! Can you believe that guy?? After a defeat by nearly 3000 votes and with the Conservatives bringing in over 49% of the popular vote (with 6 candidates running) he comes out with a statement something like; ”The voters of Whitby-Oshawa have shown they wanted change”
Yeah Justin–they want change–they want you out of the picture!
What next–the Liberals are going to to release ”100 red ballons” on the hill at dusk tomorrow!
    Enjoy the song!

  7. Somebody got sent a message and near as I can figure out, it’s the opposition parties.
When Wildrose went 0-for-4, it created a leadership crisis.
When Libs go 0-for-2, that’s a sign voters want change?
Must have been listening to the Obama advisors, when they told Dear Leader to say he was listening to the two-thirds of Americans who did not vote.

  8. The results tell me that the liberals and the NDP are going to be trading some seats…which means justin is not taking any votes away from Harper.
Which means Harper is still going to be PM.
Liberals don’t consider second place a win.
    They consider majority a win.
A leader gets one maybe two shots at majority.
If the best Justin can do is OLO he won’t be leader for the 2020 election.

  9. a RED TORY, is that some one who is fiscally conservative butt socially lieberal, or should I ask Lance that question?

  10. A red tory is someone the media tells us is conservative while in truth they are just liberals in political blue waiting for liberals to piss enough people off to get turfed from office.
Once a red tory is elected they govern like liberals.
    Example given: Joe Clark.
