Y2Kyoto: Reindeer say…

Warmer is better!

The research team found out that the numbers of Svalbard reindeer have increased by 30% in the last year. This year’s result continues the trend which has been observed accurately over the last 36 years.
The scientists discovered this by counting the number of reindeer in the valley of Adventdalen in central Spitsbergen, part of a long term study of a reindeer population in Svalbard.
This is one of only a very few studies on animal populations and climate change that involves animals being physically counted annually rather than estimated.

How odd, given that they’re mammals and everything.

  1. Warm is better for warm-blooded animals – however cold is disastrous for reptiles – which is why ai suspect the climate fascists avoid the subject

  2. This is horrible news! If reindeer are able to adapt to a warmer climate, the reindeer as we now know it will disappear forever! Extinction of a species from a mankind triggered adaptation/evolution is unacceptable.

  3. It was last year or perhaps the previous year that the Warmistas were lamenting their inability to locate a single herd of 750,000 caribou in the Canadian north. They claimed the herd had been killed by global warming. Then they found the herd again. Same size as before, more or less.
    reindeer = caribou, same animals
I’m surprised this Svalbard caribou herd is so paltry, at 1300 head.
If they ever get worried they can have some of ours, they wouldn’t be missed.

  4. Actually it was closer to 250 000.
The same “expert ” used by the Govt of the Northwest Territories to claim unprecedented losses of caribou in 2009, with draconian restrictions on hunting instantly implemented , “found” the missing 250 000 missing caribou in 2011.
Nov 22nd News Blurb,Toronto Star November 21 2011, “Lost caribou not down to climate change, simply moved to alternate calving ground.” Exactly as native elders said in 2008.
Exposure of this news in northern media?
    Zero.
Change of policy by GNWT? Zero.
Accurate counts of caribou herds since 2008?
None completed , either due to weather, or based on lazy estimating methods.
It is hard counting on the tundra, mosquitos, flies, wolves, grizzly…. why its unsafe, better estimate the numbers from Vancouver.
Nunavut count has not been reported in Northern News Services yet, nearly a year late.
A natural mistake all round I can imagine, if the lichen upon which the caribou depend grows at a glacial rate, taking decades to recover from damage (like grazing), it must be only logical (by govt logic) that the herds will graze the same area year after year.
Just like the forest fires that burnt thro north of Yellowknife some years ago, now the herds do not swing down thro this region….but the lack of food is not the cause.
Sometimes it is easy to tell there are no hunters in our bureaucracy, at least none who are not also kleptocrats.(For whom the rules do not apply)

  5. Oh yeah and guess what, we found out there are way more grizzly bears than we thought too.

  6. I knew the number was large, thank you for the correction.
Still a quarter million is a huge herd, to my mind.
A vegan co-worker my wife works with was going off on ‘caribou drowning because of global warming’ a couple of years back. So I did some internet research on caribou and discovered that they are the best swimmers of all the ungulates,(even better than moose) and that they travel about 5000 km annually. No way could those caribou have drowned.

  7. I think we all know why the government and their hirelings prefer estimates to data. It gives them much more leeway.
