  1. I recently used Google 3D to “take a drive” through my hometown in southern Ontario.
ONE store remained just like it was, a restaurant.
The rest of the town: hardware stores, butcher shop, men’s wear, shoe store, department store, flower shop, movie theater, stationery, and drug store is now boarded up, or tattoo parlors, arcades, second hand stores and pawn shops.
There were two poor families in town. The Catholic church looked after ours, and the Anglican church looked after theirs.
The old department store (the only two storey building in town) now houses the welfare offices. It’s profoundly depressing.

  2. That was really neat. Unfortunately the fate of many small towns (and even cities) is to be memorialized either in faded photographs or models such as at the site referenced. I’m glad I got into photographing sections of Vancouver obsessively once I got my first digital camera as there were just too many instances of driving around Vancouver and suddenly realizing that there was a new hole in the ground and I couldn’t remember what used to be there. Now, from at least 2000-2008 I do have images of what was there at the time.
