In tonight’s entertainment en route to the tips Richard Thompson (guitar and vocal), Eliza Carthy (violin), and The Band’s Garth Hudson (accordion) perform a live version of the traditional English Folk song “The Cuckoo” (or “The Cuckoo Bird”), but one that’s based lyrically and melodically more on Appalachian claw-hammer banjo player Clarence Ashley’s 1929 recording as heard on Harry Smith’s seminal Anthology of American Folk Music than on the older traditional English versions.   13. The lefty political organizations masquerading as charities are worried.
    “Next week’s federal budget will contain changes that could affect the charitable status of certain organizations, as some environmental groups now being audited by the federal government worry they’re being deliberately targeted.
    Finance Minister Jim Flaherty suggested Friday that the budget will zero in on some groups with questionable activities, including those with links to terrorist organizations and organized crime.
    The government has already announced it is reviewing the political activities of many charitable groups – including some environmental organizations critical of the government – and whether they complied with tax rules to maintain their charitable status.”
    In my opinion this action is way overdue, as I do not want my taxes going toward political groups that are trying to do an end run around the tax rules.

    It is telling that the Moscow Times seems to be quite independent from being a mouthpiece for the Kremlin. Read these two paragraphs from the article.

    I most love the apparent fact of “expected major oil spills” from tanker traffic in the comments. Of course, witness them now crashing daily against the coast. It’s right up there with 97% CAGW consensus and attending gay parades is the only proof you’re not homophobic.

  20. The ‘leadnow’ crowd is going after the Conservatives because of their bill that will require ID to vote. They are the people behind the robocall BS, along with the Liberal, NDP, media parties and others. They have a petition up along with a plea for funds.
    If you are a Canadian that does not have ID and you want to vote, the next federal election will be likely held in Oct. 2015. You have 20 months to get ID,you can do it. If you cannot, you should not be voting.
    If you are one of those people that want to empower someone without ID, I suggest that you help them obtain ID rather than whine about republican style tactics, disenfranchisement, or those bully Conservatives.

    Hopefully they will take the money out of the CBC budget. I would be appropriate as the CBC was set up to provide information to all Canadians. If an argument can be made that the Post Office must face the reality of the internet age, then it stands to reason that the CBC must also.
    BTW, Canada Post has made a profit in 18 of the last 20 years. CBC has never made a profit.

    An argument sparked by a spilled honey bucket ended in the beating death of a Mountain Village man earlier this week, according to an affidavit in the case.
    Anthony J. Beans, 23, of Anchorage, has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter, Alaska State Troopers said….
    Witnesses told troopers that at about 3 a.m. Wednesday, Beans was at the home and “highly intoxicated” when he accidentally knocked over Schanrock’s honey bucket, which was in the middle of the room, according to the affidavit. The contents of the bucket spilled all over the floor.
    The men began to wrestle on the floor and a witness said she saw Beans punch Schanrock multiple times in the face with a closed fist, the affidavit said. The fight lasted for about five minutes, and other people at the home were yelling at Beans to stop.
    The western community of Mountain Village sits on the north bank of the Yukon River and is about 20 miles west of St. Marys and 470 miles northwest of Anchorage. About 860 people live there according to Census data.

    (Our regular staff abides by rules in our Journalistic Standards and Practices which state that “CBC journalists do not express their own personal opinion because it affects the perception of impartiality and could affect an open and honest exploration of an issue.”
    It’s understandable that this is confusing to people. But, remember this is ultimately about our programs and their content. They are all expected to demonstrate fairness and balance by offering a variety of views over time.)
