This really sucks, and I hope they catch the guy. But using this as an example to try and further some kind of anti mass transit agenda is just pathetic.
Not that I love mass transit or anything, but there have to be better arguments than this. Come on.
I’ll bite! Sarc!

If this had instead occurred in FL, then the woman would likely have been armed. The effect of CCW in FL has been a marked reduction in rapes. Of course with CA being so “enlightened” it’s far more difficult there to get a CCW permit. Nothing says NO more emphatically than 3 9 mm rounds to the chest (9 mm because this is an easier caliber for small women to control).
Ummmmm…. Kate
The map in the article is strangely wrong.
And… I’m not sure, but, given the robbery component, I’ll bet the poor thing was on her way home. Night shift and all.
Oh, here is the exact address.

This happened when I was a kid in Texas. The perp left a young lady he kidnapped from a bus stop for dead. He was caught, convicted and sent to Huntsville prison where six weeks later he got to do the dance of the many shivs. Now if they catch the perp in this case he’ll be in a separate wing of the prison with all sorts of perks and free medical care in a brand new hospital.

Andrew.. I agree, Kate should make a new “category” for every incident ….try have another coffee and maybe waking up a little before commenting
The perp used a car so doesn’t that mean that drivers are sharing the road with random, criminal strangers?
Yes, the bee in Kate’s bonnet is having a negative impact on her intelligence. This incident just reflects what I’ve said before – in big cities you are often safer in a bus or subway than outside of it. C’mon Kate, wise up.
And what, exactly, is going on? Is there some sort of a plan to bring subways to Saskatoon? Does Saskatoon have a bus system that Ms. McMillan wishes to shut down? What gives?
There are plenty of reasons to avoid big cities (which Saskatoon isn’t), violence being a leading one; but avoiding public transport in big cities is retarded.
C’mon you guys. Are you trying to convince us that Kate is a slave to her agendas?
Tsk tsk.
So they gave the colour of the perp’s car, but not the perp.
Why?
I don’t have any problem with Kate’s agenda itself, or the fact that Kate has an agenda – everyone does. But to further it through fear mongering, not to mention taking advantage of this poor woman’s tragedy – isn’t this everything we despise in the MSM?
I know it’s easy to forget that our favourite bloggers, like ourselves, are not infallible. But they are, and they make mistakes – and this is a mistake.
Because, “you’re a raciss!”
Mass transit users are easy prey for thugs and rapists – and that should be pointed out.
Have you ever been a skinny white boy coming home from your dishwashing job downtown when a group of ‘Bruthas’ get on and start pushing you around and threatening you? No? Then F U.
Public transit seems to have more “incidents” of violence than other places. My sister in Calgary has witnessed and herself been harassed to where she was afraid 3 or 4 times in 6 years living in Calgary and only while using the CTrain. It seems to be a growing phenomenon whether because scum are using it to find victims or what, I’m not sure. Maybe police could spend more time surveiling public transit hubs for criminal activity and less time stealing guns out of law abiding peoples’ homes… Just a thought.
As a frequent user of public transit, I think that Kate’s characterization is actually quite fair. Not every “random hitchhiker” constitutes a threat to one’s safety. I suspect that the number of those who climb into the back of your van with a chain saw (and a flat of Bud Light) would be very low. Still, one can decide which hitchhikers to pick up and which ones to pass by; not an option for passengers on public transit, and, if there is some sort of trouble, one has very few options as a bus or subway passenger. Finally, even more unnerving than some rides on public transit is the waiting at stops at night. Even in idyllic, quiet, drug-addled and murderous Halifax, some of the new transit terminals can be pretty creepy places after hours.
I lived in a bad Winnipeg neighborhood for a while, where gang tags, abandoned stolen cars and gunshots at night were common. Waiting for the bus wasn’t very safe during certain hours. Early morning was the worst, like 6-7 am. There’s not many police patrolling and there are messed up people walking home after their nightly drug binges.
Loki and Glenn have it.
These scumbags no longer fear the repercussions for their act if caught, and there is not enough of the consequences Glenn mentioned.
I used to leave for work in St. Louis at around 05:30am. Lots of interesting folks out that time in the morning. Marriage proposals from perfect strangers, random religious proselytizing, et al. I had a car but was going through a divorce and had just moved states on top of it so had to take the bus in order to pay bills. Over the course of about five years until I could once again afford to drive, it seemed like danger loomed twice. Both times I ran out into the middle of the four-lane city street to attract passing motorists or to keep running up to and hopefully into the St. Louis Cathedral. The mere act of waving down motorists was enough. But there aren’t many cars at 5:30 so suspect they are even fewer at 4:30am. Not a perfect solution clearly.

Lots and lots of inconvenient truths.
